One of my two favorite Christmas songs from them, along with O Come, All Ye Faithful. I just find this stunningly gorgeous, the closest they’ve ever come to madrigal singing, which is all about the voices harmonizing and then weaving in and around each other.

This was one of the first songs I truly realised how gifted Avi is because you could really hear him sing. Plus how much of an amazing arranger he is. They all are amazing but he is special when it comes to emotional songs. AND PLEASE NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR HAVING A FAVORITE!!!

I think that PTX is a freak show (in the best possible way). People are agog at how high Mitch can go, and how low Matt and Avi can go. Everyone is astonished by Kevin. I think Scott and Kirsten are the glue that pulls all of those elements together and keeps the group grounded.

Have you seen/heard them do "My Heart With You" yet? OMG, it's just like this, an angelic study in five part harmony at it's best. It doesn't get any better than this, just stand them somewhere with good acoustics and let them go. I'll bet they'd sound just as good if they weren't in agreement on which song to sing and were singing different songs! They'd manage to make them blend to perfection. Most group singers watch each other for the nuances of timing, when to join in, when to drop out. These guys close their eyes and do it by feel and are exquisitely on-point better than anyone I've ever heard. They take a simple children's lullaby and make it a masterpiece.

I got to see them do My Heart With You Live in December on their Evergreen tour, 10,000 people completely quiet and the five of them standing around one mic. It was my favorite of the show (& that’s saying something cuz everything they did was fantastic!)

As soon as Avi starts singing the Sleep part and all of them start singing, I get chills and my eyes become fountains of tears. It is so beautiful and there is no way to explain how ethereal it sounds. Angels absolute Angels singing....Thank you for reacting to this one. I think it is the most beautiful of their songs...

IIRC they were on tour in Europe when they filmed this and decided to sing in this cathedral so they set up a camera and went for it. I don’t know the entire story but I’m sure others can fill in other details. The acoustics on this are amazing. No fancy production. No looping tracks. Just the five of them in this incredible venue.

As regards "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", I've heard that Avi was the one who brought the piece to the table, and that he and Ben Bram were the primary arrangers of it. And they won their 2nd Grammy for it. Thinking about this song makes me cry. The beauty is palpable and whelms you in the peace and all the love you can't even handle it. I quit asking for reactions to it because I started crying everytime. This is one of of their performances that every time is the first time for me.

You are absolutely my favorite reactor, word salad and all! You’re real, you have the ability to laugh, at yourself, at us, at the people who say you pay too much attention to Avi. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t pay too much attention to Avi. My gosh, when he came in on this video, it had so much power-not loud, just controlled power and presence, that it seemed to anchor this song, give it strength. I’m not intending to diminish everyone else; what they gave this carol was as powerful and beautiful. This is by far my favorite version of Silent Night. And I’ll just add that their Christmas music is the best! I even heard it played in Target! And did you notice how they sing with their hands? I love that.

In Sept 2016 I lost my significant other, so needless to say I did not celebrate Christmas that year. No tree, music, decorations, gifts ...nothing. I moved in with my friend who Oct 2017 dropped dead in our apartment. After I gave her CPR she came back in a coma for 4 days and passed I decided no Christmas that year either. There was no Christmas since, I then lost my mom and it was too much. Then came 2021. After meeting a fantastic group of people through a PTX page I decided to try Christmas. THIS was the first Christmas Carol I sat and listened to in 5 Years and I bawled my eyes out. Thx for a great reaction Nick 😎

(Even though that’s hard to choose lol) Also, people are so freaking weird, it’s totally ok to even say Avi is your favorite if you want to. It’s not a big deal! Hey, Saucey Dad! Just FYI, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy isn't a hymn. It's a small portion of The Nutcracker ballet, the music written by Tchaikovsky. Granted, it's a Christmas-themed story, but since there aren't any words to it, it would be kind of hard to be a hymn.

Kirstin always cuts through in live recordings for me. Someone who went to their concert recently said he heard her more than he ever had. I've read (and often repeat) that she's a trumpet among violins. She has to work to blend with the boys and often she's holdng down the middle of a three part chord that needs to sound like one instrument. You may have noticed in their behind the scenes of evergreen that Kirstie multiple times said "I'm going to be so loud" or "it's too loud so I'll do X." All this rambling is to say, it makes me sad when people sleep on her talent just because she's a team player.

Interesting that you heard Kirstie....people hear differences with these guys when they sing. Some say you hear who you're looking at. Love this version, they did it on the European tour and the natural acoustics in this centuries old church are incredible. Avi's voice is gorgeous and these guys can just do no wrong or none that I've found in 12+ years. I love when they do pure 5 part Harmony and various musical arrangement with no beatboxing, it's magical! This is a gorgeous piece of music! The First Noel is gorgeous as well and you get a lot more of the Avi/Mitch combo, it's probably my favorite of their Cmas music.

I am one of those odd ptx-fans that don't go gaga over this one. I mean, it's marvelously and bone-chillingly spectacular in arrangement and performance and just a masterpiece. But I have a hard time listening to it because it changes the classic melody. Apparently my brain does not want the classic and simple version of this to be changed, haha. Which is weird because I usually don't have a problem with them changing up songs. But hey, that's a me issue. Because if I ignore that I know this song already, it's just stunningly beautiful! The fact that this is a live one-take is just... mindblowing! They can do sooooo many things and genres so perfectly! (Also, I laughed at you praising Avis silence!)

Except that Mitch is singing the traditional melody throughout, until Avi does his "sleep, sleep" thing towards the end.. If you concentrate on Mitch's line, instead of Kirstie's slightly over-emphasized descant (difficult to do, I know), then you will hear exactly the song you know. Like you, I don't put this one in my top tier, perhaps because of the imbalance. It might have worked better if Kirstie had been in the middle, and Mitch closest to the mic. I actually like the last part better, because it's all about the arrangement and not about an over-played Christmas carol any more.

@@moragcarnie843 I'll try that. But I think Scott and Avi is actually what is distracting me from the classic melody in my mind, haha. I don't think it's a balancing or even arrangement issue, because it sounds wonderfully balanced. I even don't really like that last part. Generally, I would feel like you do with songs. That it's fun that they do a new spin on something overplayed. This is the one song where my brain goes "How DARE they change the original!?" haha. Although, I don't actually think that because I think it's a splendid and clever arrangement.

You have to really listen hard to Mitch, like was said above. All they did was to invert the chords. Somehow your ears will always hear the note on the top with more prevalence. I loved your reaction Nick! You are completely genuine and I love getting to experience your first reactions with you. It's like getting to watch it all over again for the first time. This one and "Hallelujah" I watched on repeat a dozen times (or more). Thank you.

I broke him y'all! He isn't used to listening to PTX Christmas music all year long, like most of us pentaholics. And Nick, I got my son of a Mitch mug this week. Everyone in my family laughed. Happy Xmas. Now that you're in the festive mood a few related videos you need to watch: firstly, Peter Hollens and The Piano Guys singing Angels From the Realms Of Glory. Then The Piano Guys playing O Come, O Come Emmanuel, then Peter Hollens version of the same song (inspired by The Piano Guys version).
