Saudi Arabia Hotel explore - UNLOCKED OLD LIFT MOTOR ROOM (Part 2of2)

Here we have 3 lifts -
2x passenger lifts from the late 80s/early 90s and a service lift from the 60s/70s that hasn't been updated at all.
But filming these wasn't quite good enough. It's always worth climbing those extra stairs at the top of any stairwell. I'm not even sure if the motor room door 'had' a lock on it at all! It was open, and it's my pleasure to show you around this delicious motor room!
Once again, another Schindler 'wheel' selector. This one is a little different from the one I filmed before:
watch?v=1AyLU7KHlS8
The one in this hotel is much higher, so that "inside" the selector there are more roller switches that represent each floor, and turn on or off depending which way the selector is turning - facinating stuff!!!
There's loads more also - those 80s lifts are in the motor room also, so I've filmed those also (love this Schindler chime!)
Oh, one more thing, sorry about the cheap sound effects! haha :D
Enjoy, as I filmed it for you guys! That stairwell was creepy by the way - see the dodgy handrail also!!
Matt

That was a bonus to find that lift room unlocked. Nice machines, love those open relays contactor panels.

Daniel Nuker Thanks! One of my favourite videos this one - was SO excited when I found the motor room, then the unlocked door, then the old selector!!

This is a really nice find! The two newer lifts run on Miconic B with the Dynatron 2 drive. It uses an eddy current brake to intelligently level the lift, a solution originally invented by Schlieren and then copied/adapted by Schindler as they bought up Schlieren. The lift in the middle is the master of the group (hence it has the AEX-cards which are for multiplexing) and it also collects all floor calls. The other lift is the slave and it only has a GCE card for it's own car calls. It is odd to see a Dynatron 2 setup going at this rather slow speed. I have only seen them going 1.6 m/s and faster and the slower speeds seem to have not been installed very often. Also the winch of the service lift has been replaced. This is a W140, the cheap model of Schindler winch from the 1980s/90s/early 2000s. It was often used in combination with 1m/s design S or later D-series lifts. So since the relay controller is much older than the W140 it obviously must have replaced an older winch. The big ones are W200 but with no counter bearing, that is also quite strange. I've never seen that before.

Do you know what model the newer lifts are? Are they simply called "Miconic" or they don't have model names at all?
@TheLiftDragon
@TheLiftDragon 2 года назад
@@idl3k_elev I don't know of model names for standard Schindler lifts from back then. Maybe there is one, but I don't know of it. Miconic is the name of the old Schindler controller family, where there are different models of it (Mic B here).

Very interesting - the open contact relays are asking for trouble in the dusty Saudi atmosphere. Wonder if anyone noticed the service lift going up and down with nobody in it - a bit spooky:o)

Nice vids but dangerous place for unauthorized people. Both types of elevator from Schindler. The Old tipe of controller has W140 machine and mechanic flor selector and newer one is Miconic B ( regulated drive ) with W163 machine. Never touch relays if you do not know what you are doing. Cheers

The newer R series sound so quiet omg! The old relay R series sound epic.

that service lift brings back memories, as here in Portugal a lot of residential buildings up to the early 90's have that kind of lift. I use to live in a building with one and ride it every day.

Since a few months i've got a Ultimaker 3D printer. It would be so cool to print a shaft and a lift cart and that switches-wheel, order a bunch of relays, and try to recreate this :)

you have got to be insane to activate those switches like that.

Al Thom I know what they do and how to operate them safety. These are generally run by about 100volts, but I treat them "as if" they had mains voltage running through them to ensure that I treat them respectfully. These are just a latching relay circuit, same as pressing the buttons inside the cab, but unless you KNOW that then everyone else should follow your advise and don't touch them. I've been interested in relays since I was about 10 years old, which was 32 years ago, so I know what I'm doing, else I wouldn't touch them.

me too, it's what the majority of my channel is all about. Watching mechanical systems is much more interesting than watching a circuit board :) Thanks for the comment

Exactly. I mean, flashing leds are only cool to a point. The groans, clicks and occasional awesome sparking from a relay wanting attention is where it's at haha. I snooped around our elevator here. 2 floors so wasn't expecting much AND hydraulic :-(. Haven't gotten into the motor room but there won't be any real coolness in it. Only cool part is the door mech. Have a great day!
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 11 лет назад
interesting :) I guess if the car is within the door zone then the doors would still open but not level to the floor. The schindler design gets wrapped around a drum at the back, so no slipping. Both are very interesting to watch.

I think the Schindler floor selector is better than Otis because Otis selectors can slip if bolt holding plate gets slack resulting in lift not levelling correctly or stopping between floors

Intresting to watch! i have some movies from machine rooms i loocked at in a theatre... two rooms... one with 2 Magnusson elevators from the 80´s, wich one is wery well used. and one from a 2-floor 1908 Graham Brothers elevator, wich is NEVER used... i was close to touch an button in the control pad, but i stopped myself, unsure if it really was an floor button or an control button of some sort... the grahams brothers itself is already uploaded. i will try to see some more elevators around...

Your warning in the beginning is confusing... I doubt that any of the switches/ Relais are live at 400V
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 6 лет назад
the potential of a high voltage shock is a good enough warning for me. Between the phases the motor runs at 415.
@jonny393
@jonny393 6 лет назад
ofc it's dangerous .. But thats considered low voltage :P

Most of the relays probably wont be, but the main motor contacter's will be, and since someone who is inexperienced wouldn't know what does what it would just be safe at an entirety to just say that they could all be live, regardless of the voltage
@TheLiftDragon
@TheLiftDragon 2 года назад
The Schindler relay logic is running on 96V DC but the main contactors obiously switch 400V AC3. And btw the caps at the back of the relays which you can depress to activate the relay do not carry any voltage, so you can touch them. But you obviously have to be very careful so you don't touch anything else that does carry voltage. Any you should know which relays to press (end therefore probably have studied the schematic) of course.

I wouldn't activate those relays too much or someone will get suspicious about the elevators running by themselves when they didn't see anyone go in them. Other than that great vid.

+coondogtheman1234 This was risky as I didn't know quite what would have happened to me if I was caught red handed. I did wait until VERY late at night when less people were around.

mrmattandmrchay Good idea. Was there many people when you filmed? Also you should have stuck your camera into that hole in the wall at the top of the stairs to see what's in there.
