Savage Rifle Build, Caliber Selection we the hardest choice I've had to make so far. I decided to run the .243 Win over the Creedmoor but both are truly great rounds.
Since the family all run .243 and we have a huge amount of supplies I chose to run the .243.

Good thought process. .243 is popular for a handful of reasons. The best I've ever shot the 1K F-Class match was with 87-grain varmint loads. They weren't even charged by mass; I just volume loaded them. With those big bullets, you're gonna be in great shape.

Currently doing a similar build starting with my old 12BVSS in .308. I am probably only shooting at 800 yards or less, but doing a good build anyway because it is something I have always wanted to do. Your vids plus the ones done by Social Regressive are wonderful for me. I have bedded an action, done a half way complete load development for my .219 Donaldson Wasp, but never have done anything to the depth of your projects. This will be my first barrel chambering job. Thanks so much for the effort and the knowledge that you share so freely.

Have a Savage 112J in 243 bought new some decades ago that is factory all the way and It is an excellent shooter with all bullets up to 90 gr with 1 in 12 twist. It has recorded many sub half inch groups for 5 shots at 100 yds. Have other well known brands of rifles and none of them punch paper like the old Savage. Thanks for all the details you include in your videos.

Glad I found your channel. I'm just getting ready and buying parts for the exact same build. Savage 12 in 243. I'm in Canada, so I'm just pricing out barrels, recoil lugs. Thinking if I should send the action in to get trued. I think I'm going with a McGowan barrel. Or a Canadian barrel maker, think it's, JC customs. Supposedly he makes amazing barrels. Some PRS shooters are using his barrels. Gonna watch the whole series and see what tips I can get out of this. Cheers!

My personal favorite, because I hunt and target shoot, is the 6.5 x284 Norma. Not very practical unless you reload, but it's an absolute HAMMER!

Great Caliber....I say Varmint contour for the barrel. I am having another 243 built right now. This will make number 4 rifle I have in 243. I will have a Hart 1-7 twist barrel 26 in barrel. Yesterday I just received 1000 of the new 115 DTAC bullets. I am seriously hoping to take it accurately to 1 mile. My next rifle clambering will be 260AI. Right now I rely on 243 for everything out to 1200 and my 338 Lapua beyond that. Great videos!

Next Zipcode I really am a fan of the .243... always been a great round to shoot. Shilen is coming out with the 1-7 twist but it's not available just yet. I may prompt them to see if they can speed up the process. It would be a bonus for them if they did.

243 with the right twist rate in the barrel would allow it to shoot the heavy for caliber bullets. It would be the easiest to get brass for too.

Sounds like you were set on 243 I am doing a savage build myself taking a 243 barrel off and going 6 Creedmoor for a couple of reasons but mainly just want to see how the 6 Creedmoor shoots. I have a few 243’s big fan of them but trying something new is always fun.

Since this is already a heavy build.. go in with both feet. Go with the bull! The extra weight will make it easier to watch your impacts. On the stock, I've had a b&c medalist for awhile. I actually have a couple of videos on my channel covering the stock, one is just a quick look and the other was my attempt at doing a skim bed (which came out pretty good).

I went with a 28 Nosler. Lol. I wanted to match a 338 LM ballistics, but I only target shoot so I don't need the kinetic energy of a 338.

The only thing I’ll say regarding the caliber choice is I believe he said earlier in the first video he already has a long range .243 rifle setup. I respect his opinion and this isn’t a hateful reply, but I don’t see the point in building two rifles with the same caliber and the same purpose. I built a Hunting setup around a 7mm Rem Mag in Remington 700 action. While I like the 7mm Rem Mag caliber, I’m not going to build another 7mm Rem Mag the same way. I may build another hunting rifle in a different caliber sometime, or build a long range rifle in 7mm Rem Mag, but I don’t see much of a point in building a second rifle that’s basically the same as the first. Just my 2 cents.

I know the project is over- and the series was terrific. From Commentary to Production to Editing. Personally, I love the idea of making a light barrel perform close to the truck axle barrels...so my vote for a varmint profile is late....just wanted to give nods for your work and your thoughts- AllTheBest

Thank you for the response! Big swfa fan, was the HD worth the 5 skins? I think they should have the one screw turrets across the board and charge a little more. Then bingo! The real question is optical clarity! Love Swfa, but is it worth the HD price point? If they built a 10x42 with the hd turrets and side parallax, I would buy 3 right now!!!

I was saying 6.5 for the barrel life. 243 and 6mm have better balistics but are they worth the sacrifice in your barrel life?

I've never had a 243 that I didn't get 2000+ rounds through. Now I know other folks who get 3000+ from different calibers. I'm ok getting 2000+ rounds.

Why a 26 inch long barrel is that the most effective links for a .243??

fsteddie95 I get the most out of my powder burn at 26+ inches using a slow burning powder. That also increases the velocity of my rounds.

eraaks that was up on my list when I was looking in to options. The 260 is a very capable round. But I'm going with the 243 Ackley Improved, barrel is ordered. Couple reasons I went this way, it should get about 300+ fps increase over the standard 243 and the barrel life is increased. Also, not much info on the 243 AI at all on RU-vid. So this should make for a very interesting series

unsub'd when I realized noone can convince me any of the calibers mentioned are better than the 308 for range/versatility and cost. None of them can compare. Silly rebuild.
