I realize that I'm 4 years late to the party but I still gotta comment. I was doing some nail-biting through this whole video. I have a Savage action, Shilen barrel, and Boyd stock currently in the build stage and I admit to you (and to the world) that I am terrified at the action bedding task that is next, right now. I just know that im going to have a hell of a time releasing this once it is cured! But as I think more and more about the all-thread idea that you used, I realize that right there is a hell of a good idea! Just carefully tap your way out with a hammer if it is grabbing! And you are right. That stock (and the barrel) are really great looking.

Wow, was 'recommended pt 17 of your build- GOTTA go back & watch the 1st 16 parts! Love the combo, and, like how your bedded your action as well. Gotta say, was a little nervous of the recoil lug high point & how you would re-install the trigger & mag after bedding- but, it worked out very well. Thanks for taking the time to show your work, explain each step & NOT kills us with the tedious detail! Great vid, can't wait to watch the rest! Finally, THIS is my planned build as well- I think I'm going with a featherweight thumbhole instead though. Also, will check SWFA as well... Dave

I've seen the range report already. just wanted to watch the build. I love the boyds provarmint stocks. they make a great foundation for a solid rifle build. I love your choice in caliber. the .243AI is a heck of a great round. the rifle looks great and it shot pretty well. you love it and we know it.

Sounds sweet man! What stock are you going with on your Tikka and what is it chambered in? I'm running an SWFA on mine and am hoping to build mine up next summer with a new barrel and chassis
@shellmaker10
@shellmaker10 7 лет назад
The Tikka is 6.5 Creedmoor and I have the GRS Berserk stock. I know this stock is not truly a PRS stock but this "first" rifle will need to fill the long range hunting role as well. I don't plan on getting into competition so I went the stock rout as opposed to the chassis. I also like the Raptor stock by German Gun Stock. Which SWFA do you have. I am looking at the 16x42 or the 5-20 SS HD. By the way nice channel I have been subbed for a little while.

Hey Vaughn, I just bought a Savage 12 FV, and found this build VERY helpful and I appreciate all your time and effort in this. One question about the Weaver base, I used your link and it brought me to the one in your video, (it looks amazing on your rifle BTW), and the comments on the Amazon page mention about the screws that come with it did not fit some of their rifles. Did the screws that came with your fit your Savage 12 FV? Thanks again!

@emarquis87

do you touch any of the surface where the recoil lug pushes back into? (horizontally backward) or did you do JUST the bottom surface i was unsure if that area should never be touched? Also nothing near the rear action screw just the tang? and lastly should i leave high spot contact points ? this is the same style stock for my savage 111 long action thank you for any feedback

How much (if any) would those little tiny blend in the bedding job effect anything regarding accuracy or the bond between the stock/action? I recently bedded a stock and I had sort of a similar situation but I figured tinkering with it would cause more harm than good, and probably wouldn’t effect anything... is that the wrong way to look at it? It was my first time so I don’t know too too much about the do’s. And donts...
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 5 лет назад
Deven Zang little voids, blemishes, chips etc won’t hurt anything at all. The main area to be concerned about is around the recoil lug.

Id like to ask the guys at Vaughn Precision a question.. I bought a Savage Axis in 30.06 about a year ago. it was used but only been shot about 5 times.. I did not like the scope mounts that were on it. Most of everything i looked at for replacing them was a 2 piece or 3 piece or above system of mounts. It would be the rail and then the tombstones and then the rings and on and on.. I did find a one piece mount. It was made by the Monstrum Tactical Co. I put it on and it has worked great for me. My question for yall is do you think a 1 piece mount ( and im talking about a decent or better quality ) is better than a 2 piece and more ? it seems like to me that a one piece would be better because theres not as many parts and things that could go wrong and mess up. Please tell me what you think..
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision Год назад
They are both just fine if you use a quality mount. I run a ton of 2 piece mounts and don’t have any issues.

Ever have problems with the blind mag? One thing that made me blink in Social Regressive's rundown on his original was that he'd had some double feeds that required disassembly. You might single load I guess. Also, do you resell/reuse the original barrels from these things? Do you stake your driveway for plowing with them? Asking for a friend.
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 5 лет назад
j carry I haven’t had any issues with feeding in the blind mag at all. Yes, I sell take-off barrels and stocks for your friend.!
@skennedy1217
@skennedy1217 5 лет назад
If you bedded the action first and added the L-clip for the blind magazine later, then wouldn't the rear of the action not contact the part you had glass bedded (i.e., it sits higher by the height of the L-clip)? This is something I was struggling with on my Stevens 200 and a Boyds stock. I ended up converting it to a DBM, so it became a non-issue. But I'm still thinking that pesky little L-clip messes things up. Maybe there's another way to seat the blind magazine?
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 5 лет назад
Scott Kennedy I don’t bed in the area of the L clip. However, I’ve spilled a little in there before I I just make sure to grind it out accordingly. Either way, the clip is recessed below the action and shouldn’t make contact.
@skennedy1217
@skennedy1217 5 лет назад
I was asking because on my Stevens 200 (Savage 10) with a blind mag, the L-clip sat on top of the rear pillar in the plastic stock. It does the same on the Boyds laminate I bought. I've not bedded the action and was wondering if I should bed it with the clip in place, or maybe put in a pillar that's at the same height and cut the L-clip short and channel it out.
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 5 лет назад
Scott Kennedy don’t leave the clip out and don’t bed the clip in place either.

Is there a reason you chose not to pillar bed at this time? I've always pillar and glass bedded at the same time. I use a single piece, 1/2 " diameter aluminum stud.. gives me metal to metal from screw head all the way through to the action.. no oddball wood compression issues. just wondering why you decided to forego that..

The purpose of pillars is to provide metal to metal contact when you torque down your action screws. Metal pillars won't crush under torque and will give you constant torque values.

Thanks for the reply. I would like to put together a cost effective rifle in .300 win mag for long range elk and deer. I'm leaning towards picking up a Savage 116, bedding it into a Boyds stock, swapping out the recoil lug, and using the stock barrel. Does this seem like a reasonable plan, or would adding a heavy sporter or varmint shilen barrel be worth the money and effort? Or is my whole plan fubar?
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 6 лет назад
Matt C if you are really wanting to be very accurate I’d put a 26” barrel on from Shilen or Bartlien. The shilen will be slightly better for less wind deflection if you go with the Ratchet barrel. I’d also go with a heavy varmint barrel, less harmonics in the barrel and more accurate.!
