Savage Custom Rifle Build, this is the introduction. As we move further along building this Savage rifle, we will be posting a Step-by-Step series. We are starting out with the Savage Model 12fv.
We still have some decisions to make, like the stock, caliber, recoil lug and more.

Regarding whether to build a .243 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor, I look more to ammo availability. Of course that is not as much of an issue if you do quite a bit of hand loading. There does not seem to be too much difference in the ballistic performance between the .243 and the 6.5. I personally chose the .243 over the 6.5 due to ammo availability. I don't reload and I have limited resources for ammo. .243 Winchester is more available at the big box store in my town than is 6.5 Creedmoor. That contributed to my decision to go with .243. Although I don't have a 6.5 Creedmoor I do shoot the 6.5 Swedish and love the combination of accuracy, flat trajectory and low recoil. When you get into the sixth decade of life, low recoil with high performance also contributes greatly to the decision process. Twenty years ago I would have made an argument for 308. Not now. It is still a good caliber and not too harsh, but I can put more rounds of .243 down range before I need to stop for the day than I can .308. Good luck on your build. I think the selection of the Savage rifle as a base framework is an excellent choice on which to teach how to build and for a first time builder to learn.

What I did to my savage 22-250was take a aluminum square rod, thread a hole for the sling stud, & make a groove in the stock for the rod. I then glass bedded the rod into the stock & it made a huge difference in the stiffnence of the factory stock. Made a difference in group size from .860 to.425 using Winchester ballistic Silvertips. I am very happy

This series is freakin amazing! Seriously. I just bought a savage 110 ultralight and spent the past few weeks taking it down, polishing the bolt, tuning and cleaning the trigger mech. And setting up my rifle. Every video you did helped immensely! Thank you!

Vaughn Precision - i will! I still got to take a scope off another rifle, mount that, and load some ammo. It is a 280 AI, and ive had a hell of a time getting a die set. I bought a 280 AI traditional die set (all i could get) and figure out how to machine/modify the die or trim case... anyway, ill keep you updated!

I have a 12FV, I load 120gr PPU OTM bullets (cheap) over 39gr of Win 748 or 43gr of 6.5 StaBall and it shoots .5" any time, any where. It still wears the plastic stock but I put a Vortex Diamondback II 4x12x40 on top of it and it's just amazing the way it groups. I think it needs more glass, maybe a Vortex 4x16x44 (30mm tube) and someone with younger eyes and I seriously believe it will shoot even tighter. My stock had the same problem as yours, I placed shims on the tight side to pull it over and warmed the stock with a heat gun and after cooling it was perfect. I love this rifle, I only paid $400 for it, no one liked the heavy barrel so I got a discount, but man, does it shoot. I also have a Axis in 270 and a 110 in 7mm/08 that shoot easy moa but that 12 in 6.5CM is a standout. Keep it, I'll be watching.

I'm in the chambering debate as well right now. I want to re-barrel my Tikka to shoot heavier bullets but people don't like the short barrel life of a 243 compared to the 6.5 creed. I might end up going with a 6mm creedmoor and shooting 110 sierra match kings but the 243 is still right up there contending with it. Just compare ballistics to 1000 yards between the different cartridges and see what makes the most sense!
@vaughnprecision
@vaughnprecision 7 лет назад
I'm going to run a ballistic comparison of .243 vs 6.5 Creedmoor over 1400 yards. Thats about the max range for a .243 at sea level. I may actually make a video on the ballistic comparison using Ballistic AE. It's been my experience the .243 doesn't burn up barrels like most people think. I guess if you ran hard hot strings of shots without a cool-down you may burn them out faster, but that's not how I shoot usually . Between comments and emails, it seems to be a 50/50 split .243/6.5. I'm just such a huge .243 fan I'm leaning that direction. I guess I should let science do the talking.
@nextzipcode
@nextzipcode 7 лет назад
I am a huge 243 win fan. I own a Savage Model 10 with a 1-8 Shilen barrel that I have shot accurately out to 1506 yards hitting MOA size targets with 105 gr Hornady Amax. I do not have a 6.5 Creedmoor yet. That being said....I own and operate Green Mountain Rifle Challenge. The longest range in the Northeast. We can go out to 2200 yards. I host PRS style Matches and I have to say the shooters with the 6.5 Creedmoor have consistently taken 1st place. There is something very about the 6.5 Creedmoor that seems very easy to tune and shoot well. I am having a custom rifle being built that will be done in 2 weeks. It is chambered in the 243 win but I have a 1-7 twist barrel on it to shoot the 115 DTAC. I am curious to see what it will compare with to the 6.5. I believe I could have a advantage. However my next build will be either a 260AI or 6.5 Creedmoor. Keep up the good work!
@vaughnprecision

While the .243 Winchester is a great deer hunting cartridge it is not so good for a target rifle as it is pretty hard on barrels. The 243 will burn out a barrel twice as fast as a 6.5 and three times faster than a .308 Win.

i bought the same gun in >308 as well. got it 100 off sale price plus 100 mail in rebate and mil discount (205 out the door), installed an xlr element chassis, shooting 3/4 to half MOA at 100 with custom loads. I dont have deep pockets, is there anything that I my self can do to the trigger with out taking it to a smith or putting after market trigger?

fsteddie95 Love the ability of my stock Savage .243 to shoot 55-105 grain bullets. It's accurate. REALLY love being able to shoot 85-147 grain bullets from my stock 6.5 CM. It's even more accurate ( for doping wind ) for me at extended ranges. Real good BCs...

Does Savage make an Accustock for their older blind magazine short actions? If so I would personally buy this same rifle in 6.5 Creedmore and look for an Accustock take off on eBay for it.. Perhaps its possible to modify one of the newer Accustocks to fit and one of those could be used.. Great selection on the scope. Those SWFA Super Snipers have fantastically accurate and repeatable tracking, etched reticles, and decent glass.

Hop on the 6.5 bandwagon. You will get more viewers as this is a very popular cartridge. Maybe also consider using a chassis like a KRG 180-Alpha Chassis. Seems like the RPR has moved a lot of PRS shooters in this direction. But Traditional is ok as well with the B & C or Manners.

Cameron Schmidt thanks for watching. The build cost me about $1200, that was a total cost with scope. The Ruger, last I checked, didn’t have much twist for the better bullets. Also, any time you have a mass produced rifle barrel they rarely are as accurate

So many choices. I shoot a 260 myself and I have a 243 for my daughter at those distances. For some reason the 6mm Creedmoor intrigues me. The 6.5 PRC is another one I'm keeping an eye on. 6.5 creedmoor is a safe bet and will have a little longer barrel life than any of the 6's, except for maybe a 6br... another viable choice :) Good luck with this one!
