Mastering your posture and the shape of your back is essential for your health and to avoid back pain:
- when your back is round (kyphosis), you increase the risk of a disc hernia
- when your back is hollow (lordosis), you increase muscle strain and the risk of osteoarthritis
- a twisted back (scoliosis) is similar to a hollow back, except that the strain is asymmetric.
Posture correctors pretend to help you fix the shape of your back... but you can do it by yourself for cheaper, much better and much more precisely! You just need to know how to use your muscles well (core muscles in part. lower abs and gluteals mostly).
In this video, I demonstrate how to find a neutral sitting posture and a neutral standing posture. I will show you the role of pelvic tilt (pelvis retroversion) and how to palpate your spine to determine when your back is flat.
