I had just watched a live show with Kim and Savoy Brown. during the breaks i came up to the stage in this Chicago suburb club and asked Kim about his amps and guitars and stuff and mentioned i'm in a small local band. Kim was very humble and supportive and we talked about music. At closing time, i got a T-shirt and got Kim to sign the back. I said too bad its closing time i really liked the music. So to my surprise Kim says "it ain't closin time for me how about we go have a pint"?? I was amazed. So we head back to the bar and had a few beers and talked blues and guitars and music for some time. I am truly blessed to have had that experience with a LEGEND like Kim. I hope you read this Kim... it was a evening i will always remember! THANKS KIM!!
I, too met him; in a bar in Jacksonville, NC. When I walked into the back room, he was alone, warming up with his Flying V and a Fender "Champ Amp"! I couldn't believe it; I had that same amp! I still have the picture we took together. Your post is typical of Kim...a very likable, approachable, non-status guy. Glad you had that experience, and hope you still have the T-shirt! (:
I've followed them since the late 60's, 70's, 80's...days of Chris Youldon. Have met Kim Simmonds 3 times and have one of his picks. This band rocks like earlier times and is really tight! One of the best guitarists ever.
I saw Kim Simmons and Savoy Brown in Daytona, Fl in the early 70's. He was incredible, one of the best guitarist I saw live, and I've been fortunate to have seen most of them.
At 75, Kim and any version of Savoy Brown go straight to the roots of my heart and memory. Loved his shows and always hoped to see him again and thought it might happen in the Spring of 2023. Then came December of 2022. Still hard to accept his loss. RIP, sir. This is a great video. Thank you.
I'm lucky I have the live CD of this gig and this band. Found it by accident at a local used record shop here in Nashville. The disc was even signed by Kim! I listen to it just about every day. Unbelieveable jams. Got all the classic tunes too. Kim is the MAN. This was one of Kim's best groups. So tight. These guys just jell on every tune.
@@universe1831 The name of the live CD is "You Should Have Been There", on Panache Records/CD #1251. The version you are hearing on this clip is slightly different than the version on the CD. This CD is from the same tour, I'm sure. Same guys in the band. I've seen this CD for sale on Ebay, so good luck in your search. The whole CD is recorded so good and it's well-balanced in that your hear ALL the guys in the band, especially Kim.
I had the great pleasure of see them in the early 70s and in the 2000s with this particular line up at Skippers Smokehouse in Tampa. Kim is indeed a very talented musician and gentleman.
So as was the rest of the British Invasion bringing their brand of the blues and rock to NA . And to acknowledge jimi Hendrix, even had their “white version” in Robin trower ;who’s still touring in his mid-seventies!! Ya been a savoy browner since ,again the mid-seventies!!! Be safe .. god bless ... stay tuned .... peace out
Savoy Brown is the best band ever that only a few of us true music lovers knew about I think I have every lp they put out. I saw Foghat at a local bar and I was inches from Kim trying to hold people back. It was awesome.
Albums like Looking In and jams like this are the perfect rationale for a way back machine. SMOKIN blues-rock! I was 14 when I bought it and have owned it in every format: 1) cassette; 2) LP; 3) CD. STILL own the original cassette from 1970.
Warren demartinie dude YOU smoke brother nobody wants to rat n roll me i do still spinnin round n. Round AND still a wanted man that's way 😎 cool jr. I love savoy i. I noticed a big difference in this song played with Kim’s Flying V versus the les Paul ...Flying V for me... thanks Kim bless you ....49 yrs later and still rockin
Had a chat with him when he played a Bluesfest where I lived, I intro'd my son, He loves that new one he got, that was about 10 years ago, He still has that one, I asked him " So, no more flying V and Heinekin bottle? He laughed, I don't think so. Well, I'll have to tell mama about that
Way past his dues paying time Kim has outlasted some of the best in the rock world . Haven't lost a thing & continues to amaze us with those endless phrases he's so well known for. Saw him a few times with this line up & sadly never got to see him with the early days of Savoy Brown. A funny & one incredible talented musician . I'm sure his original Flying V is at home safe & sound & it matters not what guitar he plays on it always comes out pure Kim Simmons & that great Savoy Brown feel. Rock on Kim you made our musical generation all the better ..
Not very many True Living Masters of RnR Blues Guitarists. IMHO Kim is a Living Legend & one of the finest ever to play. Has a subtle jazzy side he shows occasionally.
I saw Savoy Brown play at a concert at the San Bernardino Civic Auditorium they played with a cover band named" Blood Rock " look them up they were both just damn bad ! Was 1969 ,summer will never forget.
As i write this it was hearing of his death... Saw him many times over the years, and lived in my hometown, and had a chance to chat with him a few years back. Very humble man. Great legend, RIP and fly high Kim
I seen him at a small bar outside of Albany, NY..awesome show to put it lightly...nice guy, autographed my cd without second thoughts....makes that guitar talk the talk
AGREE 100%, SINCE I GOT THEIR MY FIRST VINYL ALBUM, NOT SURE, WHICH ONE WAS IT: "THE SAVOY BROWN BOOGIE", "LOOKING IN", IT COULD BE??? BUT! WHAT A PLAYER HE WAS. WHO DOES NOT HERD THIS BAND, I FEEL SORY! IT IS A MUST FOR EVERY BLUES FAN AND NOT ONLY! SO, DON`T WAIST YOUR TIME, NON-SAVOY BROWN MUSIC LOVERS! EARLY STUFF I MUST SAY! READ THE COMMENTS. CLASSIC, BIG TIME! STILL LISTENING TO THEIR TUNES, STILL FASCINATING WITH BAND`S MUSIC. JOIN US ALL! MASTERS! REGARDS, THOMAS(POLAND-CHICAGO)
Came across Lookin In on a market stall in Strutton Ground, near where I worked in 1975.. Poor Girl is unforgetable, at least for those of us lucky enough to have heard it.
oh gosh, I shouldn't tell, I'm only a voice, some skins and the ghost within, I believe that IS James on that axe. He'll never confess. Big respect. James, they don't know you are...
i had this record back in the day (looking In), i completely wore it out. just downloaded it from itunes and i'm REALLY enjoying listening to it again. God bless you, Kim Simmons. RIP Lonesome Dave.
All most 4 years ago Savoy Brown sounds great. One of the top bands, even tho Kim Simmonds is the only member left in a long history of Savoy Brown,Kim has put a great band together.A Friend that He said He saw them about 2 weeks ago,Said they sound super...Kim looks like He has taking good care of Himself,He looks great for His age....Keep on rockin Kim.....
This is so good, what an awesome performance👄💓💋I've loved them since the begining,I was15 still have my LP's& Raw Sienna is one of my faves, just wish I could've seen them back then, maybe I might still have a chance, I live in LA,Calif.😜🎶🎸🎤🔊
Well, you still look great -- maybe not 15 but a 25 year old. :) I only stumbled on them recently and found a whole treasure chest of songs.. I''m a 47 year old guy, a little young so I missed them in the 80's growing up and would probably never had heard of them if it were not for RU-vid opening up the doors to allow me to expand my musical knowledge. This song has a golden second half.......just brilliant.
Lanier 1000- I just saw your comment/reply. Glad you discovered Savoy Brown & are enjoying their music. Hope you've checked out their earlier music with Chris Youlden on vocals, I like their LP Raw Sienna, & A Step Further- great stuff. BTW, thanks for compliment on my age!!🎶😍🎶💞🎶
Kim Simmonds is dead? Gah dammit! Nobody ever tells us hermits anything! CRAP! Now I’ll miss him even more. He’s gone to heaven so I’ve got to be good. So I can hear new music from him when I leave this world.
I agree, sheer guitar mastery at the hands of the mind that is Kim Simmons. Savoy Brown is one of the best bands of the early 70's Kim always plays leaning in that same modal scale which I think is a form of some minor scale. Anyone know for sure?
Got to see Savoy Brown and Deep Purple back in Phoenix, Az. 1974...still got the lp's HellBound Train and Street Corner Talkin thanks Davebritbrat for firing a few of my old braincells!!!!
Yes he's a bit.. er.. aloof.. known him for years and he still says "do I know you?" every time we meet ;-).. As far as singing he's been doing it more and more over the years as he hasn't been able to keep a steady lead vocalist.. This is a really good job on this song though.. he really is getting better every year...
Man I think I ain`t come down from something I took in 69` cause savoy was a regular favorite @ the fillmore (west) & all I remember is their name and drivin home down 280 to san jose every sun. nite, morning. $3 all I ever paid to see great concerts with the exception of a few all day & nite outdoor events where it was a whole $5 to see a shit load of great bands.
wow - thanks for posting. Kim is a master and its so great he's still rockin! Loved this song/sound 30 years ago and still do (did I just say 30 years?).
❤ Kim Simmonds... any other Nation on Earth would have made him a National Treasure and giving him a public stipend of 100,000 pounds a year just to walk around and tell people what's going on with that guitar of his
Ronnie White where did u see them? they toured the west on a double bill with Fleetwood Mac in late 71, or two, just before the hell bound train came out. Did both the title cut and "all I can do". blew me away.
estaban muchos que entraron y salieron chris youlden bob hall kim simmonds dave peverett rivers jobe roger earle y muchos mas que tocaron la verdad que son fabulosos gracias davebritbrat por este video y todos los que haz subido saludos desde Mexico city
Fabulous stuff - shame Savoy Brown never really achieved the worldwide success they merited - I was a big fan back in the early 70s. Who're the other musicians playing along with Kim S.?
You can always tell how old a clip is by the length of Kims hair ,very thin on top at the moment ,he hasnt played the V for quite some time now ,oh yeah its minor pentonic with a dash of Dorian mode. First saw them in early 70s at the Lyceum London at an allnighter What Fun!!
