In no way am I a China supporter but I don't think that this is the precedent that we should set. If China has control over the flow of information on tiktok you would never hear about the tiananmen square on there you would never hear about the uyghurs that are in camps but I have. The largest concern that I have seen for it being a company based in China is that the Chinese government can at any point request their data and take the data of all of the United States users. Our issue is not with tiktok specifically it is with the policies in China and that is why it is worded as a foreign adversary owned social media ban. I guess that my main issue with this right now is that it feels like either the beginning or middle of a cold war. to my knowledge there has been no communication between us and China throughout all of this even though our issue is directly with what we think China will do not with what we think tiktok will do. It just feels like an escalation of tension that nobody is allowed to acknowledge on a world stage or else everything would collapse.

One of the reasons 2016 Trump won is because Americans are that easy to influence, that it worked on Facebook, today the foreign intelligence service owns TkTok directly

You're kind of dumb if you think this is going to hurt your enemy at all. Bytedance can still control Tiktok from outside the US. It just doesn't matter very much in that regard. The problem is the precedence it sets for government attack on social media companies it feels do not support it's propaganda efforts.

Do you genuinely need to ask “what good it would do” to ban/regulate social media? All social media should be heavily regulated and restricted or banned. It's plain and simple the negative effect social media is having on both society as a whole and the individual. (whether it's the ruining of everyone's attention spans, the easily false/incomplete information available, the addiction of scrolling the same website multiple times a day every day) The majority of people out there aren't even gonna realize the problem in the first place to do anything about it, others are too addicted to social media to do anything, even if they are aware of their addiction and that it's a problem.

@@Aspirintax the current TikTok app possesses programming code from an unauthorized third party. It does not need this code to function, yet refuses to remove it when asked. Please know this is a rare instance where the government has stepped in to stop something truly inappropriate.

For example threats, doxing, etc are speech that in theory are in range of free speech but in practice works against it. These things are often regulated in working democracies. The regulations are made by laws which are made by the presentatives that are chosen by public democratic elections in most republics. Secrecy of coding, user data harvesting (and ability to refuse from it), monopoly status, etc could be regulated tighter or looser without erasing the app from existence nor damaging freedom of speech. These apps are also used for information warfare operations by hostile nations. Dysfunctional governance in USA is result of that and Russia does 80% of harmful infomation influencing against West today (New hotspots of this influencing are Africa and South America). Influencing operations can take years or decades and consist numerous attacks and main target is to sow discord, divided nation is much weaker than united. Russia been doing this non-stop for 100 years now, cold war never ended for them. China is now chinming in too. These apps can't really fight against it on their own but need help from nations resources, and that's where regulations kick in again.
