Next time, just put a note in there saying, "If you are reading this. It means you opened this bag without my permission and so I curse you - Someone you love the most will die". Johannesburg airport (OR Tambo) is the worst! So manya people lose stuff or have their luggage open when they take their luggage from the carousel. My husband luggage was opened and his perfume were gone. We couldn't bring all the perfumes in cabin luggage 😅

I'm a baggage handler and I promise you the only time I've heard of anyone taking anything is if it falls out and we don't know what bag it has come from. We aren't looking to steal your stuff because we'll lose our jobs, there are cameras in the planes. Stick a lock on it to stop the zip from coming undone by accident and you'll be good

@@christinafan4476 theres suit cases with clips / clamps similar to a brief case. or the budget option would be to ductape over and around the suitcase acting as a deterrent. do quite a few rounds of it too to prevent any excuses like oh it must have ripped or caught on something and pealed off all on its own. make it so someone literally has to use a knife to cut it off to open the bag

Just stick all clothes, deodorant etc in the hold luggage and have everything expensive in your hand luggage, that’s what I do because I cannot have a long holiday with just hand luggage unless you are willing to wear the same clothes for a couple of weeks 😂

The TSA will actively prevent me from boarding my flight if I leave my bag unattended for any period of time. The only time my bags are left unattended by me is when it's being handled by airport staff. So unless you're admitting airport staff steal so regularly that a solution like this is required, I think I'll be fine.

another great idea is to use an old looking duffel bag, unless you have fragile stuff or dress clothes. We throw our shoes, beach gear, towels, kids toys and other stuff we need on our trip that aren't fragile. Another benefit is that the bag is light so you can stuff more things in there than you can with a luggage.

Well it's it's zipper.. the handling throwinf luggages may inadvertently unzip your zippered luggage so things can fall out.. so a lock protects/keeps it together at least.

TSA has to be able to get into the bag. If I put a lock, it's just one of those little generic ones to keep the zippers together. If you use a lock they can't open, they will just break it to check your bag.

My suitcase is old but has a lot of good zippers. I zipped them up and let it go. Everything was in order when I got it back. Basic yet reliable?

When I know about this years ago, i only go for hard bags with latches, no zippers. Slightly more expensive but with a peace of mind. Also use Bright colors not black, or generic colors... there was a baggage thief that took black bags because it's such a common color. If they got caught they could just say sorry it looked like mine.

Something similar happened 3months ago. One passenger has gotten his baggage from the conveyor, then he went to the empty chairs checking his things and about to leave when suddenly a lady approached him along with the luggage exactly the same as his. She mistakenly took his bag instead of hers. I was sitting nearby when I overheard them. I only took a glimpse, and perhaps the only difference was the label wrapped around the handle. Better be sure to put a unique indicator to know it’s your bag.

In South Africa we are able to have our bags prewrapped with plastic type kitchen wrap. This way you bag is not the preference. JOHANNESBURG OR TAMBO. Beware.

In most cases I would guess, lighters and external Li-ion batteries like powerbanks are removed from hold luggage, or whatever is prohibited. If the luggage doesn't get opened and the airport personnel can't reach the owner, the luggage stays at the airport. 😅

If you carry the bag on, it will be with you the whole time. If you check the bag, TSA has to be able to get into it to check it and they will break the lock if they can't open it. So either way, the zipper doesn't matter.

On my work travels, as a person in the food business I often had food samples in my check in - guaranteed by the time I got to my destination some was missing 75% of the time. I fixed that issue by leaving a note with the food sample “Experimental Test Sample, Do Not Consume”

Customs and baggage handlers will always steal stuff from your bags that have zippers, no matter if they have locks or not. Buy hard shell suitcases without zippers, Delsy have amazing ones and they last longer that those zipper bags.

I travel for a living, don’t check bags unless you have to. And if you have to don’t put anything in them you wouldn’t want to lose. Nobody is going to just open your bag from the carousel, but they can roll away with it and nobody would think anything of it.

I was an Airline Customs Agent Rep and any unclaimed bags left by an international inbound passenger needs to be Cleared by Customs before it can be Released to the airline and taken out of Customs. I knew this Technique from 20 plus years ago. The Airline Reps had to open the bags before Customs Agents could Clear them for Release. Maybe NOW they are Xraying them???

I checked a bag with full size brand new aphogee products for my hair. Got to my destination and they were gone. The thief was nice enough to leave a note saying my bag was pulled for a special review by TSA.

That was nice of them. I've had that note on a trip to the mid west. It had an inspectod ID number or something on it, did yours not have that? They definitely also "reviewed" my bag on the trip back also and broke a wood tray I'd borrowed for the trip. They didn't leave a note that time.

@@TheBusyJaneWe were flying home from Scotland to Vegas. We bought some jams and honey from a little church bazaar thing in England, and I wrapped them in socks and T-shirts and put them all the way in the center of the suitcase for extra protection. All but one of the jars was broken and soaked into the clothes. There was a note on top of the jars, all the way inside the socks, from security, saying that they were randomly selected for a bag check. There was a very polite "thank you for your cooperation" at the bottom of the note. Assholes. Those were new socks we bought for the trip. I had to throw out everything that was in the middle of that suitcase.

The problem with this is you can upgrade to a TSA approved locking system bag that usually has a 3 digit code system which means that TSA can use a universal key to unlock it, *ONLY TO BE ROBBED BY ANYBODY & EVERYBODY THAT HAS A UNIVERSAL TSA KEY!!* There’s no safe option ppl.

I have travelled more then 50 times from country to country and city to city, they never opened my luggage or stole anything...but one time in Indonesia, Bali, i brought a perfume from Victoria secret, it was expensive and probably one of my favourite perfumes, it smelled so good, at the Airport the lady took it from my check in back...I know when she saw it she wanted it so bad, she stole my perfume and it still bothers me after years...hope she gets karma

In Mexico they will ask if you want your luggage shrink wrapped before you enter the airport! It’s only like $10 bucks per luggage. It’s super quick and sturdy.

But, when your luggage goes through the X-ray machine and happens to get flagged for a search (ex: they aren’t sure what your curling iron is or basically anything else for that matter), they will remove your shrink wrap and toss it in the trash. You won’t get your luggage back after the search because it goes directly on the belt to be put on the cart with all the other luggage. I’ve seen it happen way too much.

Depends on how much you value the bag also. Zippers can usually be rezipped. If you have a locked clasp that they don't have a key for, and they need to check something in there, the clasp will likely have to be broken if there isn't another way to access the bag.

Not really... Depends on where you travel too... I remember travelling from NY to Las Vegas and they tried to open my luggage but failed cause I had a golden padlock on it...When I travelled back to the caribbean my lil brother had something inside his luggage and they called him out to security and ask him to unlock his suitcase to remove the item...

We have NEVER locked our baggage in the past thirty years, check-in or hand carry .... In fact NO zipper luggage however big would fail with its zip ... In fact the locker bags would fail first

which is why i put a plastic protective cover over the bag (make sure it’s snug and not loose) as an extra step of hindrance. while they can always take it off they’ll always aim for an easier bag than one requiring more effort and your bag isn’t as scuffed as a bonus 🙂

Your luggage was never "secure" anyway. If you have a TSA lock, it can easily be opened (the master keys are widely available). If you don't, it can easily be cut open by the TSA or others.

Bro, those TSA locks aren't all that either, not only are they exceptionally easy to pick, the shackle is very thin and weak, and it is very easy to get your hands on a master key. The point is not security, it's to stop your bag from coming open by the airport workers abusing the hell out of it.

0% of luggage is secure, it all has a TSA key. All you can do is keep an eye on your bags, don't travel with things you can't afford to lose, don't attract attention with luxury bags, and don't let people see valuable items in your bags. Thieves need to be selective about their targets, so they probably aren't going to roll the dice unless they know you have something valuable in your bag, or you appear to be a person who would have valuable items with you.

If the airport staff want to get into your luggage they will regardless of the what protection you have. The only purpose of locking your suitcase is so you know if someone has been in it. Buying a special suitcase with zipper protection is a waste of time and money.

Hard sided locked case with TSA approved lock. If anything is stolen, then it would trace back to your last destination to TSA. You can ask for CCTV by law and even mark the time your baggage was dealt with . With a TSA lock, baggage handlers cannot open the bag as they do not have access to the key set. Keep all valuables including money, jewelry, medicines etc with your carry on.

As a former ramp agent, the cheapest to the most expensive cases are all the same. Theyd open just from moving them. Youd be amazed at how many broken zippers, handles and wheels just fly around the belly

Not many cover the zip, but once opened with a pen they can reseal by moving the zip. So zip locks that lock the zip in place stop them resealing. A bunch of opened bags in the airport would alert other baggage handlers to an issue so these bags are likely not targeted.
