Maschinen Krieger MK44 Axeknight in hand brushed acrylic! Here’s an overview of the steps and products used to produce the rust base for my MK44 Axeknight, a Hasegawa Models kit from my favourite Maschinen Krieger series. This kit is so much fun! For this project, I am planning to use water based acrylics as much as possible and go airbrush free to help out my friends who haven’t taken the plunge into the airbrush investment yet. Plus I will admit, I also like switching up between hand brushed and airbrushed models just for fun.

WOW. I’ve been thinking for the longest time about how to do a burned out T-55 tank as found in the Iraqi desert. This looks like a good approach. Thanks for your relaxed approach to the hobby!

The mix-on-the-model approach to rust is really genius, and *easy* This is generally how I achieve all my rust effects. Great vid

That was an awesome paint-along; thank you. I think I'll be braver stabbing and blending on the model moving forward. I wasn't painting a mecha though, I was working on a dinosaur. Your rust technique creates awesome textured skin on models with minimal texture.

When you undercoat with the spray do you spray before building ? I have a problem with gunpla where the little nubs that go into the sockets tend to snap off when I try to pull them apart the bits apart after a test biuld

Aw thanks so much for this tutorial! I was actually a bit sad this year because I was going to invest in an airbrush but it's just impractical for my tiny apartment. I'll be doubling down on hand brush techniques this year instead! :p

Great effect! I am definitely going to try this next time I’m painting a tank muffler. You appear to have deliberately avoided pigments... do you every use them to impart a slightly dusty patina on the rust, or do you avoid them completely?
@PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
@PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright 3 года назад
Not at all, just kept it nice and simple this time. We could always add some pigments at the end right?

Do you have a video about the step before this where you textured the model?
@Bootsl3
@Bootsl3 3 года назад
This was extremely helpful since the only paints my local hobby store has are Vallejo model color. That rust looks amazing. Did you texture the surface prior to topcoating, or is that a byproduct of the stippling?
@PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright
@PaintonPlasticbyLincolnWright 3 года назад
thanks and yes, I figure these are easy to get. The surface was textured in a previous step. ^^

I'm starting to try my first custom paint with handbrush because of this video. it looks easy enough to do for a total noob. btw, where can i get those brushes or what brush type/number should i look for i want to get similar ones? thanks!

I know this may not apply to the subject of the video but if anyone could offer a bit of help it would be much appreciated. I’m using GaiaNotes EX-Clear and was wondering if I need to thin it out or not? If so, how much? What type of thinner? Psi? Thank you.
@pgabrieli

quick question: that heavy (physical) texture on the model, was it the way it comes from the kit, or did you add it yourself. if so, do you have a video on that? really excellent stuff, BTW! hats off and thanks for posting this

you're mixing colours on the model rather than the palette, so that's really wet blending indeed. you don't need to have a perfect blend to call it that. I think :-)
