Scales suck to learning how to so on guitar? Yeah kinda! The reason is it doesn't show you the right notes to play at the right time in the progression. Instead, let's use chord shapes to solo from. Why? Because those are the money notes. Check out this video to show you how!
Want to dig deeper into soloing with the chord shapes? Check out my top-selling course CAGED Unleashed!

This is exactly what I’ve been doing as well as using a looper or jam tracks. Doing this by yourself and having that freedom of not being judged brought me a long way in a short amount of time. It also helps to learn a few signature licks from some of your favorite guitarists and then tastefully apply them to you jams.

Nice lesson. My instinct, partly from earlier years on bass, was to just follow the notes of the chord. So many people have said about scales that I've invested a lot of time on them lately, but it's difficult to remember all the positions, doesn't fit well all the time, and it's hard to do solos that don't just sound like scale practice. So good to go back to the fact that notes of the chords being played will always work, and for me, chord shapes are easier to remember anyway. I'll keep learning the scales but also think a lot about the chord notes.

I have listened to a load of online guitar tutors who talk about scale shapes and then proceed to play fairly fast over backing track to "demonstrate" what they were saying but this guy does actually "join the dots" and it's amazing how much easier it becomes to think in terms of linking a few chord tones together rather than trying to hit (and hope) all the notes in the scale. I got a lot out of this lesson and just had fun improvising better over a Bm-A-G-F# looking for the chord shapes around the 7th fret. Thank, Brett, just subscribed.

I figurde it out thanks to you... With a C F G backtrack.. I would usually just practice my pentatonic scales (add a blues note here and there) but my soloing sounded boring.. I was using the same 5 connected positions ... Basically I understood it as, for every chord that is played in the song,. you need to adjust the full set of positions for that chord.. So now I play a C pentatonic (take advantage of all 5 positions) connect them to-> , F pentatonic(all 5 positions) and connect them to G pentatonic (all 5 positions) since they are in the same key they overlap giving those extra notes Which you can learn by learing the various modes (myxolidian, aeolian, phrygians, dorian, etc..) When they overlap they give rise to those missing notes you can't get by just playing pentatonic.. I know I am not explaining it right, but i figured it out.. It even gave me ideas to fingerstyle since i can play chords and solo over them in time to connect them to another chord and its scale.. Man you have opened my eyes..

Beautiful guitar, great lesson Brett! I wish I had known this kind of thing when I was starting out. I always had a lot of trouble soloing over anything that wasn't a minor pentatonic type thing. I had a few friends who were really good at playing major (melodic) type stuff and I was jealous of their ability :-) I'm still working on it but this is really helpful and straightforward. Thanks!

A “trick” that helped me when I was starting out me was called playing “Three frets up” and basically playing the familiar minor pentatonic pattern three frets toward the nut. I realized pretty quickly about the relative minor and such, but it really allowed me to “fake it” over minor and major tunes almost instantly. It doubled my skill level with a simple trick! LOL!

This is kinda the idea of how I thought lead guitar is. Then for the last few months everyone has told me just play the scales. I see some usues for scales. But I feel like I was missing something. This is a brilliant lesson, I've been a strictly chords on an acoustic for a while and had given up on scales. I have liked and subscribed just on the strength of this video. Thank you very much for making this video.

Wow, you absolutely nailed this Brett. This is an excellent, easy to understand lesson! I'm first a songwriter and second, someone who plays guitar. I play decently, but I'm always striving to get better on my instrument. This truly helps. I'm not writing songs 24/7, but I do like to jam a little with the boys who are accomplished guitar players. Big thanks Brett!!

Hi Brett, thank you so much for this video! Very good example and explanation. I have watched tons of videos before which didn’t help me any further than practicing scales until I noticed yr post today. Can’t wait to grab my guitar and start practicing a different way. Keep up the good work, regards from the Netherlands!

Great tone, what you played in the beginning sounds killer! It just floats along and seems like it would never have to end. I too struggle with scales and leads etc.sounding like crap. I will 100% give this a try. Thank you!

I totally loved this - and really learned a great deal even though I have been playing for more than half my 52 years. When playing out, I hung close to those penta-boxes and I sort of knew scales properly. But now I remember very early on at 15 or so, getting this Ernie Ball book of all the chord shapes. I just could not figure out what I was supposed to do with them. Well: its this. Kids, you don't have to think "CAGED" to make this work, even though it is a great asset and the way to really get it, you think chords and melody. The first thing I realized is that it brings on a automatic "following" of the penta boxes around the chord instead of the key. WIthout thinking it out, the result is the dorian vs aeolian, etc. kind of sound just by being aware of 1,3,5. It makes which 7, 6, 2, 9 just flow. And, Brett is so tasty even with the most basic of licks. Love the feel, dig the tones.
