This was easily the best interview that you’ve published in recent months. Josh’s take on Thai society and relationships was intelligent and thoughtful. I believe that men think too much with their hearts and emotions, and many of them arrive in Thailand genuinely looking for the love of their life. Despite the warnings, and numerous examples of catastrophic relationships, the same mistakes are made over and over again. Twenty years from now the same stories will be being told. Although Josh can engage in legal manoeuvring to protect his interest in a property in Chiang Mai the reality is that he would not be comfortable growing old in a property that the landowner wants him out of. His life could easily be made hell. And in any case who would want to live in an area where the air pollution is toxic for almost half the year? Josh is intelligent enough to know what he needs to do … and that is not invest in a property that he can never, in reality, own. If that means the end of his marriage, that may well be a price worth paying. Any guy who goes to Thailand needs to place their heart in a safe at home, and engage only with their head.

As a Western man who's lived in Thailand for 25years full time. This guy speaks a lot of sense, but I can't help thinking he is possibly weak where women are concerned and not experienced. He has been married a few times, which tells me he can't be alone and maybe jumps into the first woman that shows him some kind of affection. All thai women are not like he describes, like in any country, u have to kiss a lot of frogs before u find a princess.

Nice one Pete. One question I would have asked at the end would have been "you've clearly had difficulties in your relationships in the past and you're clearly an intelligent guy.. so, what mistakes do you think YOU might have made (if any) along the way? Regardless of the cultural issues you describe and your observations about other people's behaviour.. do you ever reflect on anything you would have done differently that might have created a different outcome?" Not to judge this guy at all.. but I thought it was interesting that there was no self reflection or admission of fault in any way when referring to his past. He seemed to be framing his misfortune through a lens of cultural analysis. He might be right, of course. However, many people who have experienced things like this will tell you their story but they will often say things like "Look, I wasn't perfect.." or "It's not easy to be a perfect Dad.." or "I was really gullible on that one, Pete..".. etc. Interestingly, this guy's angle was very analytical about everyone else but not himself. The 'what would you have done differently' question is always a good one in interviews.. it makes them reflect on themselves and their own behaviour within the drama and the response can be quite revealing.
@Eric-of5ex
@Eric-of5ex 7 дней назад
You make a good point.It seem like the failure of his last relationship and the possible failure of his current relationship, all comes down to how the culture makes the women behave,in his view. I my experience Thai women respond well to you if you set clear rules for what you expect early in the relationship.I also noticed that he said he puts his wife first."she is first in my mind and my heart"..A man who pedestalize his woman don't understand that women, deep down in her female nature, view this as weakness,subconsciously..Your woman should be a good healthy supplement to your life but never the main focus...I said to my Thai gf that I will never buy a house with her in Thailand, I will never marry her unless she can give me children and that I have no money for emergencies...I was also very clear about how much money I would contribute to the relationship every month...If he is married and spends a lot of money building this house, he probably will loose everything if the marriage fails down the line...She kinda has him by the balls if he agrees to building....At this point before opening my wallet I would give her a clear NO to building this house just to se how she reacts..

The only way to succeed marrying a Thai is moving far away from her family, living in your own property (condo or leasehold from a developer in your name) and never ever leave your Thai wive alone or at her family for more than one week. Best chance if the woman has a yiung kid, but no parents. So she will really depend on you. Very important is to get far away from her family and relatives.

I've watched many interviews over the last year, this is near the top. He has knowledge, speaks the language, can get into the minute nuances, us foreigners can't. In doing so, he thoroughly peeled the onion on my last marriage. I tolerated 10 years, divorced while being bombarded daily with promises of change. It took three more years to stop hitting my head on the wall. Afterwards, I did the circuit of women and have found one that's very good. Both her parents are deceased, and two adult sons understand, "No." We help when we think we should, not when they want. Her family doesn't like it; however, friends abroad have educated her on the pitfalls of the "family." Thankfully, she listens and is very reasonable.

One of the best interviews I've seen. Cheers. Some nice insights and awareness. Thai's are very practical (which is both positive and negative). The lack of empathy can seem to be almost sociopathic to westerners. The inability of some women to express deep emotions such as loss is alarming and can be very troubling to westerners. We can be perplexed by it. It is worth noting I know of several Thai's who remain married but never seen each other. There have also been several news stories of Thai men with multiple wives (I guess they can provide?). You either learn the game and play it better or you get buried by it. Personally, I've been married to a well-educated Thai lady but I am soon to divorce. Age difference, I don't want children and boredom were the main reasons for the failure. And yes, lease the land, get it all drawn up by lawyers in Bangkok (ones your wife is not aware of) and see if she goes for it. If she doesn't, then you will know instantly she is trying for the scam. 30 years plus 30 years is normal. They are looking at extending the land leases to 99 years right now.

Josh with truth bombs ! Props brother. Yes, group conformity is apparent. Someone touched on it in one of your earlier videos Pete in the Saving Face. The point of that interview was for Thai Nationals and locals to subjectively have self recognition and admit their mistakes and shortcomings so that they can transcend and/or evolve their own personal self.

Even the debt thing is very typical in Colombia. They borrow to buy new clothes and expensive gifts for Christmas, then get another loan in January to pay back the first loan. And of course if a foreigner lends money, it will never get paid back.

This guy nailed it. I only lived in Thailand for 1.5 years and had the same opinions. 100%. He is also right about only the central Thais have modern thinking. In Colombia, something like 80% of the kids grow up without a dad. So you have millions of young, single mothers. Most have no education and hence no opportunities to make a lot of money with a decent job. At the same time, they are expected to take care of their kids alone, until the son gets married, which could be in his 30s. AND on top of that, they have to take care of their own mom. The result is that women see prostitution OR marrying a guy from a wealthy country as their only option. They will at first seem like The Perfect Wife, in order to rope in the guy, but as soon as they have the opportunity, they will be with guys they are actually attracted to. Of course I am generalizing here, but these are typical traits.

Lets be real for a moment, it has been and will always be, the desperate guys who will be easy pickings for women regardless of the country you are in. The best thing you can do is better yourself physically and mentally, be honest with yourself and acknowledge that if you are seen as physically unattractive in your home country, this won't change by changing your area code. Work with your best traits, level up your lesser traits and accept your options of female equivalents or.....leverage your financial position to date girls above your bating average. Two take aways, practice non-attachment and the law of non-permanence

As an American expat who has come to Thailand and married a Thai lady, I feel very bad for Josh, but I feel like he kind of walked right into this one with his eyes closed. And that may have been partly due to his vulnerability after the things he went through before meeting his "scammer." I would caution him against using language like "They're very skilled at this kind of thing" (scamming men who want love) because without any clarification, he makes it sound like a blanket judgment against all Thai women, which of course would be extremely unfair and inaccurate. To my constant amazement, my wife is totally free of these kinds of motivations. She doesn't have a larcenous, greedy, or dishonest bone in her body. She doesn't even want to know how much money I really have, and she has never asked me about whether I have a will, or life insurance, or anything like that. She just wants to know that I can help her if she genuinely needs something, which I'm happy to do. Don't give up Josh... I think you'll succeed on your next try since you have now truly seen how it can go if you're not super careful in the early stages.

This is the problem with guys like Josh who are full of bias and can never stop making sweeping generalizations. Maybe he learned this at school in the US? From my experience, it's always best to attend the better unis in the US, such as MIT, the IVYs, U Wash, and a few others. At these schools, one is able to actually learn something of importance. Maybe best to steer clear of Stanford, though..

I ve heard of cases where foreigners have been scammed after building houses in Thailand. Some guys went to court, and because they could prove they paid for everything, they got the house, but had to sell it within a year. The process can take years, but the Thai women had to pay rent in arrears for living in the property during the legal process. See a lawyer and keep a paper trail.

This guy makes some good points and has insight that should be well considered. Thai culture has been massively influenced by Chinese migration, so to say it hasn't been diluted is clearly false. Money is like god to most Chinese and that has influenced most Thais. The fact is that most Thais are dirt poor, in debt, and climbing the socioeconomic ladder is extremely difficult; it's no surprise that if you're living in poverty or living from paycheck to paycheck you focus on money and that's not just a Thai thing. As for a Thai woman and her parents, in the vast majority of cases you should expect to be number two till they pass away. With that said, you should get to know the woman and her parents very well before marriage to determine if you can manage/afford their expectations - it's all about expectations so ask direct questions, get answers, and then stand firm if expectations later change that you didn't agree to. I personally would not lease and build property on my wife's land....although, I might consider it only after we had been married for decades and you're still happy together. I would suggest you do as I have done, buy your properties, cars, etc.,... BEFORE you get serious and marry and preferably your property is in a place that's far enough away from the future Thai family so it's not easy for them to just pop over. Statistics don't lie. so always remember to protect yourself and your money so you don't get rekt!

After 15 years of marriage with the most amazing Thai woman, I have to disagree with him. My wife chose me over here family when we had some problems many years ago, so we/I have had a great relationship with my Thai family since then. My wife knew from the beginning that I was not a rich guy, which was why I didn't pay sinsort, but I promised her mom and dad to take care of her with the means I have for the rest of my life, and they accepted that. My wife is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
