There is little doubt that corn is the king of Kokanee baits. Anglers obsess over their Kokanee corn recipes but does all that added scent and curing make a difference? In this video I fish unscented corn straight from the can vs cured and scented corn. The results speak for themselves.

I always smear with the Procure kokanee/krill/trout scents. They really stick well and long lasting work fantastic for kokanee and Salmon. Made some believers out of friends I've outfished using scent. Usually have to toss them a bottle from my boat to theirs.

I do a can of white shoepeg and then dump a can of tuna in oil with it and mix it up. Then I add some pickling salt and I’ve had way better luck lately

Good stuff as usual. I have discussed this at length with many kokaholics and several have told me that on certain days NCS (natural corn scent) will way outperform any of the other 4+ scents they are running but scents are much more consistent. I just never bring corn without my special magic in it so i have never tried.

First, thanks for all the good info you've put out... I've gone from skunks to limits purely by following your guidelines. :-) Quick question... how much corn do you mix up in a batch? just enough for the day or do you make enough for multiple days? if you make enough for multiple days do you freeze it between trips? keep in the fridge? other?

From one can of corn I'll rig 4 batches typically of different scents and colors. If I don't plan on using them within 3 or 4 weeks I freeze them. I've used frozen corn from the previous year and done fine.

Great content as usual. I've always ran the gulp maggots just for the easy, but I'll have try this. Any advice for trolling staind/muddy water? With high amount of run off, almost all the kokanee water around here looks like chocolate milk.

Its tough. Look for contrasting darker colors with some flash e.g. blue, black, or purple combined with silver or gold. Something that puts out a lot of vibration will help excited their lateral lines, so stuff like spinners should do better.

The un-cured corn is so much softer, it could be falling off before your rig gets bit. That may explain why only one hook is getting them with plain corn- short strikes, or the current strip the bait off-by the time they get hooked, half the bait fell off. What was your experience with retrieving your gear and re- baiting? Did the plain corn come back stripped more often?

A few times it was stripped which is why I would check it after short strikes.

Wonderful video once again! I'm assuming you aren't a fan of the pre-cured/scented variety's from Pautzke? Any thoughts on why other than enjoying making your own and testing things? Because I do enjoy making my own and always use green giant shoepeg corn in the white can. Also, I usually tip both of my hooks with the tail of a worm as well and feel like this greatly increases my catch ratio, any thoughts?

I used the Pautzke's stuff. Its okay in a pinch but the stuff I've cured myself always out performs. I've not tried the worm thing but I'd rather not have to deal with live bait plus worms are friggin expensive now!

@@spiltmilt I couldn't agree more. I keep Pautzke's handy just in case. We primarily fish Lake Cushman so if I forget worms or the corn I usually have a harder time as its a tough fishery. Worm dirt gets gear nasty and any injured ones can quickly spoil an entire batch, which can get costly if you fish a lot and understandable why not to use them. I really should get a compost bin together, I think the red wigglers would be great! We fish the Anderson Ranch Reservoir tournament every year and some of your tips have helped! We got 3rd last year, hoping to do better this round!

They might. Soft plastic will absorb scent.

Hey Tyler - thanks for another great video. Off-topic question for you. I know you often fish Alta Lake. Have you fished there this season? I fished there yesterday, and there was a kayaker and a couple other boats fishing for kokanee. I got no kokanee, nor did the kayaker, and I didn't see the nets come out on any of the boats. I also saw no kokanee on the fish finder, despite the water surface temperature of 70 degrees, which would have driven any kokanee deeper.

I fish for rainbows in Colorado exactly the same way (trolling a dodger/hoochie or dodger/KCP combo) and consistently outperform others on the lake, and usually catch the larger trout. Maybe people don’t fish for trout like that very often where I’m at so it’s a new thing for the fish, but realistically trout and Kokanee are both salmonids and feed similarly so I figured “why not?” and it has really been fun!

Do you also add scent to your lure? I've fished unscented corn a lot, but always have one scent or another on my lure and at times on the dodger, leaving a nice smelly trail back behind the boat.

Have you ever used 'Fire Corn'. I bought some, but haven't tried it. Guy I talked to says it doesn't perform near as well as soaked canned corn or gulp maggots...I'm actually headed to Green peter this Sunday for the first time. I just got some of the cure, curious about freezing a can of shoepegg to last a couple trips. Should I freeze the corn in smaller containers without cure or cure first before freezing?

My thought would be to cure it first, then freeze. Mainly because corn has a substantial amount of water in it, when you freeze it, the ice breaks the cell wall structure and then they get soft. Remove the water first (curing) and then freeze, that should help preserve structural integrity.

How long do you keep your scents for? At only an 1/8tsp of each, if you aren’t fishing every day, a bottle could last you a long time, but how long is the scent good for? Do you throw out scents after a certain number of years?

Bait oils I keep for years and use them. The water soluble stuff I generally toss after two seasons but I use it for Kings a lot with my tuna.

Hey. When I try trolling with the clip in weights. Let’s say I let out 60ft of line. Then put on a 3oz weight and let out another 40, approx how deep would I be fishing at, if I’m going 1mph

20' most likely at such a low speed depending on the dodger and line diameter. If you speed up to 1.5 it'll be closer to 10-15'.

Do you have a chart or equation that you use or could share for speed to line out to depth? This has been my biggest struggle as I feel like I'm just guessing at depth. I mark a lot of fish, but I rarely get a hit. I've been going 1.5mph 40' back, 4oz clip-in, and another 40 to 60' out. I'm guessing between 25-30' deep? Thanks for any advice!

@@spiltmilt on the gamakatsu the angle of the hook point and eye of the hook are the same. the result is a smaller than necessary gap between them. this tiny gap gives you a small amount of space to hook the fish. it is well known in the bass world for skin hooking fish since the gap on the hook is so small. compared with a hook like the one i mentioned before, the decoy hook has a larger gap giving you a better hook into your fish. plus its not a bad video idea.

look close at the shot rig worm 10 hook compared to the gamakatsu dropshot. notice how the hook eye and hook point of the decoy is offset way more than the gamakatsu. while the gamakatsu hook has the hook eye and hook point almost in a straight line
