The vertebrae of a healthy spine are shaped like cylinders and are stacked one on top of another. Scheuermann’s kyphosis occurs when the bones in the thoracic region of the spine become shaped like wedges. There is no clear reason for the development of Scheuermann’s kyphosis. But many anatomic and physiological changes may increase the risk of Scheuermann’s kyphosis developing.
Many scientists believe that Scheuermann's kyphosis is a genetic disease, which is inherited by children from their parents. One scientific study revealed mild osteoporosis in some young people who were affected by Scheuermann’s kyphosis.
According to another theory, Scheuermann's kyphosis may occur due to mechanical factors, such as unhealthy sitting positions. There is also a theory that explains the cause of Scheuermann's kyphosis as an alteration in disc height due to collagen changes.

I am now 57 and I have lived with this deformity since I was 11, my parents did nothing to help me so at 30 I had rods and screws inserted in 1993, they became unhooked and really did nothing for my posture. In 2007 I fell on my tailbone, the rods or screws or both rubbed a hole in my back, I had fluid leaking out for 4 years, by the time It got to my appointment day at the doctors, it would miraculously heal over, long story short, I was admitted to hospital with septicemia, doctors at the hospital said if I hadn't got there when I did I wouldn't have been here in the morning, this was around midnight. During surgery my sciatic nerve was cut, now I have a deformed left foot and weak leg. I had to go interstate for my removal of the rods, when sent back to the hospital in my home town my back was filling up with fluid, after a lumber drain for 10 days and another operation which didn't stop the fluid build up, 8 needles were put down each side of my spine, dye injected and a cat scan, they realised I had a dual tear in 3 places, surgery repaired it and I was due to be discharged after 5 weeks in hospital and I got staph, 2 weeks on IV Vancomycin and I was discharged, 7 weeks in hospital, almost died, came out with sciatic nerve damage, I couldn't walk, the pain was horrendous, worse than child birth, and I still have a hunchback, all I ever wanted was a straight back and the 2 people that are meant to care for me, get me medical treatment when needed, neglected me and let me suffer, the teasing throughout high school because of a hump was something I should never have had to endure. Sorry my comment is so long, I could still add more but I think I got out what I have needed to get out for decades now. The fluid leaking out of my back was spinal fluid, brain fluid.

I am 28, In a similar situation you must have been in, not addressed early enough for any back brace to be a viable option. Now i am suffering more and considering pushing for surgery with the Rods. I am scared of how i will be in 20 years if i do nothing now. but reading your post is sobering and i need to think carefully. Surgery is clearly not always an end to this problem. I hope you recover enough for reasonable life. thanks for sharing.

This sounds like torture and i hope you have found some healing. I've had it since i was 11. My mom just told me to stand up straight without realizing its maybe hereditary as my father had it. Would never do surgery for it though, never never. Keeping the back flexible is the key mote than strength reinforcement
