When calling the police on someone who has mental health issues the parents should inform the police department so that their child doesn't not get shot by the officers.

Some officers have been informed and shoot anyway. Tell them to send BLACK OFFICERS ONLY AND A SUPERVISOR.

I am so happy that this video came up. It was clear and I totally agree with what both women said. Each situation is different and complex but there are common factors. I live in the Caribbean and our last son is now in the UK.. We tried to get help for him here but it was clear that the services available were extremely limited. His mental health problems began when he went to the US to study. After graduating he started to smoke weed. We now realize that this combined with other factors exacerbated an underlying mental health problem problem..

We decided to take him back to the UK where I am from and he was born to get the help he so badly needed. This has been a complete disaster. He has now deteriorated to the extent that he is detained under the Mental Health Act. We have tried to work with his various psychiatrist none of whom are black. The present one refuses to hear anything we say and is culturally ignorant and insensitive. He refuses to take our views into consideration and we cannot get a clear diagnosis from him.

This has gone on for over 6 years. During that time I have used RU-vid as an excellent source of information and support. I have just drafted a letter raising some fundamental concerns and asking for a black psychiatrist. Our son been on various medication for this entire period which has made no difference to his hallucinations and depression.

I am desperate and worried that he has become trapped in a cycle which is making him feel hopeless and suicidal. He refuses to accept that he has mental health problems and needs help. We know he needs to talk to a black professional and other black men who can relate to him and understand what he has gone through. We have tried. We cannot get him to open up.

I am also contacting some of the organizations in the UK working with black mental health to seek help. I cannot give up. I will also follow-up with the organization mentioned which I hope may be able to help him.

This is a big problem which is on the increase especially in the black community. Thank you both for sharing your experience and professional knowledge so honestly. I pray everyday for those suffering with their mental health and their families who love them and want to help them.
