Janine is, in my opinion, the greatest violinist of our time. Not because she's perfect or has great technique (which she does) but because she just lives and breathes the music and plays every performance like it's life and death. With reckless abandon. And the true magic that she inspires in these chamber ensembles with her infectious energy is just unreal.

I love Janine Jensen and her marvelous artistry. She plays with heart and passion. It is a pleasure to watch and listen to her interpretations. She is undoubtedly a great violinist. Also a very lovely beautiful woman. Still, saying that Janine is the greatest violinist of our time is a bold statement. Is she greater than Maxim Vengerov, Perlman, Joshua Bell, Augustin Hadelich, Hillary Hahn, Julia Fischer, Ann Sophie Mutter? I am a violinist myself, though not a professional one. I would hesitate to say Janine is the very best, much as I love her playing.

This octet is considered a masterpiece in the scope of chamber music. In fact, only an outstanding musician like Shubert could write it. The harmony and the “conversation “ that is established between the instruments is amazing and divine. The violinist is superb. The orchestration is exceptional. This work deeply impresses us for its sensitivity and melodic wonder. Thanks for this incredible moment by listening to this magnificent music.

This is my favourite piece of music by ANY composer. I have about 10 versions on CD, and before lockdown I would try to attend every live performance of it in my home country. There are hundreds of reasons why it is so special but I’ll just mention one. It’s fairly clear from about 13’55” that the movement is drawing to a close, and Schubert could so easily have ended with just a couple of ff tutti chords. But he didn’t. Instead, the tempo slows and at 14’30” the horn seems to say “you may have thought that this was just a jolly divertimento, but you were so wrong! This will be the most beautiful and exciting and moving journey of your life”.
@gervaisfrykman266
@gervaisfrykman266 3 года назад
The rising arpeggio ending with repeated notes occurs in many guises throughout the octet, and its meaning is revealed in the nightmare in the recap in the finale. It is fear. And then what happens? It is transmuted into pure joy in the coda. I so resonate with your description: "This will be the most beautiful and exciting and moving journey of your life."
@antwerpsmerle1404
@antwerpsmerle1404 3 года назад
@@gervaisfrykman266 yes indeed. The (brief) nightmare near the end is something that the Octet shares with Schubert’s String Quintet. What a complex man he seems to have been. For me, the passage first heard at 18’ 45” here is the sound of Gaia breathing. It reminds me of Berg’s description of the first movement of Mahler 9: “the expression of a tremendous love for this world, a longing to live in peace and to savour Nature to its depths before the arrival of Death”.
@gervaisfrykman266
@gervaisfrykman266 3 года назад
@@antwerpsmerle1404 Thanks for that insight concerning Gaia. You shared experience. He knew all about sadness and fracturing. There is a breakdown in the slow movement here, and another in the slow movement of the great C major symphony. But nobody takes on the sadness with greater courage. I think particularly of the E flat piano trio, finale, when the very sad slow movement theme is recapitulated in e flat minor, then turns to major, and the Agnus Dei of the E flat mass just before the second Dona nobis Pacem, where he breaks out of the solemn round that he has created, with a major chord. There is also the outburst in the slow movement of the A major sonata D959, but the finale is warm, glowing, assured, beautiful.
@antwerpsmerle1404
@antwerpsmerle1404 3 года назад
@@gervaisfrykman266 thanks for that. I don’t know Schubert’s Masses but will seek them out. The breakdown in D959 is - for me - almost too intense to listen to. What anguish must a human being have had to endure to write music like that? Actually, I hope that Lorraine Byrne Bodley’s forthcoming biography will shed new light on Schubert’s personality.
