Schubert's early piano sonatas are very underplayed - in fact they were completely neglected for a century, except his 18th piano sonata, hailed as a "perfect sonata" by Schumann. Common views were that Schubert's sonatas were vastly inferior to Beethoven's. However, Schubert, although influenced by the great composer, had his own distinct style of piano sonata composition. This early sonata is full with Schubert's style which gets developed even more in his future sonata writing. A prime example of this is the second movement of this sonata - The primary theme gets used in the great rondo of Schubert's 20th piano sonata (D. 959). It is fascinating to discover Schubert's evolution as a composer through listening to these delightful early sonatas.
