Scindapsus treubii 'Dark Form' Houseplant Care - 128 of 365

I picked up this plant in Chicago and my friend Mick, who works at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was able to identify it as Scindapsus treubii 'Dark Form', which brings in #128 of "365 Days of Plants". I've seen this plant growing in botanic gardens in Asia and will shingle up on trees, getting longer leaves.
The planter this one is in is a vintage tile planter; and the other is from Anthropologie!
I'll be touching upon where this plant is native to, how it grows, where I'm growing mine in my home, and other basic care tips.

OML YOUR GONNA BE PROUD OF ME, I FINALLY BOUGHT A BIG FIDDLE LEAF FIG, ITS IS GOING GREAT, HAD IT A FEW MONTHS, NOW, IN THE SOUTH WINDOW, OF COURSE MY WINDOWS HAVE WINDOW CLING TO BLOCK OUT THE BRIGHT SUN, I AM ACTUALLY LOVING THIS PLANT THAT I ALWAYS THOUGHT BUTT UGLY HAHA

I just found this plant several months ago. It is absolutely beautiful. It is only about five to six inches long with lots of really dark leaves. Bought two in the one inch starter pots. Put them together in a four inch tera cata pot. They are really starting to grow.

Theres actually a lot more species than what people seem! Theres Platinum, Treubii (Kalimantan, Indonesia), Officinalis, Silver Hero, Silver Splash, Silver Cloud, Tattoo, Noid, Hederaceus, Argyraeus (Indonesia form), Exotica Sumatera, and lots more! It tends to have slightly different patterns on every different country like Indonesia, Philippines. So they consider it as different varieties.

This plant is new to me and I love everything about it. I did a couple quick searches to get an idea of the price though and OOF gonna have to wait on that one for a bit!

In love with Scindapsus, I've never seen this one, and I want it! And the "regular" form of treubii.. love them both... I have argyreii(sp?) and the exotica. Very pretty plants, all of them...

I love this plant, I have a scindapsus pictus that I really love but has been a pain ever since I got it, with mealybugs and being very sensitive to humidity levels, hopefully it will calm down soon-- so dramatic.

i finally got my plant, oml its beautiful, so so glad i ordered this its so different, i got the 4 inch pot and its a nice size plant, i think i am in love haha, now i want another one, i have never seen one here, only on Etsy any where else i looked they are around 200 to 300 dollars , for a small one, wow, i only paid 23.00 for mine and it had 12 leaves and 2 new ones coming out so i got lucky for sure, so so happy with this plant, i want more of it, not fond of the light colored form, but this dark, is amazing, but its very different than most its leaves are much thicker, i am unsure how to water this one, i dont want to loose it

they said when i got it it is more like a philodendron and it is for sure, nice thick leaves and its a tough plant, i also got a maiden hair fern, it was lovely but an hour after i took it out of the box, the leaves turned black and curled, i wont be buying one of those again for sure, never saw a plant do that it was lovely when i un boxed it, but wow an hour and it was crispy.

This species is rarely seen in nurseries even in its native region here in Indonesia. Luckily I found one cheaply under $1 from a remote nursery. It grows slowly, but it is beatiful. Singapore Botanical garden has this plant grown under a big tree.

I have a Scindapsus treubii and I over watered it :( But lucky I could save some parts and now I´m VERY careful with watering 😂

My dark form is developing some yellowing on the tip of the leaves. I'm thinking it can't take a lot of light so I'm placing mine away from any light source lol Best of luck to me!

its also a slow grower i have one it dsnt grow but stil alive and i toke cuttings from it they ddnt root yet but also alive 😊🌿

Do you know what the moisture meter should read when this plant needs water?

Mine got root rot 🥺😭 I cut the rot, let it callus over for a few hours and put rooting hormone on it. She’s been sitting in water ever since (last 2ish weeks) and I’ve been using a spray bottle with water to give it oxygen every day. Anything else you think I should be doing? I really hope she makes it 🙏🏻

they have them on etsy but they are spendy , wow oml i wawnt this plant, absolutely love this type of plant, so much, i must have one but gonna have to find a deal on Etsy, only place i have ever seen one that is half way affordable a palnt the size of yours would cost about 300 , they are very expensive,

I bought the silver variety about a month ago, it's already putting out new leaves and the leaves curl when it needs water. My home average humidity is about 55%. Would love to find the dark variety too!

Tabatha Holtz do you mean the Scindapsus treubii moonlight or the Scindapsus pictus exotica or argyreus? The pictus is much more common and cheap. If your plant was $50+ you got the treubii

I've just started seeing the 'Moonlight' on the market. My local plant shop reserved it for me while I was away, so looking forward to growing that cultivar too myself Tabatha. Are you growing up yours a stake or letting it hang by chance?

@@summerrayneoakes no pole, under regular white LED lights + ambient light from a west floor to ceiling window, lots of new growth. I have found that regular white LED lights grow plants surprisingly well, I've been growing African Violets under shop lights in my basement for 3 years (12 hours/day), they flower regularily.

Hi Summer, I am from Belgium. We haven't seen this plant on market. Either from any online shop from NL. I think they are not in local garden center too. Because non of the Dutch plant lovers on Facebook groups is showing it. Could you please share with us where you got the cutting in Netherlands?

I've definitely seen the non-dark form (Silver Form) all throughout the Netherlands, so I definitely know you can get it there. Otherwise, sometimes Ara Flora has it. The dark form I haven't seen in the Netherlands myself. Asia definitely has it in proliferation.

My dark form is not as dark as yours I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. If anyone could give me advice on this that be great. Maybe I did not get a good genetic dark form :(

If you think scindapsus pictus grows like a weed give this one something it can shingle up against! 😲🌿 Kids don't try this at home if you have limited space 😆

Seeing it shingle in the wild, it seems to grow longer, thinner leaves. Also the "silver" version seems to turn dark as it shingles. Is that your experience with it Peter?

@@summerrayneoakes yes totally! Treubii will definitely settle in and stretch out flat right up a totem. Silver will keep its large leaves and they will darken and take on an obsidian like darkish green. However, I've found the variation of Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’ does hold true to its lighter color of its common name of "Satin". Silver and Satin are very similar plants but they act quite different once they successfully latch on!
