Scoliosis causes the spine to curve to one side. The curvature can be in any part of the spine, but the most commonly affected regions are the upper spine and lower back.
Various exercises can help with scoliosis, and experts propose a range of strategies. However, they all aim to realign the spine, rib cage, shoulders, and pelvis to achieve a typical posture.

Oh, my gosh!!! I don't ever have words right now! I'm 62, disabled since before 30 from frank herniation of L4/5 and L5 S1, 2 failed surgeries, then in 2013 a failed ablation that killed more than "just sensory nerves" on the right and nothing on the left. Since then, my mild S Scoliosis in that area is HUGE, because the left muscles are still very strong while the right side is flaccid. Extensive damage to both legs and feet, and now everything that can be wrong with a spine is at one level or another, including spondylosis, spondylolisthesis, stenosis, and retrolisthesis. I'm not very strong and athletic like I was before. I used to be a multi talented athlete, loved hiking, fishing, running, swimming, etc. I walk (barely) with a cane, and can't do much of anything any more. Being a widow like this is hard. Went off of all pain meds on my own this year after March 13, so I'm thankful to be alive at all, after 32+ years of allopathic/pharmaceutical/surgical "interventions". So ,thank you so very much for this video. Couldn't afford a chiropractor on SSI, Medicaid won't cover one, so I was going to give up. Can't thank you enough for this, and for all you share with us here. May The Father bless you for your kindness and concern for others.

PG, even if you have mikd to moderate scoliosis, mine us measured as dextroscoliosis at 25 degrees, which has worsened over tge past few years , most doctors including orthopedic doctors , really don't know (not Dr. Mandel), how much it affects the body. A spine surgeon I consulted with at Mt. Sinai , for my spinal issues, was the only one who stressed that. I visited 6 different doctors for my issues including stenosis and facet joint arthritis, but he indicated what seemed to me as just common sense. The twisting of the spine , mine curves to the right and twists as well, can cause difficulty to breathe, digestive issues, etc. The nerves that get pinched affect all your organs. Relief from advice from doctors like Dr. Mandel is INVALUABLE. Many if not all doctors jyst tell you take a pill. By the way, all the surgeons that I consulted with said, no surgery for you. One said , "I would have to reconstruct your lumbar spine. Too much arthritis and disc degradation. Noboby is going to touch that". According to a PA friend of mine, means a very poor outcome for pain alleviation and therefore would reflect on thier success rates and statistics .

Just this morning my doctor said there was nothing I could do to improve my scoliosis. Upon arriving at home, I immediately searched for what you might have to say on the subject and did the exercises. I felt my muscles working in a new way, and I noticed a little light-headed feeling from improved blood circulation. Thank you for the exercises and for your encouragement and for being a constant resource.

Hi this the first time I have done this, I have watched it several times, and yes I feel the stretch. I plan to keep doing this as my scoliosis is so debilitating and exhausting. I don’t know what degree my curvature is I knowi need it stopped now. My Dr. thinks because I’m 90+years of age I should just live with it. That is not going to happen, I will do what I can to get as straight as I possibly can. Thank you for this exercise. LK from Canada ❤❤😊 12:55

One question has always puzzled me: Is it necessary to strengthen the apparently weak side? Or is it about simply loosening the muscles on both sides?
@tinadaniels1112

I have this question as well
@katiescarlett5249
@katiescarlett5249 3 года назад
Hi Roger, after some research, I believe the muscles in the concave side are weaker. So, stretch both sides and strengthen the side that is on the inside of the “c”. The muscles on the outside of the”c” are well developed. You can go to spiralspine.com and Erin Meyers addresses this question. If you have pain and go to a regular physical therapist they will exercise both sides the same and it just reinforces your present muscle imbalances. I have spent so much money on the wrong PT! I think if I was able to address the muscle imbalances, I would feel a lot better... I think there is a strong possibility that the curve would decrease as well. I hope that makes sense. This video doesn’t address each curve type.

@@katiescarlett5249, I’m 68 and have had severe scoliosis since it was discovered at 15. I wore a brace for a short while, but being a teenager, I snuck around and went without it a lot. I have always been very active but got more serious about in my 40’s about stretching because I had years of pain with sciatica. For years, I have stretched for 5 minutes, every morning before getting out of bed and every night for 5 mins before going to sleep. My stretches are mostly bringing my knees to my chest and holding, but elongated stretches too. I also, about the same time, on advice from a back surgeon, got a gym bar for the doorway of my bedroom and I hang all my weight on it several times a day. In the last 2 years, I do 10 partial pull-ups (cuz I can’t pull up all the way ;) in morning and at night, just to strengthen the muscles along my spine. Before starting all this, my curve was 69% and 8 years ago (last X-ray I had) it had gone to 64%. I’m sure it’s even better now and I can do almost anything. I garden several days a week (I have a food forest) and it’s very physical gardening, including spreading a dump load truck full of mulch twice a year. I also swim (which is great exercise.) My grandkids love that I can climb around on the monkey bars with them (their moms can’t even do that ;) and even hang upside down and flip off them. The whole thing to scoliosis is that you have to keep moving! I have recently started having some acupuncture and that helps a lot too.

Remember to lengthen the spine as you move, this is very important for anyone... but especially those with scoliosis.. otherwise we move with compression, instead of inviting more space between the vertebrae...

Can you reverse scoliosis? If you have scoliosis already (even if it is severe), you can reverse the condition. Depending on the severity, it may take time and effort on your part to fully heal and reverse your spine curvature. If you already have spinal curvature or if you want to prevent it, proper posture never hurts.👍

Love your exercises, doctor and videos. For me, stretching, makes things worse I’ve spent the last 4+ years trying to strengthen the shoulder, stabilizers serratus, rhomboids, etc. lower mid traps. My upper traps and elevator are constantly contracted. Stretching used to feel good and strengthening even though for some reason something is inhibiting my progress. I do believe now that is a nervous/brain system issue. There’s another modality called postural restoration that actually deals with the rib cage, which is where I think my problem stems from but it has now gone to my neck, hips and of course my spine. The nervous system just won’t let go . I have a thoracic curve to the left. Which is a little more uncommon. My pain is left-sided rib cage thoracic area. My right side, no pain but that is the shortened side from head to toe (muscles). All feel tight. In this video, what muscles are you actually working and how are you actually lengthening them ? if one side is shorter/tighter than the other side, should you be doing both sides equally? that’s me! I believe it’s more than a strengthening stretching issue now maybe at the beginning it was, but I’m far beyond that.

I have had scoliosis since I was 15 yrs old, ( I am 46 now) its not the only thing wrong with my skeletal structure......my probs are only partially helped by these exercises, as my legs were run over by a car when I was 8 yrs old, right over both my femurs. Because my legs were still growing, and they were both fractured, I ended up with my legs being very very different in length. Sadly my left leg is nearly 2 inches shorter then my right. So, there really is no leveling out of my pelvis or spine. I am not able to afford the special shoes I was told to get when I was all of 19 yrs old. I have been "disabled" for most of my life due to this and several other bone problems due to severe trauma over my younger years. The exercises do help when things get very very tight and achy. But it doesn't help the pain in my spine and nerves especially at the back of the pelvic girdle.

I am 78 years old. Suffering with scoliosis for since I can remember. I started with you're exercises one week ago. So glad that I don't have to lie on the floor because that became nearly impossible for me. I already feel some relief. I am from South Africa. 😊

Thank you, I have been to an orthopedic doctor and a chiropractor for my scoliosis, and some of these exercises I am seeing for the first time. I will be doing these regularly. My curve is c-shaped, in the lower back. I have terrible tightness and pain on the right side of my lower back and constant pain in the right hip. If there is anything else that might help with this, I would be so grateful if you could go over additional measures as well. Again, your videos are so helpful and I always learn something! God bless you Dr. Mandell, from Amber in Alabama.

I'm just absoulty blown away! I have scoliosis and I have so much pain that I have trouble sleeping at night or just doing most everyday chores. I was told they couldn't do surgery and basically nothing could be done. I'm looking forward to trying these exercieses. Thanks so much!

A big thank you for this video. I’ve been going to chiropractors for decades, I’m 73, and none have given me any exercises to help with my pain and tightness.

do these exercises work for the tilted pelvis too and does an inversion table work for scoliosis?

Thank you. I need to figure out how to get over the pain of scoliosis. I’m trying every exercise possible. Maybe these exercises will help. I was told my 4th lumbar is twisted and slanted. Scary when pain overtakes the body.

Hello Dr. I have been doing these exercises for a couple of weeks now, the one I’m unsure is the one where you instruct to go down the outside of the opposite leg then slowly ie slide the hand up the outside of the right leg, you know which one I am referring to,, I don’t seem to feel any stretch at that point. The others I am ok with I am taking treatments for my scoliosis, I want to make sure I’m doing the right ones. I am 91 years of age but that doesn’t mean I have to be a cripple. Thank you for this information and video. LK from Canada ❤❤❤😊😊😊 God Bless you too.

Thank you Dr Alan. I always have a problem with that last exercise as I am not sure if I am doing it right - when I am pulling the belly button and as I turn, there is a tendency to hold my breath. Think I am doing it incorrectly?
