The ScotRail "Push-Pull" set is seen in action on test runs along the West Coast Main Line on Wednesday 08th February 2023. The Class 47 and newly formed ScotRail "Push-Pull" set are seen three times in todays video, first at Bamfurlong and then twice at Wigan. All three times see the "Shove Duff" on the rear with the DBSO leading as part of it's return to service tests.
This locomotive, 47712 "Lady Diana Spencer" and this "Push-Pull" set are scheduled to operate a railtour in a few weeks which will see them on their old stomping grounds between Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. While 47712 has ran for LSL it had been out of action for a few months and it along with the newly acquired and overhauled DBSO were scheduled several shakedown runs this week. These were to run between Crewe and Chester however (fortunately for me) a train caught fire on that route so the "Shove Duff" was sent my way. There was no gen on this one, I clocked it on my map heading north (ironically passing Bamfurlong) while I was at home and had to scramble to get out for the other workings...
A fantastic throwback to the good old days once again on offer courtesy of the folks over at Locomotive Services Limited, an authentic looking ScotRail set is something I didn't think I'd ever see again in the flesh but they did it. I do wonder what they will do next ;) *My first proper model train was a ScotRail Class 47 like the one here, just numbered 47709.
What a way to start the year off :) :) :)
The workings today were;
5P45 Crewe - Crewe Gresty Lane
5P55 Crewe Gresty Lane - Crewe H.S
*Apologies for the heavy breathing on the third shot, I literally had to run from the pub to catch it as it absolutely flew between Euxton and Wigan and came into view barely one second after I hit record.

Always been fascinated by push-pulls. I've been focusing on the TFW ones on the Manchester To Crewe Line recently. Now all they need to do is build more and use them every day😏. And it's great how Avanti now have three trains.

I am someone who is not a 'full railyway buff', but who has more than just a 'general interest' in railways. Can someone explain to me the purpose of push-pulls and why there are not far more trains like this?
@RunawayTrain2502
@RunawayTrain2502 Год назад
The purpose is you don't have to run around the train at each end of the line wich saves time and hassle. Even discarding the the rest of the world, Push-pull trains have quite a long history in the UK. The earliest welll known examples probably being the GWR's "Auto-Coaches" running push-pull services with steam locomotives wich ran on Rural branchlines in the South-West of England and in Wales from the 1900's untill the 60's. Another good example are the sets that had been in use on the ECML from the 80's untill recently. wich consist of a combined control & bagage car or Driving Van Trailer (DVT) a rake of Mk 4's and a Class 90 locomotive. The Brand-New Mk5's have cabcars too. Another example in the British Isles is most of Iarnród Éireann's trains from the end of Irish steam, untill the late 2000's/early 2010's where push-pull.

@dodahspeak Год назад
@@RunawayTrain2502 thanks for taking the time for compiling your detailed explanation. Very much appreciated. But why are there not far, far more examples of this in operation today than you give examples?
@winco68
@winco68 Год назад
There is no need for trains like this nowadays as most trains are units ie driving compartments at either end with one or both being motorised. Non motorised driving trailers control the motorised unit from the opposite end. This was a concept that initially applied only to slower local trains typically diesel and electric multiple units. Over time it evolved into push/pull operation with faster mainline trains. To save time with running locos around the train at destinations etc a loco was placed on either end of the train then driving trailers were created where only one loco was used but could be controlled from the driving trailer as seen here. Eventually with the introduction of such trains as the voyagers, pendolinos, azumas etc they were the same at either end removing the need for separate locos as the driving units and trailers were integral parts of the train including passenger compartments. Locomotive haulage is now confined mainly to freight trains and the need for locomotives to run around passenger trains has been removed.

@@dodahspeak It is a bit of a history of the railway and comes down to the progress of technology. As Merijn said we've had remote driving cars for well over 100 years but on short, slow local trains. This was to save time and resource on running locomotives around the train when it changed direction at the end of the line. In steam days the connection to the locomotive was mechanical and there was always a fireman still in the loco in case anything went wrong. Since the switch to diesel and electric there have been 3 solutions: 1, Multiple units - Diesel, where the engines are in the undercarriage or a compartment of a carriage or electric, where the transformers are in a compartment and the traction motors are on the bogie. 2. Locos at either end - The Glasgow to Edinburgh route had this with two Class 27s, one pushing, one pulling. The Intercity 125 was an evolution of this concept into a fixed rake and at higher speed. Other High speed trains in Europe like the TGV used a similar concept. 3. A loco at one end and an unpowered driving car at the other as seen here. Nowadays we mostly have multiple units but the technology for high speed multiple units is only relatively recent, especially for diesels where there weren't powerful enough engines that were also compact enough to fit under a carriage and refined enough not to deafen and vibrate passengers unacceptably. (I'd argue that when we got 125mph Voyagers at the turn of the century we still didn't have the technology, but by then no one gave a damn about passenger comfort, only about how much money could be made). Before that the technology meant options 2 and 3 were better. The Scotrail Glasgow to Edinburgh service from 1979 pushed the game forward in the UK as it addressed some of the challenges around communication from remote driving car to loco and passenger comfort when the brakes come on in push mode (the train brakes have to come on before the loco or you get uncomfortable jolts through the train). There are plenty more examples than those listed, several examples still in use across the world.

Not really a fan of Push-Pull trains apparence this formations resemble a multiple unit when on push running rather than the classic train we all know loco first, so i believe LSL likewise on Intercity formations might strugle to attract enthusiasts when and if put this Scotrail formation on tours as it happened with intercity formation. Working Extras services purposes like for Avanti West Coast throughout Her Majesty's funeral week last year for instance, would be very useful, specially on non-electrified lines as a class 47 matching its livery would be permanently allocated to provide traction i guess.Thank you for sharing the video.

On the contrary, that is exactly the train consist when they worked the Glasgow to Edinburgh shuttles in the 1980s, class 47 loco at one end, five Mark 3 coaches, and a driving coach (DBSO) at the other end. The only difference is that most of the Mark 3 coaches would have been standard class rather than first class
