Scott great theater! I noticed you have both a 2x4 and 4x10, curios do you use Bass EQ? I'm also curious what your house curve looks like. I've got two of the dual 6k watt units on order myself and now I'm wondering about a 3rd :)
@pastaman6099
@pastaman6099 Год назад
Hey Scott, really kickass system here! Just one question: are you actually running 1500 watts to each buttkicker? I had 2 of them and a single channel of my Behringer EP2500 was too overkill for 1 unit, regularly setting it into thermal protection and making the pistons clank themselves unless I set a limiter on from the miniDSP. From what I've seen from monitoring the wall outlet, They're really only able to handle about 300 watts max from the teens to about 30 Hz, and below that down to 5 Hz was only able to take around 100 watts a piece. Putting 2 in series made it significantly easier for them to handle the power better by increasing the impedance (decreases the amps power draw), and splitting that power half and half to each unit, and the Behringer still could manage bottoming them both, just much less extreme, lol.

Youthman, I sure hope more folks get to visit with others in the HT/Audio hobby and help each other very soon. Like you and Scott said about the simple free tweeks that could help with issues in the systems. It doesn't have to take a $10k budget for superb sound, just some wise gear choices and set-up. My system is very budget minded (under $2k) and I am very happy with it, but I am working on improvements as time and money allows. Please keep up the great content. Thanks.

I share the addiction and it’s relentless, I am usually only content for about a month before I need more, or rearrange everything on my journey for what I consider perfection. My theater is 12 x 14 and eight foot ceiling with one JTR Captivator 4000ulf and 3 FI car audio 18’s that I built the boxes for. I’m pushing 21,700 watts to all the subs and it took a long time and a lot of patience to get a handle on the rattles and I had to use screws to keep the pictures from rattling and or falling. So I can only imagine what the 6000 watt captivators sound like.

Scott - interested to hear about the electrical upgrades. Did you have existing room in your panel to add all the 30A 240V breakers? Did your house upgrade from 200A to 400A service or 400A to 600+A (CT'ed) service that required the power company to set a new meter? I'd be interested to know how much it cost for the electrian to do his work if you're willing to share.

9:25 just because the way energy works... that's why it takes TONS of power to make an earthquake at ultra low frequency, but it doesn't take much energy to snap your fingers to make higher frequency sounds easily. It's not that our perception works as such, but it's because it takes twice the energy to produce sound each lower octave at the same sound pressure level. Psychoacoustics and the way we process sound is still really cool too though!

With those 228rm’s how loud did the midrange get with all of those subs? The reason I ask is because I’m considering getting 210rms which would technically fit in my space better or 215‘rm’s to future proof and have the option of more overhead. The 210rm’s are more my size preference but with a couple subs will I be happy with mitts and vocals in a medium to large size living room or theater? I really don’t want to have to buy another front stage because later on down the road I’m trying to afford more subs, wiides and 4 to 6 height channels.
@Youthman
@Youthman 2 года назад
Let’s put it this way, your ears will give out long before the speakers will. The 210 will have no problem keeping up with your subwoofers. If you want better midrange, look at the JTR models with “R” in the model number as they have the higher end coaxial driver.

How is he doing the whole 1500 watts to each buttkicker?!? 5 Hz at full blast is only like 100 watts a unit, it’s really not that hard to bottom them out. Don’t get me wrong, I have a couple of them and they’re absolutely incredible, but their max power draw is in the teens to about 30 hz, only about 300 watts a piece before they start clanking.

No doubt it all depends what your into at the time, I had bikes, cts-v, corvette, but with all the little ones around now the theater is much more practical, it gets used often regardless of weather and the kids all enjoy it, when they grow up I’ll get back into cars, but i won’t let the theater go lol 😂, ive always had some kind of system as long as I remember, the cars and bikes sat a lot between running a business and family

Yes I’m fully aware which is why I used hearing protection on this trip. At home, I’m typically around -10 to -15dB below Reference depending on the movie.

Youthman, you really have to convince me on the sub quantity in such a small space. I personally have never been in a theater space with this many subwoofers, but I find it hard to believe that any more than 2 really good quality units will be super duper amazing beyond belief. Is this a subwoofer showdown with folks who have bigger, better, more money, blow the windows out, craziness, ambition than the average Joe? The videos are great, the theaters amazing, but I'm seriously skeptical about having so much bottom end. In other words, the movie is meaningless, and my audience is only thinking about the bass.
@theatremad9797
@theatremad9797 3 года назад
Yea sometimes less means more. The only thing I can come up with that would make a difference having more than two subs would be the balance and evenness of the bass around the room if it’s calibrated properly.As for the power I think it’s way overkill.
@BassBringsUsTogether
@BassBringsUsTogether 3 года назад
The amount of power and excursion it would take for 2 subs to get anywhere close to the spl i was looking for into the single hertz range wound be so high in distortion and still probably fall short from what my goals were, if you want high spl at a very low frequency and perfect seat to seat consistency there is no way around this 🤷‍♂️, most people don’t care to put the effort into chasing super low hertz because they just can’t justify it, which I under stand but I won’t look down on someone for it 😘, but guess what some of us do care for that experience and neither publicly or privately have i heard any complaint from any guest at any one of my multiple get togethers over the years, most responses are “I completely get it now” their is a completely different experience of listening to a clip or movie at “reference” when I system is being maxed out and on another setup that’s working 40% and absolutely no compression on any lfe content… and having that experience at every seat … some get this and some don’t.. I still appreciate you watching the video and voicing your concerns it’s a hobby and no right and wrong answers and everyone will approach a hobby from what ever angle they enjoy 😘…. The title of the video wasn’t “this is how you should build your home theater” have an amazing day
@GaryPiazza
@GaryPiazza 3 года назад
@@BassBringsUsTogether Agree with you 100%. My main question is, and I apologize for not being clear enough, if I'm watching a movie and the bass and low frequency are so intense, does that take me out of the movie? Am I marveling at the tech and not the film? If you have a balance and you've enhanced the movie experience by properly tuning all this gear, is it going to improve the movie experience for the audience without taking them out of the actual movie? By the way, I am totally curious and would jump at the chance to feel that so I can understand how it all works.
@BassBringsUsTogether
@BassBringsUsTogether 3 года назад
@@GaryPiazza the easy answer to that is most people like and enjoy the lfe channel somewhat “hot” whether it’s 1 or 2 dB or 20, I feel most people enjoy somewhere in the 4db-8db range. Well if a system is being tuned to its capabilities say 20hz, then a couple 15’s will probably do the trick in a small/medium sized room. And if you wanna do say 15hz or so then a couple 18’s will probably do reference in those same rooms, but if you want to do that with a “house curve” or a few dB hot then it becomes harde, now if you wanna do that at 10hz, we are talking massive amounts of air needs to be moved 10 or 20x the power involved… that’s why most don’t even bother to try for that as it’s overall a pain and can get pricey quickly… so if you want to get involved into single digits it’s even more! Few movies have single hertz scenes and they are super super fun with a capable system, and if you use BEQ on other movies you have to have a ton of fire power on hand … my system is tuned with a pretty aggressive house curve from about 8hz and up, so for a great experience with a 8hz scene it taxes my setup but it does it without any distortion and makes for an enjoyable experience… so the other side of that is, at all other frequencies you have unlimited head room and power, that just gives you capabilities For extreme output on everything else… but the reason the setup was built the way it was to be able to handle the lowest of lows at reference levels without any sense of distortion… A couple of 1000 watt 18’s will not give you that at reference at 8hz and especially if you want to run that with any kind of house curve or the lfe channel hot in any way

You are correct. Sub 20Hz is bass that you can feel.
@BassBringsUsTogether
@BassBringsUsTogether 3 года назад
Most people can’t really hear below 20 or certainly, the lower bass has a sensation/feeling to it that you almost refer to as hearing because if I watch something that has some 15hz bass in it then rewatch it immediately after installing a sharp filter cutting anything off under 20hz, it certainly sounds different… but for the lower bass to be of any relevance it needs to db’s higher than say 30hz and up
