HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

Hey guys n gals how are you all? Great I hope🤔 now today I'm not really sure what I'm melting down but that's half the fun of pulling these pieces apart as you never know what to expect but I saw it at the scrapyard it was very heavy and I thought it'll be a fun little project. Almost 5 kg of metal to add to the stack so very happy with the end result. Now I did stamp the bar incorrectly but you'll see that in the video. Ok it's time to sit back enjoy the extra long video today and I will see all you sensational subs next Friday. And as always have a happy safe weekend😀👋🏻

Hey there bigstackD Casting, thats a very high power inverter, those IGBT (Insulated gate bipolar transistore) blocks & capacitors If they work which they probably do are worth a small fortune, the logc boards often blow on these but the main switching gear survives, i used to love taring down or fixing things like this but my hobby has be taken away from me by silly men with clipboards. i simply cant get stuff like this in the UK any more becuese of a rash of stupid regulations now stopping me from buying at dumps & scrapyards

I really like these videos, i don't know why. That said seeing the recycling process really makes a point of why reusing comes before recycling. Even when it is totally justified because none of them work anymore, its heartbreaking seeing all those components and parts used just for material when you think about all of the energy, time and cost went into making them. Also how much value, including but not only monetary, is lost when something breaks and can't be repaired so the only option is to salvage it.
@capomundial86
@capomundial86 2 года назад
@Forrest Farris I totally agree, and that's why reducing waste, IE not buying wasteful / obsolescent items , is the first part of the chain. IDK, maybe it's just that the gearhead in me get all "lets fix this" every time i see some rusty bucket of bolts so It just breaks my heart seeing machines left to rot to the point they are only worth the salvage.

New neighbors had to replace their water heater. Was sitting in their back yard for about a week, and I offered to take care of it for them. Pulled 7kg of copper, 5kg of brass, and 4 kg of bronze out of it. Think I'll make a BBQ out of the shell. . . Cause of failure? Galvanic corrosion of the thermocouple. Copper, bronze, brass, and steel all in contact at the one spot at the base that has electrical potential. Going to teach their kids to sandcast tin this summer.

I check the dumpster every time we are there. Fire suppression guy was there changing out water pipe and replacing sprinkler heads....he threw pounds and pounds of brass out....and piles of short steel. I pulled every last piece out of that dumpster....all kinds of wire as well. A hundred here...a hundred there...means nothing to the rich....I'm not rich. I pull it. Awesome video friend. Been soooooooo windy and wet lately....no melts here in some time now....soon I hope!

Looks like this unit was a variable speed motor controller. Took AC power in on the left, went through a big transformer, rectifiers, and large capacitors to make high voltage DC, then went through an inverter to make variable speed 3-phase AC which output on the right. The rectifier and inverter modules were bolted to the aluminum heat sink. Transformer was on the bottom left, capacitors on the middle right. Several circuit boards controlled the motor speed, power, and enforced protection for overcurrent, overspeed, etc. Control panel looked like it had buttons to manually raise or lower the speed.

Watching the aluminum melting, reminded me of the last scene in the "Terminator" movie. Also brought back memories from when I was in junior high school, had the chance out of 40 other students to work in our small foundry. We did aluminum ingots. Turnnig them into various art molds. Whole process from shifting the sand , moisture check on sand, ramming the mold, final pour. It was great going into the next class all sweaty.

@bigstackD
@bigstackD 2 года назад
I’ve never ever considered using a Crucible as a mold although I have had a lot of metal freeze in the bottom of a few but basically you’re only looking at a small rounded ingot full of holes and doesn’t look very good at all. Maybe a small Crucible would make a better mold but until my small crucibles are at their end I’ll just leave that for now. Every time I see you need to cut something into pieces I half expect you to just pull out an ax, for some reason.

When you get the scrap from the scrap yard, do they charge you scrap value or a set value for the stuff you want?
@MasterBlaster3545
@MasterBlaster3545 2 года назад
They obviously put a percentage mark up to make some profit but he probably gets what he paid for. If the scrap amount in the object is worth $50 then that is probably what he pays. The scrap yard paid $35 and made $15. Stacked probably ends up behind for usage of gas and stuff but makes a killing on Ad revenue. Win win all around.

Bigstacked said in his past videos. The scrap yard he goes to gives him the stuff for free. As long as he is not going to sell the metal afterwards. I'm pretty sure this is the deal he has with the scrap yard..

Actually Robert your half right, on a local industrial site when I go through the scrap bins my mate is the boss and he lets me take everything for free as long as I melt it down on a future video and keep it in the stack but at the scrapyard I basically pay close to what they buy it for, they look after me as a few of them watch my videos👊🏻😁

I don't know if anyone else thinks the same way, but the best part about these melts is any sizable Aluminium pours, something about it just relaxes me and interests me more than any of the others. I could easily sit here and watch melts and pours of just aluminum for a very long time.

BigstackD, Have you tried creating copper acetate crystals with the copper residu ? More info can be found on crystalverse copper-acetate-crystals

Love watching you go to the scrap yard and bringing something home to break down and melt. Would love to see more castings. The bars are fun, but still neat to see what goes into making other stuff.

VSD/starter for a pump motor. Large capacitors for power dump when starting up. The 'PU' designation code on the side of the stainless steel orange box is the pump identification number for a process plant etc so you know what pump you are starting and working on.

Another pleasant morning watching BigstackD melt useless equipment into usable blocks of metal. The Videos make for a good start to a Friday morning ( along with a good cup of coffee) today is the first day in a long time I was able tonwatch the whole video on my front porch without freezing to death or having my coffee cool down to an undrinkable state since Coffee must be consumed hot ( IMO ). Hope everyone had a great day!

@ 9:58 when you were putting the circuit boards aside, that gold colored object on the one board is a heat sink. Usually made of aluminium or copper. if it isn't screwed in place, simply pry it off to break the adhesive, maybe even heat it slightly with a heat gun first

I seem to have an obsession with collecting brass. The idea is to eventually buy a furnace to melt. My mrs takes the piss when I find some brass and say “that’s a nice bit of brass. You dismantling that unit and saying the same thing, you’ve gained a subscriber 😂 As I’m a mechanic and love brass I have a suggestion… you should cast some 10mm sockets out of brass!

Always liked how aluminum has a very distinct 'plastic-like' phase just before it melts.

Let me make 1 thing clear here. I have seen channels that big himself has helped grow and I have not seen 1 video where he gets the acknowledgement that he deserved. There is only 1 original channel about smelting and thats fucking Big stack. They guy knows how to stack them and the guy is a PRO.. his videos has gave me motivation to not be afraid to try what I would love to do. Love his channel.

10 mm bolt to secure a ground cable, must be high voltage or a in field repair. Yeah, must pack a punch , high voltage or amperage . These videos are so useful, just to see internals of machines . This is an excellent way too gain some material knowledge 👌 And just plain old satisfaction to disassemble ❤️ Those socks are , and say this like daffy. despicable, just despicable 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 No way great socks man👍

I love the ongoing 10mm gag. Problem is that it is true. Both sockets and wrenches are capable of sprouting legs and running away.

I worked in a lead smelter in Missouri for 22 years. We also melted aluminum to make alloys. If the ally melts with no foam on top it's pure. If it has foam it's an alloy. It could have calcium , arsenic, tin or sodium or any or all of them.
