I remember when these first came out. I was working at a ford dealership and used to pre delivery inspect these. Fun fact: The tailgate is actually an F-150 Flairside tailgate.

Oh wow that crazy and all honesty I've seen my friend's f150 tail gate so many times I honestly thought that it looked like an f150 tailgate when Jay opened it up.
@rj78productions88
@rj78productions88 4 года назад
If you look close at it, you can see the top of the tailgate matches the flairside tailgates of the 97 and up body style of the F-150's. They added the plastic trim to the bottom for the sport trac. The second gen went with the newer F-150 body style tailgate. I tested the theory back when I worked at the dealership by swapping the tailgates between 2 stock units to verify and sure enough, they were the same.

I yave an 03 mercuty mountaineer SUY type, same as the ford exploder. Its got the same motor. 4.0 SOHC V-6. Alumininum tubing thats carries coolant to the rear heat unit burst. The machine set idling on the driveway and overhested and ran itself to death. I pulled the motor to diagnose the damage. It would restart and run good until it warmed up and then the oil pressure would drop to 0 psi.founf a piece of broken chain guide rail in the oil pan. Did a full teardown inspection, heads wete bad,( cam bearong surfave is machined in the head, no oil pressure had damaged the bearing surface. So now I knew I needed heads, compleye chain set and of course with it running so hot the rings had lost their tension. I concidered a rebuild of the unit but after pricing components found ot a better deal to buy a recon craye unit with 3 yr warranty. $3,184.00 later I installed a fresh reconned crate motor in it, its been doing great for almost 7 yrs now. I did some resrarch, the motors are designed by mazda/ford engine plant in germany. Good motor but yhe timimg chain system is stupid. Oh yeah, never put a heavier oil in motor, it requires 5w30, thicker oil will not get to thr top end very good due to the oiling system design. I live the sport trac's but hate such a sorry designed motor. I would have love to dropva 5.0 V-8 in it. I had a chance to buy a sport trac that had motor issues for cheap. Found out it was the 4.0 SOHC and said nope, no way. I wish I knew why when they built the best little 5.0 V-8 would they even design a V-6 sohc. The dealerships around here refuse to do timing chain replacement job, you have to pull the motor. The dealers will only do a complete motor replace. The 4.0 SOHC is a good motor but when they break, their gone. I call em a 100K disposable motor.....

I had one of these for 10 years. Great truck. Mine had the timing chain rattle for 8 out of the 10 years. I never bothered to fix it because of how expensive the fix was. I just ran a more heavy oil weight and replaced the timing chain tensioners. I sold it with over 200k miles on it and it was still running strong even with the rattle.

I bought my son a 2003 Sport Trac for his first truck. He kinda didn't like it at first, but now, he's in love with it.. Hauls all kinds of stuff in it. He just graduated,. So I put in a sound system for with subwoofer.. I pulled the engine and did the chains and tensioners with Ford parts,. Painted the engine ford gray, replaced the evap coil,. And resealed everything with RTV Gray.. 2 years, no leaks. Runs like a champ. Probably the best truck ford ever made.

Passed mine on to my son as well. It was an '02 in color Toreador Red and about to hit 138k miles. Plastics on the interior were starting to deteriorate, but the body and paint still look great for an 18 year old truck. Engine leaks some oil, but overall still runs smooth and strong and the 4-wheel drive still works. Just upgraded to a 2020 Tacoma, but I'll always have a soft spot for the Explorer Sport Trac.

I still have one of these. It is a 2004 4x2 with 257k miles on the clock and still runs well. I've owned it since new, with a build date of January 2004. At this point, I'll probably just run it until the wheels fall off. All I've had to do was replace an alternator, water pump housing, and overhaul the suspension along with usual wear parts like brake pads and belts. It's currently weeping oil from the valve covers but it's so low none of it makes it to the garage floor, and the loss isn't noticeable between oil changes. I'll probably go ahead and replace the valve cover gaskets soon, just because.

I had one of these as my first vehicle. White, 2WD, XLT model with 75k on it when it was given to me. These things will do burnouts and donuts no problem. It was the easiest vehicle I've driven to do a brake stand burnout in. Brake stand it for about 5 seconds and one the wheels will break loose. One wheel peel though because open diff. I don't believe these have traction control because I never had to disable anything to spin tires. I had 2 12" subs in a dual box just sitting in the backseat with the amp sitting under the seat. All unsecured, straight teenager setup. I ended up totaling it by running a yellow light as it turned red. There was a tacoma coming up to the intersection and he wasn't planning on stopping as he could see the light about to turn. He came into the intersection as I was coming through and he t boned me on the passenger side.

Yup, My pops gave me his 03 ranger with that 4.0 SOHC motor after I joined the navy. Whats funny is I also had the same setup, unsecured twin 12"s on the those little mini seats that flipped down, haha. I loved that truck, tough as nails. I know that 4.0 has that timing chain issue, but even with the pure abuse I put that ranger through, even at 130k miles when I finally got rid of it the motor was still super quiet. At worst, it would rattle for like 2 second after it sat for a while, but then shut right up. I did change the oil religiously at 5k miles though and always used synthetic.

Sometimes this rattle is the hydraulic tensioner that's failed or clogged with sludge. They are external and accessible from the top of the engine and passenger side wheel well (1 for the front chain, 1 for the rear). I swapped them both on my old 4.0L SOHC when it was starting to rattle and it fixed the issue. Use only NOS Ford parts for this, if you can find them. Aftermarket tensioners are garbage for these engines.

just noticed something, the mileage keeps rolling while ur parked, 12:01 u can see the tenths (in back) is 1. now at 13:02 is 2 and you can see it still rolling slowly. u can also see the speedometer needle move at 4:15. timing chain related issue?

Almost bought a new 2001 Ford Explorer with the same OHC 4 liter engine, but it made a lot of noise on the test drive and it had Firestone tires that were recalled shortly after, I think I dodged a bullet on that one.

Had an 05' mustang with that 4 liter and it had the same problem it had 218000 miles on it before the chains came loose and grenaded the engine

Reminds me of my teen years; My dad plays in a band and the band leader bought a Red one of these so the band had something to put equipment in and then he got involved with a gold digger and gave it to her and when the money ran out, she left with the truck...….

I wanted to get one of these trucks but then I noticed it had the 4.0 sohc so I was like hell no it was a clean one for 1500 130k if it was the 4.0OHV it would of been a good deal it’s the 4.0 OHV that lasts a long time my Mazda B4000 had the 4.0 OHV an it had 300k when I got rid of it it was reliable

My dad has an 03 that he loves to death for some reason. I've put a motor in it for the timing chain issues, 2 trans because they were slipping, a transfercase motor in it. 2 alternators, a starter. It's leaking oil from every possible place, the rear diff cover is almost rusted through, the exhaust had a rust hole in it. We don't live in the north and neither of my old cars have any rust issues. I've put 4 (or 5) lower control arms in it for ball joint play. 4 upper control arms for the same reason. 3 brake calipers have locked up. the rf brake line busted. The overhead dome light base had a short. The seat heaters like to turn themselves on randomly. I can't stand that vehicle. It's not used as a truck. It's not beat on. It's just his daily.

@Jay Smart back then in a sea of daddy's money sport tracs.. built up '99 civics, nissan hard bodys and beat up jeep comanchie's i was the only one driving a 23 year old turbo Audi fast back lol. it was not a reliable car.. but it was a different car...a cheap car lol

Sport Tracs were nice but this is a prime example of why we all hate car engineers. Why on Gods green earth do you need two timing chains on the back of the motor? 🤦🏻‍♂️
@RicardoPCGamer
@RicardoPCGamer 4 года назад
there is not 2 chains on the rear. Actually these engines have a 2 chains in the front, and 1 chain on the rear. The front chain goes from the crankshaft to jackshaft, then from the jackshaft to the front driver side cam. Then on the rear of the engine, the jackshaft turns the rear chain to the passenger side cam. Brilliant engineering they did up in Cologne Germany.

It allowed the left and right cylinder heads to be the same part,just like a pushrod engine. Ford, like Audi, hopefully learned that timing chain guides aren't the place to cheap out.
@ThePrairieDogChannel

These motors were converted from pushrod motors. Thats the reason for the weird dual chains on either side of the motor.

Wait so is the ranger 4.0 the same one as the sport trac? Or did they keep the pushrod version in the ranger
