"how did they parody this, this is already a parody" that was exactly my first thought when i heard scary movie was gonna be a thing. Scream is my favorite horror franchise exactly because it's so meta and yet it still works perfectly as a slasher flick. It's absolute genius. And the sequels are not that far behind in quality. You should definitely watch them all on the channel.

I love how Scream just knows what it wants to do and it just does it. I also love how much it messes with your brain. Most people probably think, "Oh. Billy is obviously suspicious. But the movie is pointing out how suspicious he is, so maybe that makes him less suspicious. But maybe making him less suspicious actually makes him more suspicious". And it makes you go back and forth between whether he's innocent or not. And then the reveal that yes, he is suspicious but there's also another killer. I love it. Billy and Stu have such a fun dynamic. Especially on rewatch. They definitely give off a little 💅 in their interactions. But you know what they say. Couples that stay together, slay together. And boy did they slay.

The fact that you kept saying “oh it can’t be Billy or Stu.” when it really was them the hole time, is just genuinely fun. Fun fact: A handful of lines in this movie are improvised, mostly on Matthew Lillard's (Stu's) part. "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me," was completely ad-libbed, and the iconic "You hit me with the phone, dick!" was a result of a mistake. Skeet Ulrich was supposed to slam the phone on the table, but his hands were covered in so much fake blood that it slipped out of his hand and accidentally hit Matthew. The resulting "You hit me with the phone, dick" line, was Matthew's *genuine* reaction, and it felt so fitting that they left it in. There were more improvised lines ("I always had a thing for ya, Sid" "In your dreams" to name a few), but those are the funniest imo. Bonus fun fact: Ghostface's voice actor Roger L. Jackson (Also the voice of Mojo Jojo in the Powerpuff Girls), recorded all of his lines on the set but hidden. He would be secluded in a room and talking to the actors through an actual phone call. The point was that if the actors didn't know who was talking to them, it made the experience scarier and their acting more genuine. They did this for so long, that Roger hadn't actually met any of the cast until 2015. There's a video you can find of Neve, Skeet, and Roger all on a panel together at a convention in 2015, and when asked when the former two had met Roger for the first time, the answer was "we met three weeks ago".

The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever. Wes Craven killing off the most famous person in the film in the first few minutes. An incredible amount of such famous female actors in the Scream films just too many to mention.

It's great on at least two fronts. Craven actually manages to teach a master class in horror writing/directing, while simultaneously breathing life back into the slasher genre, which by 96 was troped out and thoroughly dead. Great react Natalie, I truly enjoy revisiting these films and hearing another perspective. Been subbed a few years. Take care.

True! He manages to turn a slasher flick into a whodunnit only for the twist at the end to be that there were two killers. He purposefully sets up ways to give alibis to one or the other but never both, so if you assume there is one killer, you would never guess it. Wes Craven is absolutely unparalleled in slasher horrors.

Scream is a masterpiece in the genre. It toes the line of meta-ness while never going too overboard. The script is super tight, especially with the double killer reveal. It uses your horror knowledge against you because you've been taught to only think of one killer, but you also think Billy is too obvious of a red herring. Its also just a ton of fun, especially Stu's character.

I love how Billy is basically hiding in plain sight. He acts so creepy that you get the feeling that he has to be a red herring because it would be too obvious, then you feel like you were right when he gets fake stabbed, then the reveal is basically just like "of course he's a killer, he was acting like it the whole time!" Scream's script really makes you second guess yourself in a way that few other horror movies do.

This movie was a shot in the arm to the slasher genre when it came out. We had been subjected to all the supernature killers of the 80s and all their rip offs and the genre was starting to become boring. This movie, at the time, was a breathe of fresh air. I saw it three in the theater. It was released in December 1996 but I think it was re-released in the summer of 1997. or, maybe It was just the theater in my town that did that. FYI, Billy hitting Stu with the phone was not scripted. When When Skeet Ulrich through the phone, the fake blood made it stick to his hand and it hit Mathew Lillard by accident, but his reaction was genuine.

I think it did get rereleased, cause my friends and I went and saw it the weekend before graduation. Course back then, multiplexes would keep a movie for 6 months if people kept going to see it. But you got a point, when it came out in December, I didn’t care. The trailers made it seem really generic, and Dimension was more associated with straight to video quality movies at that time.

Fun Facts: - So when Tatum said to Dewey that the janitor is your superior, it's true cause the janitor at the school that was dressed as Freddy Krueger was Wes Craven, who directed Scream-Scream 4. He also directed the original Nightmare on Elm Street. - So before Scream came out in 96, the caller ID was not popular at all. The caller I.D. sales in the U.S. tripled after Scream was released, lol. - Billy AND Stu were at Casey's and used their girlfriends as Alibis for being out. Stu was on the patio with Steve while Billy was in the front, tormenting her on the phone. The question about "Which door am I at" was a trick question. Stu ran to the front door to let Billy in. You could hear the front door open before she went outside through the kitchen. Also, when her parents got home, the front door was open. When her mom was hearing Casey breathing on the other end of the phone line, you can hear one talking to another saying "tree," and the phone ends. Also, when Steve was tied up, he was looking at both directions of the house. - Wes Craven lol to get his actors into character emotionally like Drew Barrymore (Casey) and Neve Campbell (Sidney) right before he start to film he would run up to them and tell them something terrifying. With Drew Wes Craven would tell her real-life stories of animal cruelty to bring out her emotions and then run off and yell action, lol. - Roger L. Jackson is the voice of Ghostface for ALL of Scream movies. For every film, the actors were never allowed to meet him before or see him during filming, so that way, when they were on the phone with him, it would give them that real fear effect. Wes Craven always kept him hidden from the others to where they couldn't see him, but he was still able to see them. He also improved a lot of his lines as well. - Neve Campbell (Sidney) was originally going to say no to the film as she is especially afraid of horror movies. But when hearing her co-star Skeet Ulrich (Billy) from "The Craft" (1996) was going to appear, she agreed. They did both movies back to back that same year. - They casted Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis and gave him the same kind of hair style cause of how close he looked like to young Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street who also climbed in through a bedroom window. His last name, Loomis, is a reference to Dr. Loomis in Halloween. - Also, after he climbed through her window, the first time "Fear the Reaper" was playing. He climbed through her window to distract her and turned on her stereo to cover up the background noise of Stu kidnapping her dad. If notice he was wearing the same outfit at the end. - The news lady that was harassing Sidney "how does it feel to almost being butchered" at the school is Linda Blair from the Exorcist. - If you look really closely when Billy was "stabbed" in the bedroom, you can see Stu adding the fake blood onto the knife before wiping it off. -Casey's comment about Nightmare on Elm Street about how the first was good, but the rest sucked. It's because Wes Craven only did the first one and didn't direct all of the other ones, lol. -Kenny actually saved Sidney in his literal final moment AFTER his throat got slashed. He pointed to the back and told her "door" so she could crawl out. - Ghostface in the bathroom was a prank on Sidney it wasn't either Billy or Stu. - Rose McGowan(Tatum) was actually able to fit through the cat door. They had to staple her shirt to the door cause she kept falling out. Also, just before her head got smashed in, she herself added, calling out "mom," and Wes loved it and kept it in cause it gave her last moments of humanity. Rose also picked out her own outfits for her character. The jersey she wore with #10 was also a reference to Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street. - When Billy hit Stu in the head with the phone, it was an accident on Skeets part. The fake blood was so sticky and ended up hitting Matthew Lillard instead of the desk, and his "Oww You hit me with the phone D***" he stayed in character and was his real reaction to it. Wes loved it as well, so he kept it, lol. Matthew also improved most of his kitchen scene with his lines, like with "Houston, we have a problem," "the peer pressure, I'm far to sensitive," and the comment about his parents going to be so mad, lol. - That WHOLE kitchen scene took about 2 weeks to film because of the amount of high energy that was used as well with all of the fake blood (corn syrup dyed red). - Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard actually started dating while filming Scream and were together for a little while. So that whole "I've always had a thing for you, Sid" was true, lol. He originally auditioned for Billy, but the casting didn't believe that someone like Sidney/Neve would date someone like him, lol. So he ended up getting Stu, and Skeet got Billy cause of his look alike to Johnny Depp. The funny thing is that even though the casting thought that about Matthew, they ended up dating real life anyway 😂 even though they didn't last that long as a couple they are still close friends. The OG cast are still pretty tight to this day (especially Skeet, Matthew, Neve and Jamie *Randy*) and they do A LOT of different conventions over the years together and still do. - When Billy got stabbed with the umbrella the 2nd time, it actually hit Skeet, where he had heart surgery when he was younger, so that scream he let out was his real action to the pain. - Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. But she ended up changing her mind and she herself went to Wes with an idea to have her as the open kill cause no one would expect it because of how popular she was in the 90's. Also, it would show if they could kill off a huge star right off the bat it would mean NO ONE was safe. It was the BIGGEST surprise shock effect for the audience cause they assumed she would be the leading character and they played into it with the publicity and posters. -Even though Billy was at Sidneys for the attack it was Stu who she fought with. When he was tripping up the stairs you can hear ghostface saying "easy" "easy". The next day at the lockers, he was checking his face in Tatums mirror for any bruises, and when Tatum was hitting him with her sucker he says "easy" "easy. -Billy was always 1 handed with his killing if he had a knife if didn't he resorts to choking except for Tatum he used the opportunity with the garage door. He gave a signal look to Stu at the front door that Tatum was dead. Stu uses both hands when using the knife and resorts to other tactics if he doesn't have a knife like the both times he fought Sidney. -Stu was the one that called Dewey about the abandoned car to get him away from the house for a little bit and also called Randy about the principal after the whole "I'll be right back." Billy killed the principal so they could use him as a deploy for later that night to get the rest of the guests to leave the house so the real party could begin. - Dewey was originally supposed to die in this one, but Wes Craven and everyone just loved David Arquette when they did a screen view test and how he played his character. They all fell in love with him, so Wes went back and they reshot the ending where he had Dewey do the thumbs up to show the audience that he survived.

A few fun facts. Wes Craven, the creator of "Nightmare On Elm Street," had already did a movie that was supposed to be real life imitating a movie, which was "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" where Heather Langenkamp plays both herself and Nancy, the character she played in the original 1984 movie. But he wanted to do a movie about a group of high school kids who loved horror movies and what they would do if their lives were in danger of a killer on the loose, which turned out to be genius before social media would help movies as they do today with people like yourself reacting to them. This movie wound up reviving two things. First, this was Drew Barrymore's comeback that led to her becoming not only an A-list actress again, but her creating her own movie company. It also gave new life to the slasher genre as they had seen a huge decrease in popular and number of movies made as after the box office success lead to Jamie Lee Curtis coming back to the Halloween franchise when she did "Halloween: H20."

The Scream franchise is very much a self-aware homage to the slasher movie genre. By the mid-90's, slasher movies started becoming stale and formulaic because they were rife with overused clichés and tropes that audiences were very much aware of. So in order to bring a fresh take to the genre, Wes Craven (creator of the Nightmare On Elm Street series) wrote and directed Scream, incorporating those well-worn clichés and tropes into the plot. Craven also appears in a cameo as the high school janitor "Fred", dressed in Freddy Kruger's signature fedora and striped sweater.
@MysteriousMrL

Wes Craven didn't write Scream, which is a bit surprising since it's such a natural followup to New Nightmare and how self-referential that was. But the writer of the original Scream along with 2 and 4 was Kevin Williamson. As big a role as Craven played, Williamson is called the creator of the series and I think the most recent ones give him a "characters created by" credit.

Casey and Steve were killed by Stu because Casey dumped him for Steve. It's alluded to during the talk the teenagers have the afternoon after the first killings. They were not part of the overall plan, just something Stu wanted to do since they were coming up on the date their plan needed to be initiated. Plus it caused the town to be on edge, prompting things like the school to close and the curfew (that for some reason unsupervised parties were still allowed to happen) to be declared. Having only watched the RU-vid edit, I don't know if you caught a couple of other meta moments in this film. The principal was played by Henry Winkler, best know for his role as the Fonz in the TV series Happy Days, and Fonzie's leather jacket hangs in the principal's closet. Additionally, when the principal is being stalked and he rushed out into the hall, the janitor he confronts (Fred) is played by director and horror expert Wes Craven, dressed as one of his more famous creations - Freddy Kruger from A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Great reaction Nat. If you do decide to watch Scary Movie, you should watch I Know What You Did Last Summer first. It parodies both that and Scream most heavily. Some Halloween movies that might be up your alley, Love at First Bite, Young Frankenstein, Haunted Honeymoon, and Mars Attacks. They are all very lighthearted. I think you'd enjoy continuing the Scream series. 3 was a little disappointing, but still had fun moments. I enjoy all the rest of them.

I have so been looking forward to you're reaction to this! My history with this movie is interesting. I say it when my dad and his GF rented it from Blockbuster. I was 9 and was BLOWN AWAY with how scary it was. For years I would rent horror movies wanting to find another movie like it but....uck, I didn't like the straight up slasher stuff, even though I thought I should since I liked Scream. It wasn't till much much later when I studied film that I realized Scream had a HEAVY des of parody and humor but blended so great into real scares! Still one of my fav franchises and I have to say, after all six movies I'm still looking forward to 7! What I love most about Scream is that members of my family who don't enjoy horror love the Scream franchise! Gotta love it when your mother calls you up asking why she doesn't have Scream and is wanting to do a marathon.

First time I saw this i was alone in the house and when the phone rang in the movie my house phone rang at the same time so that was kinda freaky..ended up being my friend calling but still it was scary at the time. Drew actually asked to play the role she plays in the beginning because she thought it would be fun to be killed off and she said she had a blast on set as well. They had originally thought she would be the star but that made them have to keep looking until they found Neve of course and the rest is history as they say. I slways knew it was Billy they were focosing on him too much for it not to be and Stu? Well didn't think much about him being the killer but also wasn't that surprised either. Love sydney so much and so glad that Wes Craven decided to direct it because now it's a classic and for good reason. Grate reaction as always Nat and glad you decided to do this one. There are actually 6 movies of this franchise so far though the last two are slightly different than those that came before.

Another comment to note that the original title of this movie was "Scary Movie," but it got changed during production, leaving the title to be inherited by the parody of this movie. Scream is one of my favorite franchises. It spans multiple decades, and provides consistently smart commentary on and plays with the tropes of the evolving slasher genre. Including, at some points in the franchise, on changes to the genre that happened BECAUSE of this franchise. As with any series, some installments are better than others, but each one is entertaining, and none are truly bad IMO.

Ah, love this movie! Loved your reaction; you get so worked up watching it! Glad you enjoyed it!! :) It was a really big deal that Drew Barrymore got killed in the opening sequence. She was a very big name and everyone assumed she'd by the "sole survivor" for the movie, but then she died and we were like uh, what? LOL. That was Drew's idea. She didn't want to play the heroine. She thought everyone would assume she'd make it to the end, and she wanted to play one of the victims instead, so that's why she dies in the opening of the movie. It was wild at the time. X) Courteney Cox and David Arquette (Dewey) met filming this movie, fell in love, and got married. They had a daughter together and divorced several years later. Hard to believe their kid is 18 this year! How time flies. I can understand your confusion. This movie is a parody of classic horror movies, but it was so well done (and as you can see, it's pretty intense and serious a lot of the time) that they went on to make several more movies and it became its own franchise. So then someone decided to parody this movie (and several others), and that one's called Scary Movie. Aside from this movie, it also parodies I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, The Matrix, The Blair Witch Project and Dawson's Creek (this is a TV show). So you should really check out those other movies before watching Scary Movie if you want to get all the jokes. I think it's pretty easy to tell the joke from Dawson Creek is Dawson is a sensitive young man. Can't really remember any other jokes from it, aside from one of the girls in Scary Movie looks a lot like Katie Holmes (who played Joey on Dawson's Creek). I can't remember which horror movies Scream parodies other than the Halloween movies, Psycho, Friday the 13th, and other slasher movies in this same vein. I think if you just watch Halloween 2, Psycho, and Friday the 13th before continuing to Scream 2 you'll know enough to get all the parallels. It's hard for me because I grew up watching horror movies and had seen them all before Scream ever came out, so I got all the references and haven't seen these movies in years, so have forgotten what the references even were. Lol. Thanks for the fun time! This movie is always fun to revisit. :)

Rest in peace, Wes Craven. He made two of the most iconic horror series, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. This is such a smart movie, and Randy is my favorite character. Matthew Lilliard is another highlight who has some of the best lines, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who wants to argue that Neve Campbell is the best final girl in any slasher movie. You could actually tell that Billy was the killer because he was trying to have sex with Sidney so he could justify killing her. Stue was the curveball nobody ever expects because people became eo accustomed to thinking of the movie killers bekng a solo act as an assumed rule. One of my favorite horror films, and although I haven't seen the two newest ones from recent years (wbich I hear aren't that great tbh), 2 and 4 are also just as excellent as the original, which is a lot more than most horror series can say for themselves.

Something to remember is that when this came out the slasher genre was pretty stale. The tropes were so engrained that it made a lot movies predictable and therefore they weren’t really scary. This movies takes the tropes that was the horror recipe of the time, points and laughs at them, and then flips them on their head. Everyone is so engrained to ignore the obvious hints that the movie is giving because every horror movie does the red herring killer to make you think it’s them so you’re surprised when the real killer is revealed. This movie gave you all the same hints even though they actually were the killers because it knew you’d dismiss them outright for being too obvious. It even hints at the two killer reveal by making the killer do impossible things like getting from one location to another way too quickly even though we’re shown the only feasible route he could’ve taken to move that fast. It’s so good because it’s self aware. It does what isn’t obvious by doing exactly what other horror movies do, only to reveal that they actually were really being that obvious about it this time. It’s a classic.
