This rant is special and feels different because the power dynamic between Cox and JD are so different from the beginning of the show. Like, in the past Cox would use it to scare JD and it would work, but both are in entirely different positions now so it kinda both feels like they’re peers and know each other and Cox is using the rant to deflect from the problem and JD is just patronizing him.
He literally just laid out the pharmaceutical "forever-customer" plan. By offering cheap slightly addictive "fixes" until your body gets used to them and they no longer are as effective, that's when they start offering the primo-drugs that cost way more and are way more addictive just to make sure you stay hooked.
Real talk: Budget is the most critical part of quality service in the hospital. Cox always knew this, but he still had to fight for the patients' best interests when he was just a doctor. But how that he's the Chief, he has to deal with all the craps that Kelso was labeled evil for.
@@chrismath149 Ever been to Germany? Spain? I don't know about France, but I know from those countries that got a massive medical bill for using the medical service.
@@michaelsong5555 "all Germans and legal residents of Germany are entitled to free “medically necessary” public healthcare". In Spain, "Healthcare is free for pensioners (over 65) and for those who pay into the Spanish social security system".
@@Chris-im3ys If that's the case, then why are those countries having such hard time containing Corona? The main reason US is having such hard time with it is because the medical bill discourages people to seek medical help until too late (which ends up spreading the disease a lot).
But Kelso took leisurely vacations on the company dime. There is a difference between saying you don’t have money because of constraints out of your control, and being as self-serving as possible
@@NotShowingOff Kelso may have said he took vacations but as he said to Dick Van Dyke he most likely was in some run down repurposed high school gym going to conferences to keep up. Sure pharmaceutical companies gave him free trips to the carribean to shill their pills but I doubt it came out of the hospital funds. We may never know, that portrait of himself may have been paid by himself but I think more often then note Kelso put the hospital first.
One of my favourite rants done by dr cox, hard to choose the actual favourite since they’re all great but still this has to rank somewhere near the top for me, to me cox is the best character hands down
would have loved it if JD had progressed to the point of maturity to be able to snap back at this point, like "Or... we could deduct a cut of your wages for all the time spent on your mesmerising tangents and put THAT towards a new nurse!... or twelve...."
Maybe if drug companies, and insurance companies, and hospitals stopped price gouging each other for their mutual shareholders' benefits at the expense of everybody else (workers/customers/society), maybe they could use some of the saved money for some business investments. Invest more in that human capital, mayhap.
One of my favorite rants in the series. It's not the funniest, but it's the best acted, due to how subtly it portrays how, despite the assurance to the audience that the best running gag wasn't going anywhere, the dynamic was still forever changed. JD looks positively BORED by this, you get the feelng that he really thought shit would he different, that Cox would talk to him like - if not an equal - at least like a professional. But Cox TRIED telling JD at the beginning of the scene that they didn't have the money. You can tell he WANTS to hire new nurses, that he knows Carla is right, but they simply. Can. Not. Do it. And when JD doesn't budge, Cox goes to the rant as if to go "fine if you won't back off then I'll talk to you like you're still the greenhorn brat from almost a decade ago." Fascinating acting and character work wrapped up in a hilarious rant
