Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) reads an excerpt from one of John Doe's many notebooks. Memorable scene from David Fincher’s Se7en (1995).

The only part of the movie where we get a feel of how a serial killer thinks. Sure, the scene in the car towards the end had dialogue, but this in my opinion was what showed me what John Doe really was like. Brilliant.

I actually wrote Freeman's monologue from the journal reading in my own school journal way way back in my day just after this came out. I got sent to the principal's office and they had the guidance counselor attempt to do an evaluation on me. They had no idea it was simply an excerpt from an incredible film.....and I couldn't stop laughing.

Thing I love about this movie is you never see anything, you only see or hear the aftermath, all the murders John commits you don't see apart from Johns own death, even this scene leaves it to your imagination his little meeting on the subway with this stranger, nothing is creepier than your own imagination and this is why this film is so horrifying, absolute classic, this one encounter of meeting this guy on the subway gives ya a glimpse of how warped John is, always in my top 3 films of all time.

As i recall: reception of this movie was mixed. I seem to recall alot of critics giving it side eye because they thought it was trying to ride The Silence of the Lambs' coat tails. Others thought it was trying too hard to be dark and edgy. And some hated the depressing, bleak ending. @@AstonishingSodApe exactly!!! His psyche would be a movie in itself, which by the way would be awesome to have a prequel and see John Doe picking his victims out, see his world from his point of view. Get an inside look into his life and see not only how he thinks, but how he lives, how he is in day to day activities, his interactions with people, and lastly see him writing the notebooks. Also would be interesting to see what lead him to commit these crimes, is he a deeply religious person? Did his mother or father instill this into him as a child? Just so many questions that a prequel could answer. This has always, ALWAYS, been my favorite part just because it shows us a glance into his life and just how demented and narcissistic he is.

It's interesting how different people make different interpretations of the same material. I interpret John Doe's writing here and in fact his entire effort portrayed in the film, as a realistic attempt by the writer to present the serious idea that what John Doe thinks about humanity is actually true. An appropriate conclusion about the lives of humans. "Humans really are - insert John Doe's thoughts here". John Doe has realised that we just fool ourselves that our lives are other.
