So in this Audio Xperts Live video , we will take a look at the output differences between sealed and ported subwoofer enclosures. The Sealed vs Ported debate is almost as serious and Ford Vs Chevy, let's find out what the meter says. Then lets take it for a test drive and see if the increased output sounds better on the road. For more information stop by www.audio-xperts.com. Also make sure to subscribe for more myth busting comparisons in the car audio world.

"Look, a speaker in the wrong enclosure sounds bad, in the right enclosure sound better." This isn't ported vs sealed, it's the right box for a driver vs the wrong one.

i had a 15" sub in a sealed box once and switched it to a similar size ported box and the difference was night and day. way louder being ported. that sub was designed for both boxes but sounded best being ported.

I agree with oyobass, a subwoofer near the floor will perform better than one mid way up the wall. Just like a sub in a corner works twice as good as one against a flat wall. You need to test them at the same hight.

Keep in mind, which I'm sure you know, Sealed enclosures tend to have must tighter bass. Ported enclosures tend to be more sloppy. The sealed I believe, is nicer sounding and work well if your interested in sound quality ~ RTA reading.

TSBGLtd all true though i understand the use of damping in a sealed box (usually poly fiberfill @1lb per cu. ft)is to present more virtual volume for the driver by displacing the air and making it more compressible. This has a side effect of excursion control. Also supposedly controls high frequency distortion created by the box it self. Myself I always liked sealed boxes. easier to tune and sound good with a variety of music.

Reminds me of going into a shops sub room back in the day and them selling one sub on the wall way harder than the rest... "Listen to how much better this one sounds"... but tucked away in a stack of loaded sub boxes in the corner that were "just being stored" was one very high end sub that only thumped when they selected that "totally awesome" speaker on the wall. Such a shiesty thing to do.

@johnwanamaker358
@johnwanamaker358 8 лет назад
no disrespect, but this video is misleading. the goal for a successful subwoofer install should be: how does it sound?, not how loud does it get. to compare two different drivers in two different enclosures and expect to get some comparison is not fair and is misleading. both types of enclosures have their good points and bad points. sealed enclosures are amazing when used with a sub that is designed for sealed only. a ported enclosure is amazing when tuned PROPERLY. too many variables in this equation, to compare the two with an SPL meter means nothing.

+nmarcano3 what is implied and what is a reality are 2 different things. even still, in the most critical comparison (same driver, same amp, same source ) the use of a SPL meter still makes no sense. of course everyone knows a ported box will be louder than a sealed box in a ideal comparison. But is that what we, as a consumer or a sound engineer should be striving for??? if that was the case, then we all should be driving around with Lanzar 18"'s in a universal bandpass box.
@imdbtruth
@imdbtruth 2 года назад
I had a prefab bandpass box back in the 90's that would create a crazy amount of bass for two 10's, but it was sloppy af. I switched to a sealed enclosure with better amps and subs, it got about as loud, and the sound quality was way way better. But all the enclosures have their place, and it's just largely based on preference.

I've been recently testing out various subs and box and amps. I've found a decent amp wired to a correctly matched subwoofer is about 50% of the volume, and you get about 50% from the wooden box their mounted on and in. I've seen very impressive sound and volume from a small sealed box with just a jbl gt4 12" (250Wrms) mounted, and a T-rex 10"(1000Wrms) mounted in a tiny box barely able to rattle mirrors when I know those T-rex speakers if in a large box can break windows. I now after trial and a few errors am running twin inphase subs in a massive ported box run off a 2400W juice mono block amp. The combination is impressive and was quite cheap compared to alternatives to get same volume and quality.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but considering the wavelength of the bass at the frequencies specified, could the distance between the drivers and the mic not be at least partially responsible? Could the first sub not be closer to a wave node than the other?

Type of music you like is also something to consider. Music with lower bass like hip hop, dubstep, or anything really bass driven go ported. Rock and classic styles of music with tight, punchier kicks that wont be playing out long bass lines can sound just fine with a sealed box.
@LionWithTheLamb
@LionWithTheLamb 6 лет назад
+Luke Connell That all depends on the port tuning. If you get a prefabbed box that is ported too high or is too small it may be loud in the upper bass range but seriously fall off under that. I will agree with your statement as long as the box is tuned low enough. I run a bit larger than spec sealed box for lower bass extension (at the cost of volume), but if I had the room in my vehicle I'd have a huge ported box tuned to around 32Hz

So many car audio experts in the comments section. In principal, this guy is right except he went about it the wrong way. If u take a sub that is designed for use in both sealed and ported enclosures, it will reach higher SPL in the ported enclosure. There are trade offs like everything else in this life. His explanation was exaggerated but true in cases like the one I stated.
@ICP1SBJ
@ICP1SBJ 5 лет назад
he was wrong because he used a small $50 sealed basic box and put it up against a ported box that was designed for that sub. Had he used a slightly larger sealed box that was designed for that sub the 2 would've been closer.

Acoustic suspension woofer enclosures will always be less effecient than ported designs using the same driver. This is why drivers optimized for AS enclosures must be long throw with high power handling capacity, very.high compliance and very low Fs and low Vas. The design when optimized will give much flatter frequency response to a much lower frequency, lower harmonic distortion, and is equalizable with a linear 12 db per octave falloff below system F3 than ported designs. In fact there is no comparison. All woofer/ enclosure systems can be analyzed using Newton's second law of motion applied to forced oscillation. In a ported design damping factor b and restoring force k are strong functions of frequency resulting in a high Q and turbulence at the port's end can result in chuffing noise. In an an acoustic suspension design they are independent of frequency. Also the restoring force of an AS design is applied uniformly over the surface of the cone eliminating differential radial and circumferential force differences that create shearing and twisting forces that break up cones into harmonic distortion modes. Not all sealed designs are AS designs and not all AS designs have been correctly optimized. When they are they are the best design for high fidelity.

I turned my ported box to sealed by stuffing the hole with old clothes and I set my LPF at 250hz hoping it would change it to a bit more punching/ accurate sub. And it kinda did! I needed to adjust the gain pretty high to get the same output that the ported version and now I'm just worried that it will overheat.

I prefer big subs.12" plus. in a sealed enclosure. back in the 90's I had 2 kicker comp 15's with 200watts at most on a good day. it would do 142.5 on music. in a camaro. it was only getting about 11volts to the cheap amp. wit the stock alt. under load. on long deep bass it was probably dropped lower. so it was probably about 125-150 watts each. in a sealed enclosure. but most of all it sounded good. for a cheap amp. you don't always have to have the best to have sound quality

Or, do yourself a favour, and "deliberately BOLT two speakers face to face, (with just enough of a spacer sandwiched between them, to separate the diaphragms apart, to stop them rubbing against each other, as they move TOGETHER in either direction), making absolutely certain to reverse wire one across to the other (in series) as that way, the signal current FLOWS through one's voice coil, pulling it IN, whilst simultaneously flowing via the reverse terminal connection (of the other), which allows the same current to "push" one speaker's diaphragm OUT, with the other pushing IN equally as hard, to then pull each other the other way, (thus avoiding EITHER speaker from completely bottoming out, or extending beyond the magnet's core material when at their maximum extensions, driven hard). Result.? NO actual compression of air, being able to occur DIRECTLY between either speaker, but BOTH act as if ONE SINGLE DIAPHRAM, which can thus simply be mounted in a free standing (single) sheet of particle board placed ANYWHERE - even in the middle of the room, such that the backs of BOTH speakers, send the complete sound wave, away from each of them in turn, as the COMBINED dual diaphragm pulsates equally hard - in BOTH directions as the sound is played. Then and only then will a PORTED versus an UNPORTED system be truly comparable. Why ? Because either works just as fine as the other (same SPL levels with both systems) - as it's then NOT about the speaker's ability to DRIVE in just one direction only, but in both in & out directions, ported or otherwise.
@OBARRVAGOS

This is a lot of misinformation for one video. Where do i even start? Let's take our cheapest "entry" sub and try to push it in an enclosed box. You had my eyes rolling already. Then sealed tiny box vs large ported box? Double eye roll before you even started the "comparison". Basic physics should tell you a flimsy sub is going to encounter mechanical failure faster when its fighting the enclosure, in addition, fighting that enclosure of course is going to reduce output. If you're just trying to sell cheap subs to kids that only listen to rap then this is for you. If you actually care about sound QUALITY and having a flat output along many frequencies over pure SPL you need a higher quality sub with more power. Put some metal or heaven forbid some classical through that ported box and you'll be treated to a bass resonating shit pie. Take that bigger box, seal it, add 150 watts, (cmon,amps are cheap these days) swap to a more rigid sub, and you'll enjoy much cleaner, tighter, and deeper bass response. Sure ports are great for pure SPL but i also want to listen to all my music, not just a narrow frequency I can annoy neighbors with.

@quixkiwi5337 7 лет назад
Bolt two IDENTICAL speakers, "face to face" (with a minimal anti-touching diaphragm/spacer sandwiched between them), AND also deliberately "reverse wire them" (in series with each other), to create a SINGLE ACTING push/pull diaphragm where each diaphragm works with each other, in either direction, so that you then have one that is ALWAYS sealed, whilst the other is always unsealed, (fitted into whatever sized "sealed" enclosure you want them placed inside, or simply don't have any enclosure at all, and thus put them either side of a single piece of particle board, which can even be free standing "somewhere" - away from other surfaces.That way, you will have a dual acting in/out diaphragm action, whereby neither speaker bottoms out, without the other drawn out of it's magnet core's slot. Basically meaning that neither will effectively bottom out at all, no matter how hard it's driven (until the voice coils pull completely OUT of the core magnet's slots, thus distorting & destroying the speaker voice coils, that won't then fit BACK into those slots). p.s. Then any amp will do the trick, (as even a truly cheap-as 300w sounds great) with a push/pull system - unlike a single speaker driven in & out, on it's own.

What's the first thing they say when I ask if the speakers they have are any good? "Yeah, they get real loud!" For non audiophiles loudness is the number 1 attribute of a speaker.

There are sealed boxes, there are ported boxes and then there are chambered and ported boxes. The chambered and ported boxes are superior because it's basically a box within a box and the internal walls of the box are designed to help produce ultimate sound, acoustics if you will. The technician in this video didn't mention any brand names, but Im pretty sure these subs are generic. Go to MTX or Kicker sites and find out quick who is top shelf. Expect to pay $600 for two good 12 inch subs and enclose.

When properly built, no box is "better". You chose a box based on what you want from it. All box designs have compromises and advantages. No box is better, just different.

Ok, first off, what is the subs specs? Is it low or high Qts? Does it have a stiff of soft spider? Secondly, a correctly designed sealed enclosure can and will extend a flatter frequency response to a lower frequency if designed that way. A ported enclosure always has a spike in the frequency response at some given frequency, generally at wherever your port was designed to produce the most output at. Doesn't it depend also on the car the enclosure is going into? Most people are looking for boom type bass output, not clean output for the audiophile types. So, wouldn't it depend on what the owner was going to listen to and what system they owned? Just some questions to think about when claiming one type is "better" than another. Music is entirely subjective in what is better. Great demonstration video though. Keep the great work up.

If a subwoofer is making mechanical noise it's being clipped at the amplifier or headunit or has been blown. Setting the amplifier gain properly plays the biggest key when sealed and ported. Next is the enclosure and air space of the enclosure. Along with clean power feeding the amplifier.

You cannot get an accurate difference measurement unless you play the *same portion* of the track through both speakers, and note the max and min meter readings for that portion. You may also need to repeat each one several times, so you can take an average of the multiple readings, as the timing of the meter samples isn't synchronized to the music. Also, this method tells you nothing about what is happening to the frequency response.

I will take a sealed box over a ported box any day of the week sealed boxes play deeper and lower bass and typically play all bass well a ported box has to be tune to be as low as a sealed box and even when it is it typically only plays good around the frequency it's tuned at the only upside to a ported box is it's louder but I couldn't care less about being loud I just want to sound the best

+ Alex Alvarez They laugh most likely because they are probably used to seeing the same old cheaply made bandpass from pyle, pyramid, etc. I had a MTX TB12 Bandpass (single 12" 200w) on a 150w rms amp back in the day and it would flex the roof of the car, and shake the mirrors as well. I've seen Dual ( I don't mean the brand) 12" Cheap Bandpass and it just sounded like loud mid bass resonance and port chuffing.

Not all woofers work in ported and some don't work closed, so the thiele-small parameters have to be consulted to optimize. Let's say the qts is 0,3 or lower, you would need an incredibly low fs to ever get bass out of a sealed box, and on the other hand, if you bring that qts to 0,7 on the driver and make a ported box would get a nasty decay (muddy bass). If a woofer is somewhat in the middle and both enclosures are an option, you are generally looking at a 3dB gain for the ported compared to sealed, because you are utilizing both sides of the membrane, that's if both enclosures are optimized to have a smooth response with a nice gradual roll-off.

Accuracy, yes. Problem in have with ported enclosures is that they fall flat on the lows especially 30hz and below unless you have a custom built one tuned at a lower frequency. But they are quite loid and boomy at 45hz. I once bought the kicker CompR dual 12 box from best buy and lows were virtually non existent 30hz and below. You could hear them bottoming out but that was it, yet my one old school CVR 12 in a sealed enclosure put out way more low frequency bass, shook the heck out of my seat. Didn't have much higher frequency output like the ported setup did but killed that kicker loaded box with the 2 CompR 12's. If you have a ported enclosure tuned at a low enough frequency it can slam lows at 20-25hz but sound quality and accuracy go out the window. With a sealed enclosure if you want more lows around 20-30hz you can achieve that by going with a larger enclosure assuming the subs are the same for comparison purposes. Also cheap subs won't hit the lows regardless because of physical limitations like excursion. Cheap ones don't have near the excursion as a good one. And to hit those super low bass notes you need that excursion.

I am a sealed guy by nature (and want the ported girl @Saigon_Baby) and enjoy good sound quality. If your in an open space like an SUV/Truck go sealed. If you have a sedan and the sub is in the trunk -you can go ported to get more efficiency. The key is building the box to spec and tuning the box to lower 30s if you want good quality -rather using a pre-fab box which will never sound as good (seems this video he has prefab boxes tuned to mid 40s for higher output boomy).

Efficiency is determined by driver alone period. A ported box only affects bandwidth or possible peaking effects, or one note bass, misalignment. Drivers made for sealed box have higher Q and less efficiency. Low q drivers need ports to compensate for excessive bass rolloff. There about an infinate number of tunning possibilities with ported.

Hi I have two 30-watt 6.5-inch subwoofers that correspond to the old edifier r401 speaker. I want to design a common subbox for both and then build, So that it produces maximum volume and volume, as well as deep bass and sufficient vibration (the best and most optimal mode). However, the space limit for this subbox should also be considered, which can be up to 35-40 cm wide, up to 50-60 cm long and up to 70 cm high. In the speaker specifications, the minimum response frequency of the 32 Hz speaker is written, which is probably mentioned with its box. Please suggest a schematic for the design that is more appropriate Thank you

That's so true: Ari Reid A 300watt amp can produce in excess of 126db, (whilst running at LESS than half it's rated output power), when a few simple rules are applied. BALANCING the Amps output reactance, to the implied reactance of the connected speaker LOAD, is what transmits the highest level of sound. Not the enclosure, or how MUCH current one can force through the voice coils' winding.

Quix Kiwi Could you please elaborate on this some more
@quixkiwi5337
@quixkiwi5337 7 лет назад
Yes I could, but would you actually "understand my answer" ? Oh who cares if you can or you can't. Here's what I will state. THE OBVIOUS. As the operative word I used before - was: BALANCING As THAT is all you really need to understand what was said.? Don't consider this to be a useless method of "automatically leveling" the resultant power output levels of TWO speaker channels (in a bog standard 2ch stereo setup) as that NEVER balances anything, except the perceived listening "line" between two speaker positions to thus be causing the (resultant) "summated" MONO to then "appear" as if at a point ? About midway between these TWO speaker positions. . Balancing is actually something done in reference to the "making of the same" with regards to what the Amplifier see's as a load , as against what the speakers see as a "driving" supply source" Two speakers will NEVER provide a balanced impedance network, for any two channel "stereo" amplifier (Where stereo means MORE than one, which by definition ALSO refers to there being actually - MORE than two, rather than JUST two speakers). As to correctly BALANCE the output of even a "cheap as" (low powered) stereo amp? Be that a TWO CHANNEL AMP - or the most expensive multiple channel digital amp model available ? (which is "able" to supply any number of speakers, within the impedance "ratio" range, that the amp's output's can handle) Thus to understand BALANCING ? One must in the first instance UNDERSTAND what you intend to balance. If it's just a single listener's (own) headphone's LEVEL of loudness, in comparison to the output power setting, (of the OTHER headphone in that pair of headphones)? Then all you need to do - is "position the perceived" center=summation positioning, (not a real.central mono) to exist somewhere halfway between the other TWO speakers. If however you wish to CORRECTLY balance the output "loading impedances" Direct to what the ANP can successfully drive OUT to the speakers connected. (without undue clipping, heating or other weird sounding distortions) YOU WILL NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE MUSIC WAS ORIGINALLY RECORDED, (by even as few as ? JUST TWO MICROPHONES.). When the "sound area" was created across, (to even be recorded for YOU to "play-back") And thus to be "heard back later" as if YOU are still being, ? Within a generally considered OPEN dispersal area, of a THREE dimensional "horizontal plane" of sound. AS WELL AS HAVING (at least) TWO OTHER THREE DIMENSIONAL "PLANES" OF GEOMETRY Comprising "not" just a WALK-BETWEEN line of sight/sound between TWO speakers.? But "across, around, up/down/over inside-out &/or otherwise" sound planes (firing sound OUT in multiple directions as if being a LIVING PART, of whatever actions are being done) As the inclusion of trillions of perceived generated beam pattern's are what makes this special, in the way it does now also ACTUALLY EXIST AS, in open space around as many speakers as you wish to include "And thus (again) working environment areas, to be creatively positioning's thereof, (all sound contained in just such an outdoor event) to thus be recreating sound between NOT JUST TWO, but as many "all_around"©™ speakers as YOU wish to include, in your "surrounding" sound replay/recreation system. To ensure correct SPACIAL (3D, 4D and 6 - 9+ channels) listening pleasures too. Whereby that is what is actively obtained, to thus be what drives UP the standing waves, to force the radiated waves to "appear" as if all louder, (as if it's the correct - high powered amp's output), to thus "arrive" at what would APPEAR, as a total surround effect, when in fact, it MAY WELL BE, just a silly wee recorder/player's "recorded sounds" - of the artist "painter".? ONLY THEN will a thought hit you (inside your brain),? Such as to why all of that "is this", And thus (?) WHY does it sound "better" and also EXTREMELY LOUDER - than what you initially "showed" here as if it has "very loud sounds". See ? Did you understand ANY of that profound statement ?
@2869may
@2869may 7 лет назад
Quix Kiwi First of all, I was not being cynical at all. while I do appreciate your response, You were correct in the fact that I understood little of what you said, some but not much. I do appreciate quality sound over total loudness and was hoping you would try to explain how to achieve a better balance in simpler terms, if that's possible.. it may just be beyond my level of understanding, But I thank you for taking the time to try to explain. Perhaps you might know of a link that could explain in a simplified manor so I could attain some knowledge of achieving a better balance. Thank you.
@quixkiwi5337
@quixkiwi5337 7 лет назад
Sorry about the abruptness before. Yes, but it would be far better for your understanding, if I just tell you (and everyone else interested in this subject) to "contact" your local electricity supplier, to ask THEM to explain all about load shedding, load balancing, power factor control and distribution network control systems, of ANY 2 phased & 3 phased power supply systems (which effectively are ALL that a 2ch stereo audio systems are anyway) to decrease the AMOUNT OF SUPPLY POWER NEEDED, to force "usable wattage" (output power) into an unbalanced consumers premises.!!!As an unbalanced (incorrectly loaded) consumer's premises, will actually WASTE almost all available POWER (wattage) from the supply generation point, just to create an ineffective "minimal wattage (power) seen at the load itself.Hence those who KNOW "all about" how costly it is to be paying huge dollar figures, for expensive HIGH POWER amplifiers, also know diddly squat, about WHY their uselessly low powered speakers, are sucking all that power from their expensive HIGH POWER amps, without creating any "really efficient" sound VOLUME.? As volume in a 2 dimensional (or even a 3 dimensional) sound field is an "incorrect term." THERE IS NO VOLUMETRIC CONTENT in two dimensions - only LOUDNESS. Loudness isn't a good user of wattage (power), as LOUDNESS just wastes power. In fact a small increase in loudness requires an extremely massive waste, of the available "supply wattage" (from the amplifier itself), to gain maybe 1/2 a dB increase in loudness at the two speakers. .... to be continued below (re: Now... )
