I don't know if McCarthy appeared in any other sketches on this show, but if she didn't, that may explain how she was able to memorise her script. The SNL schedule is so tight that sketches continue to be rewritten right up until 11:30 on Saturday night. Consequently, performers - especially those in multiple sketches - don't have a chance to memorise their lines. The reason Bill Hader used to always break-up as Stefon (which he covered with his trademark hands-over-the-face) was because he was often seeing the jokes on the cue cards for the first time live on the show.

Too bad it sucked.

SNL test the shows every Saturday. They have a live audience in the afternoon. They run through the show and based on the responses when they select what they will do that evening. The audience is prompted to cheer for the musical guest when they come on, but during the sketches, they don't. I have been at SNL and I have also gone to Trevor Noah tapings. On TN they ask you to cheer for the guest (usually they are cerebral guest that only geeks would cheer for) but if the host or skits are not funny then it will be a flat joke, with a bad response​.
