Halo lore fans, what is up and welcome back! Today’s video is a very special project to me, and honestly something I’ve been dying to do ever since the first chapter of Halo: Rubicon Protocol was teased back in July: and that is map out every location in the book with where it corresponds to in the game. When 343 released the July preview I was able to accurately locate Spartan Stone’s crashed lifeboat and from that moment on, I was hooked. Now that the entire book has been released, I went on a quest to explore Zeta Halo and find every location the characters travel to. As a warning, this will be longer than my typical lineup, but very worth it if you ask me. So, without further ado, let’s get right into it.

I was skeptical about actual locations seen in-game, but seeing those tattered boots that might have belonged to Murphy and the craters from the boat crews ambush of the methane tents made me smile.

@@haloguyFor me, this book was a unique experience because of the relevance to infinites campaign. The fact players can find locations that line up pretty accurately with what's depicted in the book, and videos like yours to showcase that really made both the book and game a lot more impactful. I'm left really curious about Kovan, Horvath and the other survivors fate now. I wonder if we'll find out in dlc or another book. What do you think?

@@crimson829 yeah I’m conflicted on this. My first response is I’ve rarely seen book characters make their way into mainline games, but in this case, they existed in the game first, so it is highly likely we’ll see them appear in game at some point. Especially since the book ends literally days before the Chief gets there, meaning that Chief and the boat crew are walking around the ring fragments at the same time. That’ll blow your mind for sure

@@haloguy There's cut audio logs of both Horvath and Kovan's death so I'm thinking for sure we'll see them again. I also found out Murphy is the pelican/phantom pilot in a bunch of the Halo 4 spartan ops, I've been replaying those with a friend so that totally did blow my mind. Also on a side note, the image in my head of Horvath walking around snowy mountains with a camo net cape wielding an energy sword and Jackal shield is an awesome one. What a badass cutscene that would be of him and chief meeting.

The fact that the Tower was still operational and Griffin still prisoner, make me think that Kovan and the Boat Crew (and Vettel) died sometime before Chief's return.

Regarding Kovan, I think the date the book ends is close enough to Chief's awakening that they spent a few days recovering and planning how to rescue Browning before setting out to do it - especially if their absence in game is explained by being on one of the fragments in the distance - during which time, The Tower mission could take place. Spartan Vettel on the other hand almost certainly died trying to liberate Griffin (which happens in a cut audio log, but since Kovan and Horvath had logs cut for this book, I'm not sure if we can consider Vettel's cut logs canon)... or best case scenario, he got captured and put in the Tower or shipped off to the arenas in the House of Reckoning.

They had half month to attack the Tower, so I tend to agree with OP that either the boat crew give up or, more probable, something went terrible wrong. Maybe Kovan's death in the cut audio log did happen after all, and Jega killed her.

I finally finished the book and had been waiting to watch this video since I saw the Lucas Browning video. This is an awesome analysis of both the game and book and I think you did a great job in finding the locations of many points of interest. I no longer have access to a Xbox, but I had played through the infinite campaign before I lost it, so this video was the only way for me to really compare the two forms of media. Great work Halo Guy! Kelly Gay made a really interesting novel, one I’ve seen compared to *The Flood* by William C. Dietz, but I feel Rubicon Protocol was definitely the better adaptation. I’m glad 343 worked alongside her in adding the details you showcased in this video, all other controversy aside, this was a nice little win for us Lore fans. Looking forward to your next video 🍻

@@haloguy These videos are great man, love the way you interact with your audience, you got big numbers headed your way soon for sure. But yeah I loved the perspective shift from recent Halo novels to focus on smaller characters and aspects of the Universe, like support crew and retail staff. Felt refreshing to be following characters with no ‘grand design’ or much purpose other than survive. It was also surprising to have no punches pulled when describing gore and the brutality of halo combat. Really drove home the stakes of what they went through. I never had any issue’s with the idea of Spartan IV’s, but comparing how they were represented in say, *Spartan Assault* (I didn’t mind that tbh) versus *The Rubicon Protocol* , I have newfound respect for them. Kovan, Stone and Horvath are absolute badasses, and Kelly Gay definitely knows how to write Spartans into combat. I also hope we see more of her writing in the future. Now I’m just hungry for more! I need more story cause both the game and novel ended on cliffhangers I desperately hope we see resolved. What do you think is included in the upcoming “narrative dlc” that was mentioned on roadmap? Also are you gonna revisit the Rubicon Protocol again in any videos soon?

@@oldajtap1361 one of the best things this book did was make the Spartan 4’s feel much more grounded. They weren’t “super heroes” like they are often portrayed, and the normal support crew without any combat experience was a breath of fresh air for sure. But to answer your last question, I got about 10 or so upcoming video ideas on just the rubicon protocol

This is so cool, the fact that all these locations from the book are actually in-game is beautiful. Albeit the final beacon tower, which is 99% the same one from the book. Always found that beacon tower interesting in the game as it serves no real purpose minus I think an audio log location. Same goes with many more forerunner locations in the game that don't really mean anything besides looking pretty, I.e. the big circle on the north island and the semi-circle thing sticking out the mountain nearby. Same goes with the most northern island above the Mortal Reverie not having that much on it, HVT, Skull and a plushie. Hopefully these get expanded upon in future updates and storytelling. Also hoping Halo confirms this route or the finales location 👀

Awesome to see such dedication. Just got and read the book on Christmas and just looking around videos on the book I found this. I mean there's the occasional moment where I wondered how accurate it is. But there's just a great level of easter eggs. I mean the boots, craters, and the wild Kovan armor coating itself. Also, I doubt there's actually a single easter egg due to the minimal acknowledgment of the character, but I was wondering if you knew about any hints of spartan Berthold Vettel. The book or the audio logs indicate that he went looking for Griffin and even goes as far as to say that Vettel is presumed dead (I forget which one, it could've even been the halo encyclopedia). It doesn't guarantee this though, and I just wondered if there was a single hint as to what happened to him.

One more thing, do you have any idea who Browning's cellmate is? I presume it was Griffin because of how Chak Lok took an interest, and although the character states that he didn't know reverie collapsed, he also tried to keep his identity secret by refusing to admit his name, so he could've been lying. Two more things now, I just thought about it and was wondering if, by the fact that the spirit of fire is in open space, and could be closer to the ring, they could be the ones that would receive the message the soonest. just wondering about your thoughts on both of those theories.

Glad it could be of use to you as you read the book. to your first question, the last we knew of Vettel is that he was out looking for griffin, and since the game and encyclopedia leave his fate as currently unknown, I’d like to imagine he’s alive. If not, I think they would have said so. He did go out looking for griffin but we can assume he never found him. And speaking of griffin, he could be the one that was in the prison with browning. He was my first guess, just because I think it would be cool to have such a noble Spartan like him do all he could to keep browning optimistic. If browning knew a Spartan was next to him, it would have made him feel pretty depressed. Others speculate that the prisoner was Captain Lasky, but I don’t think so. Lasky gave rendezvous coordinates for Infinity’s crew and I’d imagine he would be there with the rest of them. Your last theory on spirit of fire, it all depends on where cortana took the ring when she did the slip space jump. I don’t know if she would have sent it back to the ark 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was finally able to dig into the Rubicon Protocol and I have to say it is cool how much aligns, but it also bothers me how many areas don't align that well. Biggest for me is the redoubt of sundering. The book goes over the amount of cells, bodies, and the space it would take to house so many prisoners, but the game location is definitely lacking.

Thing to remember about it is that the book was written while the game was still going through so changes. Understanding the writing process and the process of making the game kinda puts it into context for me. Overall, it was really cool to have a book and game so closely together, sort of like Halo: The Flood

Just after reading chapter 20 then going back to the location I had the thought that if I didn't play Infinite first I would have been disappointed. That is my favorite section of the book. I already had feelings that the Infinite campaign has loads of cut content. Sections like Chapter 20 make me realize there's even more that was either cut or never made in the first place. It's bitter-sweet because I like what the campaign currently has. I'm left with a longing for more.

Have you tried to find the crashed FOB that spartan stone talks to spartan kovan about in chapter 24 (9:28 mark if using audible)after they link back up? It’s the area where she and stone see each other’s optic glint, She mentions that spartan sorel and makovich found a crashed fob 40 klicks in the mountains that has a working coms satellite.

The book I will say painted an entirely different view on the game, the overwhelming odds and brutality of the banished pretty much like playing on heroic or even legendary to some of the accounts or like someone turned on the skull multipliers especially at the battle of the reverie. Gives a whole new perspective roaming the map so much untold stories lie in nearly each area

So I have been researching the map referring to that fob and only thing I find near the area the book covers is near jester squad it’s a banished outpost building that’s crashed into the terrain. It’s near a the edge fracture not very mountainous but so far that’s all I’ve found still scouring the landscape

I show two different gorges in that area because there are two different spots that fit where they should be. Horvath is the only one who is teleported and we don’t know where he went. If that didn’t answer your question, let me know

If you're referring to the characters mentioned, I'm not going to spoil anything referring to most of the marines of the boat crew, but spartan Nina Kovan was left alive at the end of the book, & Lucas browning, the combat medic, is essentially broken due to repeated exposure to the harbinger (some weird trauma aura from the Harbinger or something). Spartan Tomas Horvath is also alive at the end of the book. Vettel it doesn't really mention, he just went to look for Griffin, and is presumed dead because of the danger of doing so, but no evidence is in place.
