Seashells Glow Under UV Light | Testing My Shells with an Ultraviolet Torch

Thank you for two amazing years of collecting sea shells!! Today, I found out what my collection looked like under UV (Ultraviolet) light, and I was not disappointed!! WOW!! Only a few species of snails will construct their shell in a way that perfectly combines minerals and/or organic compounds to create fluorescence under black light. I was lucky enough to have gathered (unknowingly) a handful of brilliant examples to show you all today. Thanks for watching something a bit different!

G'day everyone! Wow, you're actually reading the description? Um, thank you! You will be rewarded with extra content... my Facebook page (link above) is loaded with out-takes and deleted scenes that don't make it into the RU-vid videos. Check out the extra funsies over there if you're desperate for more shelling content ;D

Wow Maddie! I love waking up on a Saturday morning and making me a cup of coffee. I get my coffee and set down and watch your video. Love the UV light show. G'day Anita 👋🏻🏖️ Awwww that's wonderful, thank you for letting me be your coffee buddy!! I consider coffee time to be the most precious time 😀! Ohhh yes, I also knew about the brown bubble shells and the Map Cowrie (though seeing it glow SO bright was a bit shocking) but everything else was a total surprise 😁 Thank you so much, I still can't believe how many shelling episodes I've been able to publish in the last two years. Thank you so, so much for watching so many of them 🥰

It's really cool, right?!! I'm glad that I could show you something new today 😁 Thanks for watching 🥰 and I hope you're having a good day!

Happy 2 years shelling anniversary, Maddie!! 🐚🎉 (The world needs more shell emojis!). This was a very cool video. I use a uv flashlight to enjoy the hidden glow of some of my sea glass pieces. They mainly glow green, though a few glow orange, yellow, or pink. You've inspired me to test my shell collection now, too. ✨️

G'day Oceanluvn Gal 👋🏻🌊💖 Thank you so much: it's crazy to think it's been two years already?!! Any yes, I NEED some more shell emojis 🐚! Oh wow, so your sea glass glows too?? I suppose it must look quite nice with the light reflecting through it? Yes, try it out on your shells too; but be aware that very few species seem to glow like this, but bubble shells are a pretty safe bet. Have fun, and thank you so, so much for watching something a bit different this time 🥰

G'day Erin 👋🏻💖 I didn't know that corals glowed under UV light 😲 I mean, that white coral of mine glowed extra white; now that I think about it, a lot of my white shells didn't glow the same white as my coral and our teeth 😁 so it must be something about the composition of them? I hope you find some glowing shells in your collection, I think bubble shells will glow, but it seems like only a few other specific species will glow? You'll have to tell me which ones POP with brilliant light! Oh, those Ram's Horns were surprising, weren't they?!! Thank you so much for watching 🥰 and for being with me over the last two years!

G'day Wanda 👋🏻💖 I'm so glad that you enjoyed seeing the shells under black light. In retrospect, perhaps I shouldn't have shared my first ever reaction to seeing the shells, and perhaps shared a more calm and informative experience...oh well 🤣 I though this suited me?? Awww I'm sorry that there isn't much to find on Lake Huron; I bet is absolutely beautiful there, so that's maybe just as good as finding shells at the beach 😉 The weather must be getting pretty good over there, I hope it's warming up in a good way! Thank you for joining me on the adventures over here, whether they be at home with the shell cabinet, or at the beach like usual 💖🥰

Wow, this is definitely a very cool episode, Maddie👍! This is a very interesting topic for me, now I’ll sit down and take a look. I remember, it seems, the famous German conchologist Felix Lorenz did similar experiments with the glow of shells in ultraviolet light. This is how a new species Leporicypraea rosea ultraviola Lorenz & Bridges, 2014 was born. Lorenz also identified spots of intravital coloration on fossil Barycypraea. Cool release, Maddie!
@SandCoffeeRocks
@SandCoffeeRocks 2 месяца назад
G'day Mikhail👋🏻🏖️ Thank you for taking a look at which of my shells fluoresced!! I knew the brown bubbles and the mappa would light up, but I was very surprised to see the others too 😀 OH!! Wait, so THAT is why Leporicypraea rosea ultraviola is one that I sometimes see on eBay? I was wondering about its subspecies name... I should have understood the name more quickly, oops!! Barycypraea also lights up; huh, I don't have one of those. Do the modern Barycypraea light up, or just old fossilised ones? 😁 I was thinking to find one (a modern one) at the next shell show, but it might be too expensive. We shall see. Anyhoo! Thank you so much for watching this unusual video today 🥰
@mikhail-tikhonov
@mikhail-tikhonov Месяц назад
@@SandCoffeeRocks G'day Maddie 😊👋 Yes, Maddie, this is a great, very interesting episode! About Leporicypraea rosea ultraviola - as far as I understand, it is the only one that should glow in ultraviolet, although I may be wrong. For example, not a single shell from the genus Leporicypraea, including Leporicypraea rosea, glows, although maybe my flashlight is simply defective😂 About Barycypraea - we are talking about fossils; if you shine ultraviolet light on them, lifetime color will appear in the form of spots on the side of the shell, like in modern Barycypraea. If you were nearby and if there weren’t these problems with shipping at the moment, I would calmly give you Barycypraea teulerei, I have several of them and I would like you to have Barycypraea. But let's hope this will be canceled in the future..

G'day Jeff 👋🏻🏖️ I actually do have some fossil sea shells in my cabinet that got a good shining with the UV light 😲 I think it heavily depends on which fossil species you shine. I shined it over a fossil cowries, fossil cone, fossil Lettered Olive, fossil Sharkeye, clam, and an ammonite too, but none of them glowed 🤔 maybe they were too old, of just incapable. I'll have to check any new fossils I get in the future, though! Thanks for watching 🥰

@SandCoffeeRocks Месяц назад
G'day Alison 👋🏻💖 Oh gosh, you're never late, I don't think anyone can ever be late with a comment 😉 My replies are always days behind, though!! As for your question, I'm not actually sure 🤔 some websites said that the live 🐌 shells/snail done fluoresce, but I don't believe that; personally, I think they would! I don't know if the snails themselves would fluoresce, but I think a well-maintained shell of one of these glowable species would definitely glow when it's alive! Not sure if you can get a UV torch underwater for these ones though; not many of these species are rock pool inhabitants (but some are, I suppose!) Yep, nature is just ridiculously amazing 🤩 there is always more to learn and discover. Thanks for watching 🥰
