We are at quarters of Seattle Fire Department Engine 10, Ladder 1, Aid 5, Aid 10, and the Hazmat company at 400 South Washington Street, where we see Engine 10 and Aid 5 as they get toned out to respond to an EMS call around the corner at 318 2nd Avenue South Extension, between South Washington Street and South Main Street. The call was for a homeless person experiencing discomfort. Apparently, the location of the call is a men's homeless shelter, and there are a lot of people milling about in the area, which required some extra man-power in the form of the engine. Medic 10 also responded, as did an SPD patrol car. Aid 5 is a Ford F450 Super Duty. Engine 10 is a 2013 Pierce Enforcer. Enjoy the sound of the tones, as well as the view of the rigs as they respond. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on December 25th, 2019.

Some of us old guys remember a 2 hour TV movie special of "Emergency" was filmed in this firehouse in 1977, when John and Roy came to "observe" Seattle FD's fire and paramedic operations. Back then SFD was using Kenworth chassis fire apparatus.

R. A. Hassel Just saw that on Cozy the other day. Roy even commented on how big the engines were when he first walks into the station. I remember when that aired. I was 8. And though I was saddened that the show was no longer in a weekly run, I thought the movie of the week specials were totally epic. I was fascinated at how differently Seattle FF was than LACoFD (thinking at that age that all FDs were like LACoFD, when in fact almost no other uses the light rescue ALS squad trucks). Loved those movies!

I like the use of the Emergency! dispatch tones as an homage to that great show. Some, possibly all, of the stations in Dallas, TX do the same thing. Life imitating art. Is a second Aid unit now quartered at this station? Possibly A10 or A1?

The operators can sometimes run them constantly which damages the siren. Very expensive to fix. That’s why they came out with the electronic version. No maintenance. However, it ain’t a real fire truck without running a Q siren.

Intresting, but one thing I’ve never understood, is what is the point in deploying a fire engine to a medic call if they are responding from the same station and at the same time as the ambulance. Surely just the ambo should be despatched in that situation, I mean I get it if you’re out in the middle of nowhere and the fire engine is closer, they can first respond, but surely in a case like this it’s just wasting the fireman’s time, and of course exposing them to addition risk by travelling code 3 to an incident where they are not really needed.
@FL92002
@FL92002 4 года назад
The reason the engine went was because the call was in a highly crowded area populated by homeless and mentally unstable people. The engine was basically there for manpower/protection. Seattle PD also responded.
@freddy4136
@freddy4136 4 года назад
Also sometimes the call isn’t fully accurate and the truck has more equipment available if needed.

Thanks for the answer guys. Just find it strange as it’s not something we come across in the uk, although I am aware of joint fire / first responders in rural areas of the country. Normally we would just send one ambo, if there is a perceived threat then the police might also respond. IF the ambo find they need more resources on scene then they would request a 2nd ambo, unless the patent required extracting from somewhere that required fire attendance.

Also for man power. It takes more than 2 people to work a cardiac arrest or if the patient is obese you’re going to need more people.

I want a fire house that has a pole but we are not a big city
@DA-mn2rd
@DA-mn2rd 4 года назад
I worked at a headquarters station with a pole, no one ever used it...Too hard on the ankles and knees.... We used the stairs instead. But when you average 15 to 20 calls a day, you’re not going risk getting hurt. It’s also why many departments will not install poles in new construction stations...too much liability/work related injury claims. Believe me, you aren’t missing anything. They are cool and nostalgic to look at, but that’s about it.
@r.a.hassel8006
@r.a.hassel8006 4 года назад
OHSA has banned the use of poles for the most part, some city's still use them, but you can't build a firehouse today with a pole, and in the case of FDNY Engine 10/Ladder 10 they had to to remove their pole when their firehouse was rebuilt after 9-11 because of new building and safety codes.

If any rig doesn’t have a mechanical siren. It’s not a fire engine. Just like if they are not red. They are also not a fire engine. Period. Sadly. Some vollies actually have them in their POV. That alone is worth a police beating.
