I'm 60 and I cried when Tom Died. To this day I have all his numbers committed to memory from year to year and his totals. How is a record of 48-135 with a 2.52 era when he received 2 runs or less. From 1967 to 77 he was 189 and 110 as a Met for a .632 winning percentage and the Mets were around 47% otherwise. Is there any doubt why he was called The Franchise?

I bet that Nancy Seaver and her two daughters just “love” Fred and Jeff Wilpon for their almost “Herculean efforts” to honor Tom Seaver, the greatest Met of all-time. I got a big kick when new Met team owner Steve Cohen mentioned the Wilpons in his speech on the day Tom Seaver’s statue was unveiled outside of Citi Field and the assembled Mets fans responded with a deafening chorus of well-deserved boos for the so-called “Coupons.” And, can you blame Mets fans, who like Nancy Seaver, were disgusted that the Wilpons seemed to drag their feet when it came to finally honoring Tom Seaver with a statue? Former New York Daily News sports columnist Bill Madden, in his excellent book, “Tom Seaver: A Terrific Life,” wrote that Tom Seaver expressed amazement that Fred Wilpon was so gung-ho to honor the legendary Jackie Robinson (who never played for or had any affiliation with the Mets) and then virtually failed/neglected to honor any of the great Mets of the past (Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, manager Gil Hodges, Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Golden, etc.) when the Wilpons opened Citi Field. The Wilpons were practically shamed by Mets fans and the hosts of WFAN into acknowledging the history and great players of the New York Mets. Somewhere, M. Donald Grant, the late, unlamented Mets chairman of the board, got a big laugh out of that. For once, the imperious Grant was NOT the most disliked former New York Mets team official. Thankfully, “Uncle” Steve Cohen delivered Mets fans from the bungling and penny-pinching of the past.

A VERY WELL DESERVED DEDICATION TO THE PLAYER WHO WAS THE HEART ANSD SOUL OF THE METS. THE GREATEST PLAYER TO PUT ON A METS UNIFORM. A CREDIT TO THE METS ORGANIZATION AND TO MLB. HE WAS THE ONLY PLAYER TO BE BETRAYED BY THE THEN METS' FRINT OFFICE.

The comment she made about Tom being happy that she got a 90 on a test, and asked to work on the things she got wrong, I would tell my daughters that all the time!!

Why Cashmen let him go after 83 is a mystery to me should have had the opportunity to complete his career with NYM with the 86 series capping it off.

Just to be clear it was Cashen, Frank Cashen, not Cashmen. He didn't protect him because he thought at age 39 no one would pick him up..wrong.. and he went on to win 38 more games.
