My Late uncle had the exact same truck he brought it by the same day he bought it to show all of us and I couldn't believe it was a 6 speed lol I finally got my 2006 6speed Cummins in 2009 and its still going strong
Ah yes a man of culture. Starting in 2nd just like me. I’ve got 4.10s in my 04 and 1st is only used when I have a trailer behind me. Unfortunately that’s quite often.
Do you leave your brake on when down shifting? And does it make a difference if it’s on or off while down shifting? I have an 03 6 speed with a pac brake. Thanks!
Hey, yeah I do leave it on when down shifting. It does make a difference when down shifting especially when your towing something. If you’re at all worried about hurting the pac brake or turbo while down shifting with the pac brake on, it won’t hurt anything. The pac brake disengages while the clutch is in and then re-engages as soon as you let the clutch back out and the truck senses the load/pressure. You’re welcome! And thank you for the question!
It’s just like my truck . White 2001 2500 high output 5.9 short box quad cab 6 speed 137k 2” lift 35” procomp revolver wheels. immaculate. Yup, 2nd gear starts. . I enjoy the third pedal and rowing thru the gears . Thanks for the ride .
You’re welcome and Thank you for watching! That sounds like an awesome ride! they are a fun truck to drive. Those revolver wheels are neat too. I still have the stock wheels…debating on what wheels to go with if I decide to upgrade.
@@Richie_RHD hey yeah, so it mounts right onto the back of the turbo. Then your down pipe mounts to it. However you do have to hook up a small air compressor and small air tank on the frame in order for it to work. Is this something you think you might try to hook up? Thank you for watching :)
Ride along giving me memories of a family freind who has an automatic one of these you never let her run down looks fool you when it would hit negative temperatures outside that thing would still start faster than you could blink since It was often cold when I visited I'd get a lift home in it was always a funny challenge talking over a Cummins going uphill😆 thanks for this nice ride along definitely a good one for headphones
Thank you, mine is the same year as yours. This is the Pacbrake Direct mount. Part # PBC 44074. I hope this helps. I do like this brake and it really does help. I mounted my switch down below the fold out change tray instead of the stick shift mount…I thought it was a cleaner look.
That exhaust brake sure does work well. I’ve always wondered about an exhaust brake on a pickup truck. I love the jakes on my body job fuel truck. Hardly ever use my service brakes.
I don’t know how I got so lucky finding it. I had been looking for a clean 2001/2002 1 ton for almost 3 years (on and off). She will be a barely driven garage kept truck for the rest of her life.
It's hard to find a good condition 2G with a 6 speed to begin with. You you got real lucky and got the heated seats and all. That's huge deal to me anyways...
Gonna get through this winter in my current vehicle which i wanna store because it’s kinda vintage but she’s low mileage. Then i think i might get me a second gen cummins
This is a drive through cecil county maryland and into Chester county Pennsylvania. I don’t know much about California, I’ve never been there but I do love it over here because of all the farm land. However a couple weeks throughout the summer it can get pretty brutal as far as humidity. And then in the winter around January and February there can be days where it gets in the single digits with the wind chill. But other than that it’s a pretty neat area.
So much for the manual trans trucks, all history now. Wonder if a guy could come up with a manual conversion kit for these auto trucks and make some money with it.
@@williamhsteele that’s awesome I have an 01 ext cab 2500 nv5600 just installed a freshly rebuilt ISB been a 3 year project but I’m wondering if it’d make sense to add Jakes
@@22richardsmith that’s what’s up! So I did go with the PAC brake system on this and I’m happy I did it. It helps out so much. I’m my opinion having some sort of exhaust/engine brake is worth it, no matter the brand.
Hey, good question. We simply do that because of the amount of torque the engine puts out. It’s easier and quicker to start out in 2nd gear if your not pulling a trailer with enough weight. However if you’re pulling a trailer you’ll end up using 1st gear to get the truck moving for the first 10 to 20 feet usually then go to 2nd gear. You would possibly stall the truck in 2nd gear if you had a trailer, especially trying to start out on an up hill with weight. Hopefully that makes sense. It’s something you have to try out and feel for yourself then you’ll totally understand. Did you get a truck yet? Or are you still looking?
@@williamhsteele that’s explains it really well actually thanks a lot. Im still looking for a manual first gen but I’m not in a hurry so not stressing too much about it, I have a Ford ranger for the moment.
Nice truck the transmission shifts good or seems to . Nice an quiet . My 95 has a rebuilt g56 . It shifts good but it's not quiet . I think it's called gear roll over for what ever the reason . If I short shift mine like your doing it's very noisy. I like to add a exhaust brake to my old truck .
Yeah an exhaust brake definitely helps with these older trucks with their breaking systems. This truck has 4:10 rears which helps it shift right along at lower RPMs. Is your transmission a stock rebuild or did you have upgraded parts put in? Thank you for watching!
Just a stock rebuild . With a dual disc quiet lol Val Air twin disc , BM short shifter . I since added a hydroboost system. A significant increase in braking , it needed it . I will add a exhaust brake to my truck . What do you recommend. My truck has 3.54 gears . My g56 is the first version so over drive is not a high as the later model . I was thinking I might just go a larger tire to make up for that next time . When I changed the transmission mounted 4x4 to a floor mounted 4x4 shifter that was a deal . Works good though . Thanks for the video
Bout to buy this same setup, are these trucks pretty reliable? I want a truck that will last for a long time and I take care of my equipment very well!
These trucks can be extremely reliable as long as the previous owner or owners took decent care of it. The one thing I would absolutely do to the truck is put an aftermarket lift pump on it. I have a fass fuel 165 lift pump on this truck. The one weakness to these trucks is the stock/OEM lift pump and wears out causing the VP44 injection system to go bad. Thank you for watching. How many miles does the truck have on it that you’re looking at?
@@williamhsteele ok I will definitely see if he has already had it done or not, he is a guy I work with and man it’s clean, he has almost 30k in receipts of work done to the truck, new 6 speed transmission, radiator, injection pump, front end was rebuilt and transfer case is freshly rebuilt. New bearings and I joints. A/C was just finished up and all fluids changed. And says he has maintenance records on her. She has 180k miles on her 🤷. And the injection pump is from thorough bred diesel. Asking 16 for it though. That’s why I was curious about them!
@@weepweep2225 that sounds like a good buy. I’ve heard good things about thoroughbreds injection pumps. If you do buy it, it’s not that hard of a job to put an aftermarket lift pump on. And most diesel shops can install one within a day. The 2 brands most people use are Fass and Airdog.
Ian Glover, this is the pac brake brand. It’s the direct mount for the stock turbo or if you have something similar. I have no complaints about it and it was a fairly simple install.
Yep These are the stock seats, They have the ram head etched in at the top of the seat. Both the front and the rear surprisingly have no tears or bad wear marks. Thank you for watching!
How long have you have the exhaust brake? Any valve lift? I have a 4th Gen G56, I have my engine brake on the shift knob. Twisted Shifterz is where I had mine custom made
I have a 97 Standard Cab, love the second gens! Best trucks out there! Great video! Very enjoyable! Also that Cummins sounds amazing that's beautiful interior, is that the original?
Hey Tucker, yeah this is the original interior. I do however have a replacement dash waiting to be installed since the original is cracked of course. And yeah they are an awesome sounding truck! Thank you for watching!
@@williamhsteele yep assume ya have 4:10s with the 3500 , 90% of em had em and i can tell by the vid , mine is 3:55 so i get about 10 feet in first but damm no sound like it , got a 5 speed 12v also had both trucks 20 years , the 12v is more mellow sounding compared to the 24v its more raspy and ignorant ,
@@TheCaperfish yeah I’ve 4:10’s. And that is awesome! Those are both great rigs to hold onto. You’re right about the 12 valves being a little more mellow. I just got an 89 12v 5 spd that I’m starting to work on. It’s going to be a long project.
You can unscrew the shifter shaft and put a crush washer on the part that comes out of the transmission, then screw the shifter rod/knob back on to be facing the correct way by just crushing the washer. Did this on my 2003. Used a Honda oil drain plug crush washer, fit perfect.
I had an 01 6 spd. long box, flatbed. Kept it mint. Sold it with 90000 miles a few years back. Don't need a puller now and have a Ram 1500 v8. I LOVE this quiet, smooth, automatic, low maintenance, cushy ride now. That 01 was I believe the noisiest cummins ever made. Don't miss it.
