With 1000s of pages and strips under his belt, 27-year old Chris Ware graced Fantagraphics and direct market shelves for the first time in 1994 with his formal experimentation and sublime colors & lettering. Acme Novelty Library changed the comics landscape - and spawned a lot of imitators.

As someone who found Ware only with the publication of Jimmy Corrigan the hardcover, I've always wondered what it must have been to be at ground zero for his work, and contemporaries. I'm only halfway through, but this video is a great little journey and time capsule for someone like me!

At some point Fantagraphics sold a discounted package of issues 1-10, which is how I got this . Compared to a stack of normal-sized comics, it's hard to describe the aesthetic pleasure of having a pile of beautifully-crafted comics of multiple sizes and shapes tumble out of a carton in front of a comic lover's eyeballs.

Yes, please. Tally the differences between Acme Jimmy Corrigan and the graphic novel Jimmy Corrigan. That would be fascinating to see and ponder why Ware made the changes and if folks agree with his changes.

Ed, I could literally feel your excitement radiating thru my phone as I watched this video. You’re damn right about that first generation of Fantagraphics artists being unfathomably great. I can sense your pride to be part of the current gen! Once again, thank you guys for turning me onto Ware, Clowes, Burns, Los Bros, Woodring, etc… I love them all!

It still blows my mind how good Chris Ware's work is, with Jimmy Corrigan and Quimby The Mouse. They have SUCH incredible storytelling and design.

Chris has curated and created a showing at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art of what he calls a 3D analog to the strips detailing the history of strips andf alternative comics from late 1800s to 1960s.. I think it's still there-.phenomenal exhibit. you wouldn't believe his personal pieces Chris owns

I found my copy of this at a used record store in the South Chicago burbs. Classic material. Also have a grip of pages I pulled out of the free weekly Newcity his strips were being printed in at the time.

He's always calling back to George Herriman as well. These are probably my favorite comics ever. Picked up issue #1 of Jimmy on a random visit to a comics shop in 1995, and was instantly hooked.

I'm absolutely on board for one of these every month. Chris Ware is a genius, and you've also reminded me that I have a copy of this somewhere.

Apparently there's a lot of Jimmy Corrigan material that was published in local newspapers and tabloids. There's a lot that's in the Acme Library volumes that didn't get into the Pantheon book, too. Especially all the comic ads and non-narrative bits. It would be great for someone to collect all of that into a book. I really think the Acme Library volumes are a better version of Jimmy Corrigan than the Pantheon, but I can't remember whether he actually finished the story in that format.

Yup i still got that standee with all pieces unused and unpunched, standee still folded in half but I had forgotten where i stored it . when i rediscovered it, it got mold on just the bottom part so it is still quite a good example of the huge standee.

Great video with some laughs! Chris Ware is exactly what I think the variety/creative aspects of making comix! I know of his interesting work but never did a deep dive into them! When getting any comics I wanna go right into it! Excellent production values is putting it mildly! Thanks, guys for the creative process/potential of comix! Tadah!

Hard to even type I am so mad I missed out - I was on Chris sale email list for original art. I slept on $300 pages back in the day. I was a poor kid and a big fan.
