In this video I try stick welding out for the second time with my new Lincoln 140 MP. This time I use 3/32" rod and it worked out MUCH better!

John the bead really does look pretty good for just starting. Although it does look like your forcing your speed thats why you are getting slag(flux) inclusions. You're travel and the distance of your arc from the metal will always give you this flux inclusions. Try to keep your rod in your pool of liquid metal and watch the flow or swirl of the flux behind your arc. If you can keep your rod deep in the V of your joining metal you'll get a better bond and it won't allow for the flux to (cool) inside your flow. Your heat looks good according to your arc that I can see in the video so just slow down and keep your rod tight in the groove. Above all make sure you're comfortable while your welding or you hand and body will be jerky or shake and alter you control of the rod which definately results in the end result and quality.

Ahh that makes a lot of sense about why the slag was so bad on those joints. Thanks for the reply! I’ll be sure to work on slowing down and keeping the stick in the puddle as I do that!

Nice progress. Practice makes a welder (the person). You just need to put in the time. If you can afford it, maybe an AC/DC Lincoln "tombstone" welder off CL or something. Running 6013 on AC is better once you get into back yard fixes. Rusty contaminated metal responds well to AC as it helps clean the weld as it goes. Your 140MP and an AC/DC buzz box (transformer welder) will get you through almost any home repair situation :-)

I did some stick in high school and never could get comfortable with it like Mig. It is a damn handy skill though. You can do some serious repairs with stick. yours are looking damn good!

I’m sure glad I’m trying it now instead of back in high school! I prob would have been discouraged and gave up

Thanks for the demo on the 140. Remove the slag before restarting. Those corners on the square with holes and inclusions are from not cleaning slag and welding over it.

Low hydrogen 3/32 7016 rods work really well on machines that run on 120v. Lincoln 7018s that you get at the big box stores work very well also on 120v machines.

Excellent thanks for the info! I’ll be sure to get some of those rods to try out and I’ll be sure to upload a video as well

Very good start and sorry for commenting on an old video as I'm sure you've improved. With 6013, 7016 and 7018 rods, you don't really manipulate the pool where you double back on a weld like you can with mig as the slag is very thick which will give you inclusions. You kind of just drag it and keep the puddle or "mound" a consistent height. You also need to pay close attention to wire or electrode angle with any welding.

@jtmoffroad that really looks great for a beginner and even looks better that some "professional welder" that i have seen.!. in welding class we had to stack beads to conserve metal, lay down a weld bead and the next one would over lap the first by half. after the plate was covered we would turn it 90 degrees and start over top of the last pad. start off with 1/8" thick sheet and end up with like 4" think block if you are ever looking for educational welding videos on utube, you should check out weldingtipsandtricks ( ru-vid.com ) jody has a video on about any kind of welding you can think of and they are by far the best educational welding videos on utube imo !

I hear ya! Being negative sure puts a damper on yourself and the ones around you as well. Much better to be positive

Ah that’s a good idea! I think I’ll start doing that to save scrap metal. I’ve watched some videos from him and also from weld.com. What a wonderful world of information we live in these days!!

Try a 7018 rod it might work better

Hey just my opinion with my experience and skill set, don't ever use 6013 you can't see the puddle and its a low pen rod,6011/7018 is what you need but hey again just my opinion.

Get away from 60 anything, go with 7018 3/32 and play around with 7018 1/8 and see how it runs, 7018 is superior rod in my opinion

It’s powered by 110 volt AC household electricity. The shielding gas, either CO2, Argon, or a mixture of both, is to shield the weld puddle from the air.
