I'm currently doing a plumbing course and it can be slightly difficuilt to grasp through a text book. Theres several times iv 'you tube' certain areas I'm not fully confident in. and several times you have helped me simplify it. So just want to say a big thank you and keep up the good work!! :D #honesttradesman

Great video, it's also wise to put a time-switch on the bronze pump so it only runs when necessary :)

Yeah, no point in having hot water circulating in a loop at 3 in the morning. As James described, it might make sense in a hospital environment though.

How do mate, love the videos thanks, quick question. i've to fit a pressurised hot water cylinder & have been asked about installing a secondary return...I would have thought that this was unusual seeing as the water to the HWC will be pumped via an MQ 3-45 booster pump anyway. would having the booster pump to pressurize the cylinder & a brass secondary return pump on there have any adverse effects??

Hi, in diagram you showed the pump installed on flow pipe from HWSC. while in actual installation it had been installed on return side of flow pipe of hot water to hot tapes. Is this pump pushing the hot water or pulling ?

Best way to wire a seco dary pump? I've seen timers etc before but have come across one on constant. Can you take it straight to the brown switch live from a two port or is it best to get a separate timer?
@cargunnutuk

question for ya if you're doing secondary return systems like this can it then be done in plastic pipe after the pump or does it still have to be copper for the entire system? also i assume you do need a check valve to allow easier flow when the tap is opened and another one to stop water being dragged backwards through the return?

Hi, is secondary return pump needed on unvented, indirect mains pressurised system?
@masterchaz100
@masterchaz100 5 лет назад
So I recently done a full heating system install ( system boiler, indirect cylinder and 6 radiators. I have a question about the radiators so basically the guy I work with had 3 rads on the flow and return circuit and he had tee’d the other 3 radiators from downstairs into either the flow or the return I’m not quite sure what one but he said you can only tee into that pipe no more than once I just wanted to know what he tee’d the other 3 rads into as I’m only an apprentice trying to figure out the whole heating system is a bit daunting but this is the only part I didn’t understand weather he teed into both the flow and return or just one of them any help would be much appreciated?

Almost what I desperately searched for! I wanted to buy and install a circulation pump at the return line of my solar heated unvented cylinder for quick hot water but the sellsman told me that it wouldn't work because of strong open system pressure and that I must use it only with pressure limiter or in a closed system with a heat exchanger. HELP!

Your diagram is incorrect. You do not use a recirculating pump to pump hot water to your system. It is a separate line that returns from the furthest fixture/s. If you were to place it inline as part of your hot water supply line in a system larger than a single family residential system this design would not work at all. I only mention this because you brought up that they use these systems in hospitals. They do not use a system like you illustrated in hospitals. They use hot water return to maintain hot water to all fixtures in the building but the return must be from the furthest fixtures on the line and they cannot have additional fixtures between the pump and the hot water return that ties back into the tank.

Hi PP. Great video. I have a boiler and cylinder in a plant room at the bottom of my garden. There's a hot return on it because without it, it takes nearly 2 mins for the hot water to come in to the last tap. What's an acceptable temperature drop between the flow and return in a system like this? Thanks
@plumberparts
@plumberparts 8 лет назад
+Henry I'd say max of 5 degrees. Just insulate like mad! Please sub >> ru-vid.com

Thanks, it's all covered in at this stage but has been insulated very well underground and pretty well throughout the house. Will measure the temp drop. I subscribed after the first video I watched! 😊

Quick question James - does it matter if there are taps running off the return flow? I noticed in your schematic diagram that you drew taps off the return that's all. Cheers
@plumberparts
@plumberparts 8 лет назад
+Llyr Jones No, totally fine to draw off return. PP!
@mrjones422
@mrjones422 6 лет назад
For a residential application there might not be much of an issue but you cannot put taps off of the return in a commercial application. I just found this video years after it was made but still want to correct the inaccuracies. The pump location in particular is the biggest issue. If the pump is upstream of the hot water system it would have to be sized for the GPM and head of the entire system that is downstream of the pump. For example a 3" hot water line that has a hot water load of 240 GPM would need a pump if installed upstream of that system to be sufficiently sized for that system. However a hot water return pump is downstream of the system and just needs to maintain hot water temperature to the end of the line. In doing this you maintain hot water in the entire line but you do not oversize the pump to handle more load than is required for the return loop.

hi, I am working now on 300 l gedhill unvented solar pump. I looped all the hot outlets and installed a brass pump and a check valve right before the cylinder. The issue I am not sure how can I wire the pump. I was thinking to link with cylinder thermostat. How would you do. Cheers?
@plumberparts
@plumberparts 9 лет назад
Hi Vadim. You wire the pump to a timer. So when people are likely to use the hot water (mornings and evenings) the pump will be switched on. That's it. Easy! :)

I’m not 100% sure if that pump should be on the flow or if it is brass. It’s a hot water “return” pump and I’ve always seen it on the return and have always called the “bronze pump”. But anyway… so why install a shower pump if you can just wack 1 of these on and solve all the pressure problems from the outlets?
