Jhoan Duran is my new favorite pitcher. Both games in the wildcard series he was incredible. Those splinkers are probably the most unfair pitch I have ever seen. It looks like his 100 mph fastball going right down the middle and then ends up nearly hitting right handed batters in the knees with the screwball type movement. He’s special.

My friend is a Jays fan and we talked about the decision to pull Berrios. Obviously it was an analytics-driven decision and not based on what was unfolding in the game. Schneider fell into that trap that the best managers don’t… of course you lean on analytics and metrics to help guide you, but you can’t ignore the human element. Berrios was dealing and the Twins looked lost. The second Kikuchi entered the momentum shifted and the Twins got their mojo back. If that was solely a Schneider decision that’s a tough look, and Michael Kay/A-Rod were right to clown on him for it.

I agree, Ben. I'm a Twins fan in Minneapolis so I don't know if that makes my opinion mean more or mean less here, but I thought it was a terrible mistake at the time. We've watched the same thing happen with the Twins on multiple occasions as well. Advanced analytics are a critically important part of modern baseball, but they should never completely exclude the wisdom and gut instinct of the manager.
@kermitfrog593
@kermitfrog593 8 месяцев назад
Schneider's a yes man following orders from analytics department. The Jays chose a rookie manager for this reason, to follow orders, the real fault lies with the gm.

Jays fans will talk about pulling Berrios until we win a playoff series. Heads need to roll this off-season in Toronto. A top down restructuring of the organization is essential to ensure that this talented core isn't wasted. Atkins, Schneider, and Martinez (hitting coach) should all be on their way out and Don Mattingly should step up as manager. No way Donnie Baseball pulls Berrios when he was dealing like that.
@PlaySA

I mean, I can't fault a decision to put in Kikuchi. I probably would've kept Berrios out there a bit longer but they were just trying to do everything they could to win, and usually putting Kikuchi is going to be a good move.

Even if you want to trust analytics in the Berrios situation, it was almot completely negated by the Twins through pinch hitting. Twins do it all the time and Toronto should have seen it coming.
@gfcpastor

So does this mean the catcher entered "timing pick 2B," and at that moment Correa went to second, just before Gray turned and threw it? Or did the catcher wait for Correa to make his move, then enter the call, with Gray immediately turning to throw?
@PitchingNinjaVideos
@PitchingNinjaVideos 8 месяцев назад
They called it as a play at any point before gray comes set, doesn't have to be at that instant. Gray then went through his normal routine, and when he came set there's an internal count for the pick. like 1, 2...pick that they've practiced. Both Correa and Gray know it, so Correa covers and Gray picks after the count. Correa did get there a little early, but it still worked.

So Sony Grey tweeted he received the signal for the pickoff from the dugout through pitchcom. Why is the dugout using pitchcom? How is this any different than the 2017 Astros?
@PitchingNinjaVideos
@PitchingNinjaVideos 8 месяцев назад
He got it from the catcher, not the dugout. The dugout gave it to the catcher via other signs, not pitchcom. It's in the video. Gray hasn't tweeted in about 2 years.

@@PitchingNinjaVideos sorry it wasn't a tweet. It was a video of him speaking. "Signal was relied from SS to the dugout, from the dugout to the catcher through pitchcom..." how is this ok but banging on a trash can wrong? How is this any different than the 2017 Astros?
@herotomillions4095
@herotomillions4095 8 месяцев назад
@@PitchingNinjaVideos read the rules and regulations. The pitchcom rule specifically says pitchcom signals CANNOT be coming from the dugout. Pitchcom can only be used by the players on the field of play. If this was allowed, why not just bang a trash can. What's the difference? How is this any different than the 2017 Astros? John Gibbons, former Jays manager, just tweeted if a pitchcom signal can come from the dugout then the 2017 Astros have to exonerated. If this was the Astros, they'd be raked over the coals. Anyone who called the 2017 Astros cheaters but don't call the 2023 Twins cheaters, is a hypocrite

Bad move from Vladdy. Runner was at third so his lead should not have been so big that he couldn't get back to the bag.
@PitchingNinjaVideos
@PitchingNinjaVideos 8 месяцев назад
Obviously in retrospect...but it was a 2-0 game and a 3-2 count with 2 outs. Vladdy wanted to make sure he could score from 2B on a base hit to tie the game, so he was taking a slightly bigger lead and ready to go on the pitch since it was a 3-2 count. So, Correa used Vladdy's situational aggressiveness against him, along with the crowd noise because he couldn't hear the coach yelling to get back because Correa was sneaking in to cover.
