John Mayer, ThunderCat, David Ryan Harris, Steve Jordan and Zane Carney secret jam session at Hotel Cafe 3/20/2016 I stopped the recording at end of songs to make sure I get the saves.
I'd love to see a John Mayer studio album with some featured David Ryan Harris vocals, even if it's just harmonies and backing. Those two were a dream team live!
+Daniel Russell He is featured very faintly on 'Paper Doll' off of Paradise Valley. Apparently DRH doubled a lot of what John was doing vocally due to John being worried that his voice wasn't fully recovered. DRH is quite low in the mix though.

Incredibly rare getting to witness 4 incredible musicians on stage just jamming as if they're in their bedrooms. Really special stuff. Thanks for recording!
Love all the players in this group.. The differing guitar playing styles of JM and Zane really adds a lot to these jams... And Steve Jordan's immense groove holds it all together
The lick at 24:45 is a perfect example of no barriers whatsoever between the exact sonic statement in your heart and mind and your ability to produce it with your hands through the guitar. Beautiful.
Anyone feel like if John Mayer found a producer that helped capture his live spontaneity and energy onto record, he would be known as a completely different artist. I wish he would record with Rick Rubin
maybe my favorite mayer performance, and that is really really saying something. It's just such pure music! the soul is just flowing out of all 4 of them!
I gotta say! First off thank you so much to the uploader for documenting this excellence, I watched the whole thing in one sitting! I'm a huge fan of all the musicians involved and the whole loose impov setting was perfect. Now I'm laughing to myself with all the comments about Zane's playing, I have been a little jazz and fusion crazy the past 3 years and if you showed this video to me before that period I wouldn't have understood any of his playing, I diddn't understand any jazz or fusion once I stumbled onto it and then my ears became used to it after awhile and competley broadened my understandings and appreciation of music. I couldn't hear anything that was off-putting, and everyone's entitled to their own opinion, mine is that everything in this show was incredible! One for the books y'all, right here.
Damn, John's singing is at the top of his career in this! So much better technique than early in his career. Like butter! R&B is kinder on it than blues too. Amazing!
I've watched this video a lot of times, and I just now realized around the 48 minutes John takes the whammy bar off and uses it as a slide, I can't believe I didn't see that lol.
Damn, I would have paid good money to have been at this jam. Steve is drum groove perfection and I try to be more like him everyday. Thanks fur sharing this video. Oh my god. A positive comment.......can you believe it?
How can someone play different licks one after another? 😰 Mayer’s talent is beyond me, to be honest 🙏🏻. His phrasing, timing, and feel are as smooth as butter… Every time I see him play, my own playing feels like it’s in dire straits… 😷
Holy shit ! What a live ! JM is wouawwwwwwww ! Others , Amazingggg ! !! This is true music !! I’ll watch this again and again to learn all i can of JM skills !!
Man John is a beautiful musician....i always loved his writing, voicings on guitar, insane rhythm and sense of meter and time. In the beginning I found his lead playing was too SRV derivative , but he has really evolved passed that and become an inspired lead player...well done John...thank you for making me cry and sweat and wanting to pick up the guitar again!
Insane how modal the guys are playing! Also really awesome to see John playing on a "Boutique Strat" like a Suhr. He is getting some great "Jeff Beck" tones with that thing!
Is that a Suhr? Had never heard of them before seeing this clip and your post / I'm guessing only heavy players can spot the difference both on stage or if they were playing one...thing is probably sick. JM is all about the "look closer and see what makes it unique / only some will recognize it" Which is cool.
That's the idea.... give you a small teaser taste with a new studio album, and John records partially developed songs for sale. You like what you hear, then you get smart, and go pay up to see John Mayer play live.... and that's when you REALLY hear the song get fully developed with some jamming thrown in. Then you are hooked on the artist.
The thing about Zane seems to be that he is not used to leading his own band. He is a great player with great technique and things, but the difference with John is that he provides evidence in his playing that lets the rest of the band follow him and thus makes the whole musical feeling better as everybody is on the same wavelength. In opposition to when Zane plays and nobody understands "his groove" due to his lack of experience in leading a band.
+Richard Lund winther I think you're actually right! Zane's a phenomenal guitarist in a band, like his work on the Born n Raised tour. But here his groove isn't really there, unlike Mayer's, who's groove is one of the greatest I've ever heard. Love this jamm so much, since they just let loose of all boundaries and just go with what feels right. Mayer and Steve man... This also made me discover Thundercat :)
That's awesome as well. But I have the information that Asato was watching this gig at the Hotel Cafe and asked Mayer to play his guitar. Lets check that info hehehe
Brothers listen and enjoy, leave the comment's behind, watch how music bring us together, and chilled, if you think this is not for your taste, move on,peace
