SCRIPT
As we all know, rock and roll is made by Satanists intent on hiding subversive messages in their devil music. But what if I told you that all musicians are, in fact, colossal nerds, and those messages are all in Morse code?
Morse code was first developed in 1836, the creation of numerous minds beyond just namesake and cool haircut Samuel Morse. It cemented its value as a critical method of radio communication during the second World War, and remained the maritime distress standard until 1999.
SOS -- which to be clear is a meaningless string of letters, not an acronym -- is the most recognizable snippet of the code, which mixes dots an dashes that can easily be understood audibly or visually. Like when Katy Perry uses it to announce a new record from the top of the Capitol Records building.
Since its completion in 1956, the light at the top of LA's iconic Capitol Records building has been blinking out "Hollywood."
But a month before the official announcement of Katy Perry's Prism, it started communicating the album's name and release date instead. No one noticed. And this led Carson Daly to call Katy Perry a "sneaky genius."
The Killers pulled a similar stunt to promote their recent greatest hits collection, using Morse code in a tweet to spell out their upcoming single, "Shot at the Night." Less committed than Katy Perry.
And way less committed than Rush, who rendered an airport code to 5/4 time.
Others artists have sought more subtle Morse integrations in their compositions. Like Muse, who use handclaps in "Starlight," a song about black holes, to supposedly spell out...tits.
That is unconfirmed, but believed whole-heartedly by many fans and included on their wiki. Here's one that was confirmed by the band -- Dream Theatre tapping out "Eat my ass and balls."
Mike Oldfield, who single handily turned Virgin Records into a profitable enterprise with Tubular Bells in 1973, used Morse code to indicate his displeasure with his label in 1990.
Buried 48 minutes into an album of continuous music, "Fuck of RB," directed at Virgin impresario Richard Branson, was a Dream Theatre-caliber use of dots and dashes.
One of the most creative uses of Morse code comes, maybe not surprisingly, from those lovable Germans, Kraftwerk.
More than a curious rhythmic foundation, the Morse code in "Radioactivity" is central to its lyrical themes, playing on the fear of nuclear fallout with the rhythm of a language primarily associated with disaster.
While it's no longer a licensing requirement for pilots, or captain, or anyone, the open secret mystery and natural rhythms of Morse code means we'll probably be hearing it buried in our record collection, telling us to someone's ass and balls, well into the future.

They missed what I personally think is the coolest one. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony - the one everyone knows, "dadada daaaa dadada daaaa" - opens with, well that bit. In morse code, that spells the letter V twice, and V in Latin is 5 - the number of the symphony. More sophisticated than tits I reckon.

The flute opening of the theme for the 1970s British TV show "Some Mother Do 'Ave 'Em" spells out the name of the show in morse. It's well hidden by the rhythm and changing notes, but it's there in the note lengths. Also, the TV show "Morse" has less subtle morse code spelling "morse" in the main theme.

Since the code requirement for ham radio is gone, a lot of people are learning it because they want to, not because they have to. This alone will keep Morse Code (CW) going, since those who learn it for fun will stay at it, and it might just end up being one of those things that's cool to know, and not just handy.

In the U.K. at least there’s still a CW portion in the various licensing exams. For Foundation I just had to show I could key a given message with competence. It was only a few characters long and I was given the message in Morse. I had really shaky hands and a killer headache that day and kept messing up. After a few unsuccessful attempts I keyed SOS and the instructor laughed and said I’d competently sent a message and passed me. I’m fairly certain it gets harder with the Intermediate and Full exams but I’ve not reached them yet.

I've never heard anyone else mention this. On the Double Fantasy album, there is a morse code message in-between "I'm Losing You" by John and "I'm Moving On" by Yoko. It is more pronounced on the record, but you can hear it on RU-vid if you play the whole album. At the end of "I'm Losing You", as the volume goes down, you can start to hear what sounds like one note of a keyboard sending morse code. It's not a pure tone, it sounds slightly modulated. You can hear...OVE YOU I LOVE YO...then it is covered up as "I'm Moving On" starts to swell into the next song. Did John tell Yoko I Love You twice with a single note? Who was playing the keyboard on the recording? Did John, or Yoko, even know about that? This was in 1980 after the album came out. I wanted to write to John and ask about that, then the world lost John Lennon in a senseless violent act by a psychopath. I thought about writing to Yoko, but her world was shattered and I didn't want to bother her. I'll ask John some day after I cross over. I'm 68 now, it won't be too much longer. WB5QLI

We still use Morse Code to communicate. The transmission method is turning the transmiitter on and off in the pattern of the letters, numbers, punctuation, and special symbols This method is very simple, and by virtue of its simplicity, can complete a communication when infrastructure goes away (either in consequence of a human act or owing to conditions of nature). Compare it to computer binary. Some radio operators actually enjoy using it and are quite skilled. 73 DE WA8YCD.

Start slow :) Learn individual letters, randomly. Then, it's practice. Funny thing is, when you're trying to learn to copy faster, it seems hard. But when you just use it and have fun with it, you're speed picks up really fast. I had a hard time getting to 20 WPM, but getting to 40 was easy :)

I really enjoyed watching your video and left of course with a like:D Especially, it was interesting for me, because I'm currently pretty into the topic of forensic sciences(including linguistics) and all that crime stuff, but I have a question: So you basically just explained that music is in fact often decoded in morse code with certain meanings behind, didn't you? But it would actually be amazing to know how it actually works. Do you like have to learn by hard the translated letters in the morse code? Or how does it actually work?

I would say just go for it! watch a few proper RU-vid videos on the subject, just do anything that you can to acquire an understanding. Get as much practice in. Use audios. You could choose to skip visuals and really pay attention to audio solely. Or find your own unique way of learning while still following the fundamentals.

Will it still be around in 10 years? Absolutely. It's still the most reliable/robust means of communication. It's very easy to discern from a noisy background, such as a very weak radio signal - far, far easier than voice. Ask any ham. When voice communication is impossible, Morse code can get through, and someone really proficient at it can send/receive faster than people can text. It's the original digital mode of communication, if you think about it.

S.O.S is NOT a meaningless string of letters, it IS in fact an acronym, standing originally for "Save Our Souls". This was an acronym which could be spelled out in morse code, for example, by ship using their floodlights (or whatever those lights are at the front of the ship) to signal to nearby ships that they were in need of immediate assistance in the event of an emergency.

Jaydee Paquette wrong, it does not stand for save our souls or save our ship or anything else that people make up. It does not stand for anything. It was picked for the simple reason of being easily recognized and remembered, that's it. They were originally using CQD for help, I think it was.

Unsurprisingly, the theme to Inspector Morse had a recurring motif based on the Morse Code for, erm, MORSE. Allegedly, variations were occasionally broadcast with a character's name (either the killer or a red herring), and it's rumoured the final episode had "Goodbye Endeavour Morse".

In They Might Be Giants' song Pencil Rain, (which itself is a song about the absurdity of war glory and a pun on the recently released Prince hit,) a morse code sequence during the middle guitar solo translates to "Ay, ay, ay, ay, canta y no llores," which is a line from the traditional Spanish song "Cielito Lindo." In English, that would be "Ay, ay, ay, ay, sing and don't cry."

Joseph Ferri sometimes songs do not say much about explosions, and sometimes lyrics are explicit 'i'm breathin in the chemicals... welcome to the new age' is so typical of illuminati's agenda etc. but Beyonce's album is a tricky one cuz the lyriucs are not so evident but the sequence of titles reminds me of that HIT MUST STEEL PLANE.... before 9/11 and here we have ROCKET BLOW MINE...

Not really hidden at all, but Thrice's 2005 record Vheissu opens with the Morse Code for the album title and then uses it as a backbeat for the rest of the song. Also, the opening track is titled 'Image of the Invisible' and has the fantastic line 'we're more than static and dial-tone.'

The NPR news quiz show "Wait! Wait! Don't Tell Me" begins with a sample "short wave radio tuning" sound effect which includes the letters TBCD, or perhaps ABCD starting partway through the A. I have sent the show a message asking if there is a reason behind this, but have not received an answer.

Probably too obscure to mention, but the psychedelic folk band Pearls Before Swine set a precedent for this when they hid the F word in morse code (in the chorus, so basically in plain sight) in one of their songs, called "Oh Dear Miss Morse", just in case people wouldn't take the hint.
