Secret of Evermore commercial

TV commercial for the SNES video game, Secret of Evermore, circa 1995 or so. It was produced for us by a Seattle ad agency called "McFarland Richards & Graf". I'm assuming they farmed out the animation. That's all I know about it.
I am supplying this for the sake of historical/archival interests. This video is not monetized and never should be. If RU-vid auto-monetizes it, please notify me by DM so I can undo it.
This video came with no accompanying metadata, but it is safe to assume it is ©1995 Squaresoft (now folded into Square-Enix), and that all standard copyright laws are applicable.

Hopefully the animation gets analyzed some day. Hopefully soon enough for the game's 25th anniversary. BTW, to provide what my opinion on SoE is, obviously, that while it has clear flaws that are worth calling out such as the Verminator fight, it still ages with absolute grace even without considering what it was stuck with both physically and in terms of management. You have a Designing For episode here because of gameplay that I particularly welcome: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VSXndXJGGas.html Also, the Gothica region becomes my favorite region just because of how robust the surrounding story's execution actually is. Symbolic sewers management, involvement of Dark Is Not Evil in a 90s game, music making the best of the general sadness of the story, and of course, the relationship to the game's theme of survival in a strange world all make for a very sound product. While the gameplay is bog standard in Gothica, the story still sells me on the region.

+ItsBillsFault, i know who you are and i am deeply honored that i can write something on your channel. I think Secret Of Evermore is a real masterpiece. When i was a kid i used to go outside and gather ashes and roots for the right formula and played like Evermore was real. It was a game with such a great dark mysterious ambiance, even afther i finnished it i wanted to search all the area's so maybe i could find a bigger story, or new formula's. Even when time passes (and i am 33years old now) i sometimes wake up with this feeling, the need to play this game again and i still do so, there has almost never a year or two passed in where i have not played Secret Of Evermore! I do like it that you take youre time to leave comment's on diffrent channels and take youre time to speak with people that are playing the game. I can sense a feeling of accomplishment in you when you write to these people. For this i wish to thank you for having a big meaning in my life and i believe i speak for more people than just me. I rented this game back in the day, because I had Secret of Mana and played the shit out of that in the first half of 1996 along with Mega Man X. I got into Super Metroid early summer 1996, Super Mario RPG late summer 1996, and throughout that year, I rented games like Mega Man X2 and X3, A Link to the Past, and Yoshi's Island and then later on, I rented Secret of Evermore, because it appeared to be a game like Secret of Mana. I got stuck because I couldn't find the levitate spell and I wasn't gonna rent it again... but then, I had a dream. I had a dream that I was on a river and then washed away, and then my character got to the next area, where there were pirates and my dog was nowhere to be found, so I couldn't confirm if he changed form like we saw in the opening credits sequence. I knew that it was nonsense that there'd be pirates in antiquity, but I was curious, so I rented it again and figured out the volcano and levitate thing. And sure enough, my dream accurately predicted what would happen next and to this day, I still have no idea how my subconscience figured it out with the pirate thing and eventually I got the game for Christmas, though I think I won it during my last rental and was a bit shocked that the first boss fight in Omnitopia was actually the final boss. But when I got the game, it came with a poster advertising other Square games that I knew I had to try. Final Fantasy 4 and 6, Chrono, and Breath of Fire. I managed to find FF6 and Chrono in the rental stores and years later, I got FF4 and Breath of Fire as roms and honestly, Breath of Fire was underwhelming. Most gamers though, missed out on Secret of Evermore. I put Evermore in my top 20 SNES game countdown. I played most of the SNES hits as a kid, but I did miss out on Castlevania IV and Contra III, which were good, but honestly, they are kind of more niche and based on the Wii U VC, they aren't downloaded as often as many other games. facebook.com/notes/scott-stevenson/top-20-snes-games/10155653081731165/

This was one of the rare games I beat as a kid. It was imaginative, the action was cool and I was presented with a challenge everywhere i went. I also loved that this game was about a boy and his dog simply trying to get back home after having an adventure of their own. I would love it if Square-Enix remade this game for the Switch or PS4. Expand the World of Evermore more, go deeper with the characters and the dichotomy of facing the negatives along with the positives of a fantasy world gone wrong.

This game I like the most of all time playing it probably 1000+ hours... and I like a lot of other games and genres... ... asstounding job your team and you made. I am actively playing this game since 1995 and I found myself ways to make it harder. I know you heard of the balance patch with its awesome modifications to game mechanics eg. weapong and alchemy or character leveling including many bugfixes. That's a must. But it is still relatively easy. My current co-op run consists of addtional requirements: - wearing no armor at all, - only 4 spells active at the same time, - no ingredients pick-ups, - no charms except chocobo egg. - no talk to cecil I can tell, this got me a whole new experience which I deeply enjoyed after nearly 25 years. Facing mostly death within 2 enemy hits brings the experience to another level. But, this is not the end of the latter. speaking about that... I found this: docs.google.com/document/d/1ATZtWQUMtIPBBl7UM2P_HnZLSKI3atXaM5M-XjASx-s/edit Very interesting... :O Dozends of achievements have been added to a SoE patch which can be used in an supporting emulator. Besides all the good or even excellent things of SoE, some dampen the fun. (probably none of these you and most are complaing about) - Alchemy Engergize makes the endboss fight a joke (especially if you're using the special spot, dont want to spoiler here) - Usage of oracle bone for only one uselss alchemy 'stop' (same aspplies for spoon on market or some ingredients, which can be ignored) - The usefulness of some alchemy spells is more or less non existing because of lacking enemies (reflect only useful for Face and Metal Magmar) or better alternatives (stop and some others) Along all the other fixed things in various patches, maybe some of the above will be fixed, too. I thought about replacing one of Energize's ingredients to something hard or expensive to obtain like meteorites, dry ice, feathers like the balance patch did it with barrier replacing one ingredient by atlas amulett. (great decission) As the Silver Sheath bug has been fixed, I am pretty sure that somewhen the MG will be used for any other benefit... so there's hope. In 25 years, questions arised. Some could be clarified in the meantine, but some not. I would like to know if you know something about: - first gourd in the volcano pipe needs 1 second delay after opening. Why the delay? What will be checked? - planned location for dummied out spell Laser? And why was it not implemented. Rush at the end or other reasons? - are the two desert of doom "warp tunnels" glitches or planned shortcuts used by the devs? - there is one chest in a ebon keep house which cannot be opened...bug? - same question as above for a pot in the pyramid which cannot be opened. the area for the two doors opened by the dog on the south left side, the right of both pots. - rumored dry ice seller in rufflebergs lab complete fiction? Trivia: That the Magic Gourd has absolutely no effect is not quite true, despite you can read this everywhere. Possessing the MG increases the found amound of juwels in ceramic pots from 10 to 50, but this also applies for the chocobo egg, so no primary effect of MG. Nonetheless, it's a good way of money grinding. 250-350 juwels gain can be possible per 9x 5 ceramic pots buy. Would love to hear your thoughts on these topics.

I saw this commercial often in the 90's. So fucking EPIC! Best Childhood Memories.

I often played this game at the SNES display unit at a local department store. I still have so many memoriesnif that although I guess it was only a few hours of gameplay altogether and always at a different point of the game, as others obviously continued the savegame all the time haha I guess this is a kind of gaming experience that onlyna certain generation knows, today this is not very common any more (at least where I live)

I don't work for them anymore, so I can't speak for Square[-Enix] but they seem utterly uninterested in making anything of the franchise, so in my humble opinion as a private person, you're welcome to fire up a rom in an emulator. There are even patched roms that fix some of our bugs and enable the 2P mode that was disabled for release because we were too worried about our support staff being overwhelmed with players who got their two characters stuck apart from each other. Just sayin'. ;)

Do my eyes deceive me, or did you rip this from a master tape? It practically seems high def, despite being from 1995.

sarysa this is actually one of the original developers accounts if I’m right.

It wasn't the master tape. It was just a sample VHS tape they gave us. I assume they used a better format internally and for distribution to broadcasters, something like D-3 maybe? I dunno, I never got into professional video around that time.
@KillThad

@@ItsBillsFault Would you consider re-transferring the tape if you still have it? A higher quality version would be nice especially after 12 years of RU-vid compression.
@ItsBillsFault
@ItsBillsFault 4 года назад
@@KillThad I doubt it would make much difference to transfer it again. I used a high-end digital VCR from the tail end of the VHS days to play it back over component video and captured it with a full 480 lines of resolution to high-bitrate MP4, as I recall. I was aiming to archive the video, after all. As for RU-vid's compression over the years: when you upload a video, they keep the original source file you send, so they can re-transcode to streaming formats whenever they make improvements, so it should actually look better than when I first uploaded it, not worse. I'm pretty sure their encoders have gotten a lot better at allocating bits to the right parts of the scene since then. You have to remember, this was recorded on VHS, which was basically composite video on a tape. The original quality itself was not exactly stunning.

@@ItsBillsFault Oh, so you pulled out all the stops in capturing it. That's pretty sweet, especially back in 2007. By any off chance, do you still have the source file? I know it's been 12 years and it's always safe here on RU-vid, but I'm curious to see the lossless capture quality.

With the recent release of "Sea of Stars", it's very encouraging to see the Creative Director and CEO of the indie developer reference Secret of Evermore as a top-5 inspiration. Made me want to reach out and tell you just how much Evermore has meant to me over the years. I replayed it a month or so ago and I ground enough money to buy the Amulet of Annihilation from the Mad Monk for 10,000 Jewels THREE TIMES in order to receive the Egg of Chocobo, the Magic Gourd, and the Wizard's Coin. @ItsBillsFault
