We have a kitten for the first time in over 20 years of marriage and we pretty quickly purchased a cat tree. He pretty much sticks to the tree but anytime I catch him starting to scratch my furniture, I correct him. Cat trees are not pretty, but I knew if I attempted to make one with my crepe myrtle tree branches and baskets I wouldn't be happy. But I have a feeling you would be able to make a beautiful one! It takes a little planning but I would love to see what you would come up with! We ended up buying one that went pretty well with the furniture and sits behind the couch so it's mostly hidden. The only other option is declawing them, and I am not a proponent of that option.

Allow me to say, that you have a beautiful face, a beautiful voice, beautiful hair and you are talented. You are blessed in life. For the kitties why not try to hang strong a wall tapestry or "long tapis" in french that could be part of your decor but even if it have kitty scratchs is always nice to watch? 😊

The white sugar bowl you use to hold pens struck a nostalgic note with me. I chose that pattern when I registered with a lovely gift shop in Memphis, Tennessee in 1970 when I married. It is called Independence. The cups, plates, saucers . . . all of it was shaped in that unusual hexagon. My husband, Gary, (I am using his computer to write this) was in the Navy and we lived in Rota, Spain for 3 years. When the Navy shipped our household items to Spain something happened to my Independence ironstone . . . maybe heat? I don't know . . . but when I opened the box it was cracked, almost every piece. It wasn't broken or chipped, but the top glaze was cracked like enamel on a tooth that is damaged. The cracks on the plates were spiral, almost intentional looking. I was so sad about it. For years I kept the pieces that survived especially the large tea pot and a serving bowl but the glaze on them finally began cracking too. I really loved that set and have seen examples of it over the years though not always with the name "Independence" written on the bottom. Eventually Gary bought me an 8 place setting of the blue and white willow pattern (a favorite of mine from childhood when my aunt let me play with her child's tea set in that pattern). I have become a collector of the blue and white but seeing your sugar bowl was a real treat.--Sheila McDade, Chattanooga, TN

Hello, give your kitties a scratching post. To get them to use it sprinkle some catnip on it and they will love going to it to scratch. Here is some more technical info on why cats need to scratch: Scratching is a normal, instinctive cat behavior. Cats have a need to scratch. They do it to express emotions, like excitement or stress, to mark objects with their scent (they have scent glands in their paws), to remove the dead part of their nails and, often, just to get a good stretch. My kitty loves her scratching post and has never scratched my furniture. Hope this helps !

I have a cardboard scratcher in every room and 95% of the time he uses it, however, cardboard bits get everywhere. Seems that in general, indoor cats are more difficult to include in a decor scheme (ahem litter box) but what is practical for both human and cat? I ❤ my boy but looking for inspiration

Applauding your decision to leave the oak desk natural- beautiful styling. Cats are wonderful companions but their scratching can be so destructive. However, they hate the smell of Citrus- I have successfully discouraged their presence by spraying citrus scent either directly on (depending on the fabric) furniture or on a towel draped over the piece. They left those pieces strictly alone afterward, and the room smelled great during the 'training' period.

Our cats did the same thing with our furniture. So, a few years ago when we moved we got all new living room furniture, and chose velvet or velvet-like upholstered pieces. I heard that cats don’t like to scratch velvet, and it has been 2.5 years, and so far this is true for us. No scratching! We also leave those inexpensive cardboard scratchers around the house for them.

Love your videos… from two days ago I heard your heart felt voice about your kitties… I trim my kitties nails about every 8-10 days; have rectangular scratching boxes discretely placed around major areas in my LR, put dried cat nip in them every three weeks ( just a little), and reprimand them if they go to the sofa or chair instead of their cardboard scratcher box. I even bring them to the scratcher to familiarize it, and give them a treat to reinforce good behavior. All of this does work. I’ve tried other things but this seems to our solution. Best! Peg S.

I am so relieved about the secretaries desk. I refinished antiques for over 30 years. I refinished 3 desks. I only had one that had the tiger on it. I love it.. When it is covered in old lacquer and you strip it back it is fun. ( for me ) refinishing those small letter boxes was not my favorite.!! maybe the lamp you have on the desk would look good on the small table. Then the other lamp ( if you get it?) would look great on the top of the desk. have fun! Joyce

Everything looks beautiful Sarah! I trained my Ragdoll cat when she was a kitten to only use the scratching posts I provided. You need several around, even near the furniture they are using. I rubbed the scratching posts with cat nip and every time I caught her trying to claw the couch edges I carried her to the post and lightly ran her paws over the post and said good kitty, lots of loving praise. Also there is a spray called Felaway that can be sprayed on the areas you do not want the cats to scratch that does work. Their website has info on how it works. The main thing is you need to catch them doing it most every time and immediately redirect in a positive way. If they are still young it should work. It takes some time and effort but you will be glad you did this when you don't have torn up upholstery! Julia

For having light in a dark spot with no outlet near, and not have to use a candle, try a kerosene lamp. There's some really beautiful vintage ones. You do need to keep kerosene and get wick for them, but they offer a lot more light than just a candlestick, and they're beautiful. I also live the smell of kerosene because it brings fond memories to me, but do be aware that there will be a slight kerosene smell. I have a couple of those lamps in my house and they brighten up my winter twilights. ✨

Our cats have a scratching post that they use. We trim claws regularly, as well. Although our leather chair and ottoman are not scratched, I do have a blanket on them, as they are favorite napping spots for the cats. I had to decide, when I got the leather pieces, that I would not panic over some scratches, as just the jumping on and off might bring a few. So far, none. Clip nails and give scratching post options and see if this does not help. Front declawing is also effective. We work with our cats from kittenhood to use the scratching post.

Someone has probably already said this in the comments, but kitties scratch to mark territory, and they do it in places they love, so they’ll be inclined to do it in every room they feel at home. The best thing I’ve found it placing ugly scratching posts at the corners of the couch or wherever they scratch. Doing beautiful ones could be an option too. Jackson Galaxy gives great cat advice about this topic, but yeah…the struggle is real for aesthetics.
@LisaMarie-br8tn

Yup lots of scratching posts and cat towers. I also clip claws weekly. Its important to keep claws trimmed because they grow too long and they can get caught in fabric ect causing them pain. Since I had my kitties since they were babies they are very used to getting them trimmed. I also used nail caps for the first six months I had them and I have almost zero problems with my 4 cats clawing my vintage possessions. Good luck 🤞

I love your doorbell! We have an antique one like it and not many people know to twist it. They’re not sure what it is. When we were having our old house restored, the electricians forgot to wire for a doorbell, which really bummed me out at the time(I wanted one of those nice bonging ones), but I got over it. Ours sounds like yours, but it’s an antique gold.

You need to give the cats something they can scratch and teach them that is their scratch place, they like to scratch stuff that has your scent on to leave their mark on as well and also to sharpen their nails. So the more you cut the nails the more they will scratch stuff. There is something on the market to spray on the pieces you don't want them to scratch. Doesn't always work, but worth a try. Good luck!
@latte1020
@latte1020 9 месяцев назад
I’ve had cats for over 20 years and cats scratch stuff for different reasons: marking, it helps their claws etc. So of all my cats over the years only one was stubborn he would scratch edge of couch. I used the double sided sticky tape you put on furniture in the areas they’re scratching. Now it’s not fashionable BUT it works!! They hate that feeling. In places where they’re scratching place scratching posts right in front of the furniture. In your case you may need a few. They need to scratch something so give them something. When you catch them in the act just scoop them up and take them to the scratching post and take their paws and rub them against the post. Give them a treat then. Cats are smart and they will learn. Once you see they stopped scratching the furniture you can remove the tape. If you are able to, trim their nails. Normally they only need it once or twice a month. I have three cats now and they DO NOT scratch the furniture.

PS: I have the same cat issue; my furniture (mostly white/linen Pottery Barn style) is totally ruined, particularly all my sofas and my wicker armchairs in my little sun room full of plants… it is a total disaster and the only solution I found is maybe waiting for her to go without never replacing her in the future (she is 15, but looks like she will live 100 !!! ) Pets are wonderful, but if you have them in your home, do not expect to save anything precious ; the American culture is prioritizing the pets over precious decoration. My parents, who live in Europe in a castel where walls are covered with silk and carpet are from Persia, keep their dog outside. He is only allowed inside the kitchen, where the floor is clay tiled the walls stones and the cabinets hard wood. There is no other solution, it is just a choice….and of course trim the nails/claws
@garymcdade4446
@garymcdade4446 9 месяцев назад
They do love their dogs in Europe . . . except for Spain, I lived there for 3 years and the only dogs I saw were owned by American service men and oh yea, once I saw from my rooftop some Spanish children throwing tiny puppies against a stone wall killing them. I yelled at them and they ran away laughing. Houses in America are more like kennels than homes.

About the cats. It is their nature to scratch and for the health of their claws, which if they were out in nature, they would be used for defense. Cut them often but it would be hard to keep they from doing what comes naturally for them (ask me how I know). Keep a spray bottle near by and spritz them if you catch them doing it. Also keep lots of scratching posts around for them that they are allowed to scratch.

may be your cats dont have anything else where to scratch their claws. you can put a scratching (in your case should be probably removable)post or mat. thye dont do it on purpose, its an instict, they need to sharpen their claws somewhere.

I was just going to say to use a rechargeable bulb. I thought there were some that last much longer than 4 hours but perhaps those are the puck bulbs.

I have 3 house cats that do go outside occasionally. Only one scratches on my upholstered furniture. I raised her from a kitten, I have no idea why she scratches and the other two never do! They have 3 scratching posts in the house. If someone has a magic solution I would love to know about it too. And I am so happy you did not paint that secretary desk!😀

I love the desk and the way you styled it. I think the white mirror over it, takes away from it. Just my opinion, I’m not a professional. Lol But I love the new look.

Me too. I went back and looked a couple if times. It definitely takes away from the look. Like a sudden scratch in a lovely soft recording 😮! For those old enough to remember what an old record player sounded like.😊

That desk/secretary is beautiful. I would Agee with not painting it. Some pieces can be painted without hurting the long term value, but those antiques made with beautiful and expensive woods should not be painted. Even if they may not be in style at the time, they will come back in style if they are made well and beautiful. There was a time in the 30’s and 40’s where women painted all the old furniture they had to change up the look. My mom spent much of the 60’s stripping the paint off of many beautiful antique pieces, some of which I have in my home now. While I have a few painted pieces in my home, watching my mother growing up I learned not to paint over beautiful oak or walnut if the piece is made well and in excellent shape. They will endure the test of time.

I'm surprised that your cats are scratching the furniture since they go outside. Maybe, since you have multiple animals, they are trying to claim their territory inside. Hope you can work it out. Thanks for the great video!

It is indeed called a “lampe bouillotte” , which is a French Empire style very popular lamp, from the Empire (Napoleon Bonaparte) time, early 1800s’. The word “bouillotte” refers to the shape of a “bouillotte”, an hermetic recipient containing boiling water to warm beds during the winters. I agree the word bouillotte is difficult to pronounce if you are not French born ! (Booh-yo-t-heu). Beautiful setting for the secretary, so glad you did not paint it. As for the need of a lamp and the darkness of the room…. It just comes from this terrible dark color you did put on the walls of a living room that should be full of light…🙂

"TERRIBLE DARK COLOR" ??? Did you not get that she is going for DARK ACADEMIA style? Did you see it before she painted it . . . WHITE, WHITE, WHITE and it was plain jane. I personally am into the dark academia . . . my living room is a forest green, my library is deep blue, and my bedroom is chocolate brown. Guests to my home always compliment me about the color of my walls.

Please don’t be mad, but I think the lamp looks too big. I feel a small milk glass lamp would work better. Even one with a shade so you can put your fabric on it. I have an antique dome glass lamp that brings more light to the area.❤

I think it’s totally fine that you didn’t paint the furniture, but I think it’s also fine if you did! Where is the rule that you can’t paint an antique? From what I gather, if you are looking to sell an antique and want to retain its value, it’s probably not best to paint it, but if you don’t care, then go for it! I was recently looking at a post in a decorating group where a woman posted a photo of a gorgeous antique armoire and she had painted it white and then distressed it. She had found the piece in an old barn and it would have been headed to the landfill. It looked amazing! But I could not believe all the hateful and ugly comments she got from women over her choice to paint it. I was literally shocked that people in a decorating group could be so mean over something that really didn’t matter! I paint antique furniture all the time and I also have pieces that I leave as is! It fits my home and I love it that way! I can still appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship even if there are a few layers of paint on it! Just wanted to voice this as I see this touchy subject all the time!! Everything turned out beautifully, Sarah!! 🥰

Love the secretary and the styling.... but , my personal opinion is that the white lamp does not feel right with all the vintage books and items in the cubbies. It looks so modern, and everything else looks like it has a history.
