Not to mention that the respirator mask will not function as designed unless he's clean-shaven to get a good seal. He's just breathing in the particulates through his beard.
Absolutely agree. As much money as he will be / are spending to restore this beautiful building a little to protect himself should be spent. Guessing he is still young enough to blow off our efforts to protect, but if he's incapacitated due to injury or illness it might jeopardize the whole project. OK enough, you certainly have plenty of people on your case about safety.
I'm watching you struggle with a wheel barrow, on wobbly planks, why don't you make a serious and safe ramp, you know there is a ton more barrow work to go
For the love of god, take some time to sort your bloody ramp out. Just spend ten minutes and do a proper job on it and then you won't have to fix it every other time you run the wheelbarrow up it. Work smarter, not harder.
I would buy the strongest tarp I could find out and place it near the opening making small - medium loads then gather up the four corners and drag it out with my vehicle, you could still use the ramp for more ease. The tarp might not last that long depending on the weight of the loads but it would be a heck of a lot safer.
Would really love to see a structural engineer out there to assess the stability of the foundation and the higher floors before the jet wash gets revved up. Would really hate to see the pointing get loosened and potentially contribute to any destabilization that might lead to injury. Sorry for being a wet blanket, but as a physical therapist, I am seeing head injury written all over this. Love the work you've done thus far, Dan, and just looking out for safety!!! You are an inspiration!!
Just because it's not been in a video doesn't mean it hasn't happened. For a historical building like this, he has to involve professionals like you suggest already. Trust he has done more research (as required by the local government) than we have physically seen him do.
Fortunately/unfortunately though it's all going to have be new. There may need to be a steel infrastructure or an inner cinder block wall to hold the weight and the stone walls would fasten to it for support. The historic outside may end up being more a decorative veneer than actual structural support.
Another great vlog Dan! You are truly amazing! All I’m saying is: - hard hat - eye goggles - face mask -steal-toe boots - hernia/back brace - a confounded ramp 😂lol ! ❤ great job!
Dan what about filling those steps with soil and then place two planks side by side, this would put less strain on your back and legs, please think of your health and safty😊
For such small spaces, I would recommend rubble buckets. You have to walk more often, but walking up stairs is much easier with it. You can use the wheelbarrow outside.
@@polo86cfahrer Was thinking the same. Or making a frame to go over the stairs to turn it into a ramp. The first time that wood flips up and hits Dan in his family jewels - he might do something else! I didn't even think of dirt - brilliant, cheap idea.
A trick I learned over many years of hard landscaping labor is to use some of that rubble tamped down to build a ramp with...the powdery sandy stuff at least under the wooden ramp to bolster
Dan - on one of your recent posts you seemed to be apologising for possibly making some money from your Patreon account. You are providing some wonderful entertainment so there is nothing to be ashamed about getting some return on your investment in time and effort. I keep telling all met friends about your courageous efforts and entertaining enthusiasm. Onwards and Upwards Howard (in Ibiza)
Would you believe it - Dan is in his car pulling away from the chateau and there is his blue hard hat on the wall at the top of the steps…speechless 😂😂😂
I'm sorry, I laughed when the board broke with the wheelbarrow. It reminded me of my brother and all of the ramps that he and the neighborhood boys would build in order to try to jump with their bikes. Luckily everyone survived!
What an absolutely fascinating journey you are taking us on. The picture of the Old Chateau was fascinating and I am sure you will find more to help in rebuilding her. Each day, this Chateau is coming more to life. Thank you for all you are doing!
Inspirational, Dan!! This is an amazing project! As someone who had a similar dream of restoring not a chateau, but a thatch-roofed farmhouse, I'm familiar with the intense motivation to keep pushing through projects. Problem is, after many days of hauling junk out of the barn, I earned myself a hernia. Now I can't do light labor for more than two hours at a time and have chronic painful sciatica. Caution and safety equipment would give peace of mind, ensure that you've got your strength and stamina over the long term, and also set a good example for the kids. Lots of great hints from other posters about specifics. Take good care of yourself!
When reading some of the comments I am happy that I am not a RU-vidr 😵💫 I really enjoy watching your vlogs and I am really happy about it everyday. Your doing a great job Dan.
just a matter of how to deal with it - obviously can be a great concept for youtube to do things wrong or in an unsafe manner as it triggers a reaction - the more reactions the better for the channel
Consult with a proper mason, jet washing the basement sounds like a BAD idea. Better to sand blast. Also get Ecoflow to sponsor you and send a power unit.
Dan. If you have a portable car compressor it might be an idea to inflate you wheel barrow tyre a little more. Also a more secure form of ramp would be a little safer. The electricity being connected will be so beneficial for your future chateau work. Keep up the amazing job.
I have always wondered why there isn’t more metal hinges, brackets, legs, etc. among the debris. Has it been established at this point that the fire was deliberately set and therefore, stripped of all furniture and valuables beforehand? I can only maintain my ongoing admiration at your perseverance, determination, hard work and vision! Stay safe and stay healthy for your delightful boys!!
I would count on the probability that anything interest-worthy was looted after the fire. The owner reportedly only escaped by tying bedsheets together and climbing out a window. So, if it was arson, it wasn't planned out well.
@@loloholmes2793 Obviously but so far it's the only source I have about that story. If(!) the story is correct, the arson was either poorly planned or the story becomes even more sinister, considering the owner's wife was in the building when the fire started. I do suspect the chateau was at least partially emptied before the fire because the bathrooms seem to have very little fire damage, yet some fixtures are obviously missing. I can't imagine anyone climbing up to the first or even second floor of a burned-out shell to steal an old toilet bowl and porcelain fixtures don't melt so I'm fairly certain the toilets were removed before the fire. That makes the story of the owner's wife sleeping in the chateau even stranger. If it wasn't arson you'd have to check archives for the results of the fire investigations, everything else is guesswork at best 36 years later. The few bits of electrical wiring I've seen in the videos look old but not ancient. On the ground floor there's bits of cardboard and metal conduit (Bergmann conduit), which was used until about 1960, but the wires inside are already PVC-insulated so definitely not original to the build and no more than 30 years old in the late 80s. In the basement there's PVC conduit, so it seems that has been even more extensively rewired at some point in the 60s or later. Of course new wiring can be dodgy too but from what little I can see the electrics don't strike me as an obvious cause (I've seen far worse things that never started a fire).
What you really need Dan, is more subscribers to micro manage every minor detail of your work and work habits. Personally, I don't wear gloves, I don't often wear ear protection because I like to hear whats going on around me. I happen to like steel toed boots, but I know most people don't. All that being said, I'm not at all concerned about what you wear, how you go about completing your project, or even whether you get injured while you do it. I prefer no one gets injured, but construction sites produce injuries no matter how safe you are. I'm much more interested in the history of the chateau and the grounds than I am in the actual construction. What I'm saying is, you do you, and I'll be here watching. Even if you dont wear protective equipment or go about doing a job the exact same way I would.
Progress and glad your wearing a respirator. Mold, animal droppings. Best to be safe. Agree to upgrade your wheelbarrow planking. Looks twice as hard with those heavy loads. We know your strong! 😜 anxious to see what other secrets the chateau is hiding. Take care and have a great week!
Getting that old photo of your Chateau is fantastic Dan, I’m sure it was beautiful inside as well in it’s heyday. Also, how great it is that all your basement has fabulous flooring throughout Dan! What a saving in both time and money not having to tile or concrete to make a useable area. Exciting times ahead once the power is installed too. 🏰👍🥰
With your first lot of patreon money buy a few car ramps to easily get the wheel barrow up and down stairs, glad to see you are wearing your mask but still no hard hat
With the Chateau having been deeply terraced as it was, I wonder if there is actually another sub-basement to what you think is the basement? And I wonder where all the fill came from to cover what were the stone walls? You probably have a lot going on in the dirt surrounding your home! And it is so fascinating that there were at least 2 previous structures on your property, including a possible mill as it was so heavily forested. That swimming pool really has me puzzled as it was clearly something other than a pool at some early point. I would be very tempted to dig/scrape very carefully in flat 12" layers away from the walls with your digger on one side of the structure to see how far down things go and whether there is another level to your house. Of course you wouldn't want to risk taking g support away from the wall. Fascinating. Also, I don't see an email address in the description or on your main RU-vid description, community, about site.💗
I honestly think you would be better off with a couple of 5 gallon buckets for removing that rubble in the basement. Those sure would be easier to manage than that wheelbarrow.
Dan, each day is getting better and better. Great to see each room get cleared. I don't know what you and Amaury were laughing about, but laughter is a great stress reliever. Cheers
I am sorry, but I laughed when that board snapped. Then I felt bad because you are working so hard. Thanks for all the effort that you put into the videos.
It is very cool to imagine the lives that touched this chateau, both rich and poor and the events that happened here over the years. Excited to learn the history.
I can’t wait for you to start on the rebuild of the château. All of that cement and rendering your digging out I’d be tipping it all along your driveway. It makes excellent rubble for driveways and after you’ve ran over it a few times packs it down pretty well
God what bossy comments! i luv your show...the way your face lights up when speaking of the Chateau. Oh, and you look really handsome with your hair that length...🥰
Dan, a great vlog once again. Your filming and production is amazing. I can imagine this chTeuais going to spring surprises and secrets for many months to come. What a very exciting time for you.
King Loui the 13th ordered the original Chateau's in that area to be destroyed. I did a whole paper on it and lost it when the power went out grrrr. There is a group that has a archive and current works to identify the original land owners who fled as refugees escaping the Catholic revolution and executions. They have historic letters from refugees some going back to the 16 and 1700's. Census in the area wasn't done until about 1730's. I believe you will be the 4th to rebuild on this site. There may have been 2 periods in time where the property sat abandoned for 100 years. The first 100 year period after the 1st family fled - Chateau was destroyed. A grandson returned, rebuilt, fire happened and he abandoned. Then second 100 year period prior to the purchase by the Russian who again rebuilt then sold to the Channel Associate and his wife - once again taken by fire. Get a lightening Rod Dan ;)
A lot of the records are held in "New France" which is Quebec, Canada. In the Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian Church Archives. Before Governments were formed after the Revolution the land was run by many Noble Families with their own armies and they all were in the control of the Holy Sea reporting to the Head of Church. Many records were lost, purposely by those who formed the Government to overtake and prevent the Nobles from ever forming armies again to overthrow "the people" and Kings no longer ruled but became figureheads. To find anything prior search religious archives including Alexander the Greats accounts of settlements - the "doomsday book".
So glad that your Patreon page is live now. Have been waiting to sign up. Watching you haul the wheelbarrow up the stairs, makes me think that there has got to be an easier way to do this.
Dan don't give yourself a hernia from all that straining you are doing to your body. I got a hernia months ago from shoveling gravel in my yard. I was laid up for weeks after surgery.💙
I it so nice to see the cleanup and out being done Dan, it makes things look so much better and helps you and others to walk around freer and safer as well. Well done!!
That gate! Seeing it low, toward the ground, those flowers, so pretty. I know other things need to be addressed first but I hope you'll get to the rehab'g of the gate soon.
Congrats on your patreon. Lots of concerned followers here Dan. I know you are tough and get it done but be safe. One more peice of protection is top boot guards. It is a flap that you attach to your boots that will protect the top of your foot. Cheers.
Gee clearing a lot now! And power... You will be loving there soon Dan! I have been busy of late and have enjoyed an early morning with tea and toast watching I don't know how many instalments this morning lol. Love it.
Just to let you know I love the music you have chosen. It makes the hard work you are doing seem up lifting and happy. Which is what this chateau deserves. Cant wait to see your hard work finished. Also I love the history that you are discovering on your journey.
I really love how you just get on with the work and not use half the stream talking .Best stream yet .Liked and shared .Your a hardworking great guy xx
I wish I could signup for Patreon. Your chateau is the first one that I really wanted to follow your journey completely. Looking at documents you have found, the stories linked to it from children who stayed there, etc. Sadly I cannot afford to, I am hoping that they will be added to your website once it is up and running. This an amazing project you have taken on. Dan
What a lovely lad. He works so hard, no one to help or admire his work at the end of a day... except his friends on youtube...and we do admire even if we can't help.! It was a very pretty house. Someone, wrote in French where you could go to find information on the original site. That would be worth following up. The local Mairie might be able to help, or tell you where you might find more information. Someone there will speak English.
