So glad I found this! My son is 5 and I believe gifted. He is in love with cells and molecules. I'm homeschooling him and this video really helps. A lot of times I get weird looks when I say he's 5 and we're doing schoolwork. I mostly teach him through games and play. The science, however, he leads the way. I read things to him but he just understands it. Whenever he grasps reading, I'm curious how his interests will change.
I just stumbled upon your channel while researching gifted homeschool. We are so so so incredibly similar in our homeschool approach and preferences! I have a gifted little boy starting kindergarten at 3. We are a military family as well, and LOVE Disney.
Yes, tell us more about your morning basket! It is so hard to find secular morning basket ideas. :-) I'm enjoying hearing about what you do with your son, and I would love to hear more about what you do with your daughter too. (My kids are a little bit younger.)
Thank you for sharing your resources. I've never heard of some of these, such as Dimensions. In fact, many of your choices are a first time for me. I've heard of Core Knowledge, but didn't know they offered free resources.
I am so confused but will be watching your video until I get this down . My twin second graders and kindergartener are now hone and I switched from online School to homeschooling and doing it as much as I can during the week and weekends well I will be just started doing this and also working full-time so I’m trying to figure out what the best set up is without wasting a lot of time and money and still keep them learning thank you for taking the time to do all of this!!!
We are doing Blossom and Root year 1 earth science right now and really enjoying it. It’s been a lot of fun and we’ve added in a lot of picture books and the kids have loved it.

We really enjoyed BFSU and Blossom and Root science. We did several of the book seeds (the profiles in science series) and animal science. We have moved on the Scientific Connections through Inquiry, which is based on the second volume of BFSU.
That is great to hear! Did you like blossom and root science? are you still using it? and would you recommend starting with animals? We are really loving BFSU so far.
We liked it! It’s very book/craft heavy, which suits me (I was a marine biologist prior to kids) just fine but my son really craves more experiments. I like the balance that SCI has between simple experiments and deep scientific understanding.

Is your state strict on any of the curriculum choices? We are in PA and I am just starting to homeschool so we are navigating all of this and I still don't understand how to choose curriculum and be legal.
They are very similar so I feel either way you go is a great choice. They both still teach in the same way of concrete to pictorial to abstract. However I picked dimensions just because it is a little more stream lined. The look of it is more engaging and still simple. As well as all the lessons are taught and shown in the same way. It goes in the order; think, learn, do, activities, workbook. I also really liked the diversity with the characters and names.

I love chatty, helps with the laundry! We're more than halfway through dimensions KB and I only just today learned the curriculum expects the child to have mastered numbers bonds up to 10. ... I didn't buy the teachers book or workbook (wasn't available) and so I've just been going with the main text using cubes for manipulatives... I only just found out about the black line masters too haha How did you teach the mental math at that point? I was expecting to just get my daughter to understand the concepts in this level (which she does if I do it with her, well enough imo for an almost 4yo). Wasn't expecting to focus on mental math and mastery until the 1a book. I look forward to your byl0 impressions. I was expecting to start in October, but I don't think we'll get around to it until spring 2012 at this point.
Honestly I am not sure my son had it memorized at that point which probably is what contributed to us hitting a wall at the end of 1A but the teachers guide has lots of ideas for games. Like go fish where you use the black line masters ten frame cards and have to make a selected number in order to get a match. There is an under the cup game where you know that you started with X number and you hide a certain amount under the cup so they have to figure out what that must be. You can play a toss up game with two sided counters or coins and then they say 5 heads and 2 tails makes 7 coins. You can play memory with upside down ten frame cards where a match is X. You can also do bracelets or paper chains where you match number bonds like 3 red and 5 blue beads equals 8 beads. You can also just do number bond flash cards or domino chains. Hopefully that gives you some sort of idea of things you can do, that the teachers manual suggests. We didn't do all of those things but we did some and we just did some board games where he would have to add up dice and stuff too. I think one thing that helped us which might not be the best advice, was we mostly focused on the number bonds of 10. That is how he solves a lot of mental math now, is just by first figuring out what would make an even 10 and then add or subtract from there. sorry for writing a whole novel. hopefully at least some of it made sense.

What do I with these?" I also looked for a bunch of free printable activities and there's one cute one with monster eyes I'm sure she'll love. I'll try a few games and see how she does with them. We play a few board and card games, but could definitely do more. I'd love to see a video of how your family plays games as well! This may seem like a weird question, but what was the first thing your son did that made you think he was gifted? My son is older now (14), but since he was my first born, I had no idea the things he was doing were way above what the average children his age were doing. I see the signs now that he has gone back to public school instead of homeschool. I’m still amazed at some of the concepts he just instantly understands, but it also means that he can be easily frustrated when it takes him longer to master new concepts.
Yeah I definitely identify with this. It is hard because in general to people I know in real life I don't say he is gifted. The only reason I do on here is because I feel like then similar people will find me and we can bounce ideas off each other but I think any label can be hard on kids so I try not to push him in that box in real life. He hasn't been formally tested so he might not actually be gifted. That being said I assume he is. He was late to talk but as soon as he could talk, he knew all his letters. At 2 he would do puzzles upside down to challenge himself before he turned three he could do a 100 piece puzzle. He would cry at movies very young and he has very active brain. He told me the other day that he is always dreaming even when he is awake. He also could sit and read for hours. So all this probable seems pretty anecdotal but I think all those things together really made him seem gifted. No two gifted kids are the same but in general it is not just intelligence. Sorry for the novel 🙃 hopefully it made sense. I would assume your son is gifted, he sounds awesome!
Love Learning Everyday Yes. Same thing. He could do 24 piece puzzles at 2, 100 piece puzzles at 3 or closer to 4. We used to be apart of the YMCA so he went to their daycare area when I would workout. All he did was puzzles. There was even an instance at home where he had a 100 piece puzzle he wanted to put together, he was very insistent that he was missing a piece while I was telling him no, I think all the pieces are here. He walks into his room looking for that piece and finds it.
Each day has a lesson from each. They work on very different skills in these younger levels. Skills is your phonics/spelling/writing/grammar/written reading comprehension. Listening&Learning is your content knowledge/vocabulary/oral comprehension. Honestly, the Listening&Learning units could replace general science and humanities for a relaxed homeschooler in these early years.
We do both every day.(or at least try to) I do think the skills units can be condensed quite a bit just because so much is extra time for testing and things like that since it is a public school curriculum so you might not need to do the skills everyday or at least a whole lesson everyday. The biggest thing I have learned from using this program is don't exhaust your self and push your kids too much by trying to get them to answer every single question and activity presented. Hopefully that makes sense.

We're just taking this curriculum as it fits into his schedule, since he also joins in with his brother's grammar and writing program. So it's been really nice not feeling rushed. Btw we're loving Beast Academy online (so much fun!) and Singapore Math too!

I have not... I would not be opposed to trying it. I do know that they many people consider them more neutral then secular. So I would worry that the literature picks wouldn't align with my beliefs and might lean too traditional. I haven't used it, it could be great but I believe it was created so that religious homeschoolers could still use charter school/state funds to buy their curriculum. (since it is required that state funds be used on nonreligious materials) so it isn't really created for me or other truly secular homeschoolers. That being said it could still be a good choice for some secular families. I am sorry my answer is so wishy washy but I wanted to give you hopefully a coherent idea of where my brain is at with book shark.
