Filmmaker and author Sasha Sagan joins us to discuss secular rituals and celebrations on this episode of FFRF's Ask An Atheist. Learn more about the Freedom From Religion Foundation at ffrf.org.
I am from India. Very religiously involved in Pentecostal churches. Born and brought up in a Christian family. Lately I found many of their bogus beliefs, doctrines and behaviours. I want to know about the psychology behind speaking in tongues. Please if possible suggest a good book on that. Years of myths on my life is having withdrawal symptoms And I feel cheated by the so called religious people
About grandma's death with a child, I would emphasize, “The memories we have of her can comfort us,” would be a good way to soften the blow a bit, after you tell them the straightforward facts, age appropriate, of course. “Grandma’s memories and her example (good or bad, I suppose) she set of how she was in her active life will be thought of in the future, my child, and will be useful at times to comfort and guide you as you grow and go through life. She will always be there unconsciously, including Grandma's share of DNA in your cells, along with memories of her in your brain.” I find that uplifting medicine, ceasing earlier (less detail) the younger they are. Limit it to answering their question. You aren’t intending to open a whole new can of worms, here. But something along these lines may set the table for a lifelong permitted dialog about end of life in humans.
Wonderful conversation amongst the three of you. Sasha Sagan is such a delightful guest!...btw, I think “lasterday” should catch on! Brilliant young mind at work there! 😁
I have said for years and will continue to say it: Rick Santorum must have been the inspiration for the character Brick Tamland in the movie Anchorman.
She's so great. Such a happy and rational person. Definitely echoes of her father, but her own person at the same time. On the question of space travel and discovery, I feel that we are ALSO citizens of our solar system, galaxy, and the wider universe. Discoveries outside our planet might help our planet. But, sure the focus should be here. As Carl said, "...the only home we'll ever know."
General question: Can y'all do a show on the real nature of the puritan religion and how the pilgrims where really not the founders of America? I don't think that the christian of today that use the pilgrims to argue that the US was founded by religion understand what they are saying.
The funny thing about the puritans is that they were basically the Westboro Baptists of their time. They were so utterly obnoxious with their beliefs that they managed to get kicked out of two countries.
It is good to know that the principles of the nation are in your DNA. That means that you have Apache genes, Chinese genes, African genes, and some great European genes, like Irish, Polish, German, Viking genes, just to mention a few. You can only be the most principled people in the world! What? Only the better European genes count?
Yes there are unelected (think 26) Church of England archbishops and bishops sit in the House of Lords. UK's Senate would be the most apt comparison When they retire as bishops their membership of the House ceases and is passed on to the next most senior bishop. The Archbishop of Canterbury is usually appointed a life peer on retirement Ironically whilst religion is thus more constitutionally woven into UK fabric, we are much more secular than the US. Churchgoing is something largely for the over-70s here
surely we atheists can come up with a better theme song for this program 🎶🙉👎 suggestions: *god's away on business ~ tom waits* *jesus don't want me for a sunbeam ~ the vaselines* *dear god ~ XTC*
All I hear is blabbing, name calling, and straw manning of Rick Santorum's point. No one can argue against what he said because it's true. You can only beat around the bush and attack a straw manned version of his argument.
