To be honest, the stigma is what bothers me the most. I previously was an active duty Infantry Marine for 9 years. Now I'm Military Police in the Army National Guard and work Security as my day job while also being a full time student. I'm doing what I have to do to pay the bills, and have prevented hundreds of weapons and contraband from getting into my site. But I still get allot of smart a$$ remarks from customers, patients and sometimes even my spouse, That I'm "just security". It's frustrating to know I have so much experience, knowledge and have done so much, to still be seen as just some nobody by the public and my family.

The emotional aspect kills most officers faster than anything. 20 years Armed Patrol here. I've had more guys quit within their first 2 months from PTSD than anything else. From finding dead bodies, watching people die, almost dying themselves....Doing everything they could to save someone and it fail...... That is usually the reasoning behind officers quitting. You have to have a very thick skin and know how to process everything youre involved in post-shift or it will drive you insane. I quit after 17 years because emotionally..... I wanted no part of it anymore. But......18 months later I came back ...still trying to figure out why lol

We all have a choice in this industry, to be an asset or a liability, being a part of the solution or the problem. I may be getting my first security job soon and all I can say is I dont wanna hack it. I want to be properly trained, and learn properly from proper experience. Im serious about turning this into a career with the goal of eventually becoming armed security. I want to be prepared for the job properly. And thankfully I dont struggle with arrogance or that "wannabe cop" mindset. To add to number 5. I usually say that I work in public safety or security Officer or housing patrol. It also helps that when I’m in uniform I look like a police officer and I get asked about it all the time. Lol
@bentonhousand4187
@bentonhousand4187 2 года назад
@@TheAngrySecurityGuardChannel I See what your saying but I try to avoid saying anything that doesn’t sound official. Like “security guard” or “rental cop” also public safety incorporates anything that serves and protects that isn’t specifically law enforcement. Like fire, ems, private security ect. Typically “public safety officers” are not sworn.
@bentonhousand4187
@bentonhousand4187 2 года назад
@@TheAngrySecurityGuardChannel I understand that but I’m very careful with how I say it. I don’t say public safety official. I say I work in public safety. I can definitely see how it can be misinterpreted. Though recently I’ve been saying that I work in private security and if I’m asked specifically what type of security I explain it. I’ve had people pay for my meals even if they know I’m security. Technically I’m not supposed to take gratuities but sometimes I don’t have a chance to tell someone that or I don’t want to be rude. I’m more proud to be a security officer now then I ever have been in my career. I’ve learned so much in the last 2 years then I have in the 5+ years I’ve been working security. I’ve learned about laws, regulations, how to articulate reports, self confidence and I’ve experienced things most security officers probably don’t ever get to see.

@rustinfox6762
@rustinfox6762 2 года назад
I think another thing to add to this list is an inconsistency of action.. what I mean by that is things tend to go from 0 to 100 really quickly. Most of the time it's really boring you'll be walking your post most days trying not to get bored out of your mind and then all of a sudden out of nowhere you will have to draw your gun on a tweaker with a stick with nails in it and you have to be able to do both those modes if that makes sense.

A couple of things you might want to add are uniforms and training. The last company I worked for only gave me one uniform to work five days a week. So I went and invested in some uniforms of my own. As for training the company I worked for only wanted to give you the minimum amount training and no encouragement to get more training.

Adding on to number 3: Post orders I think that what some of the client customers fail to understand is that there are only so little that we can do as far as work duties are concerned but at least after a while once we perform them, then they finally understand but that’s not my thing. The one thing that I don’t like doing or seeing or even hearing about is sleeping on the job because what that would mean is they are setting themselves as a liability and that’s not good. Another thing that I have had is that I’ve have been falsely accused of being a police officer or a parking enforcement officer which that is not the case at all but it’s happened to us all at one time or another right? Lol
@bentonhousand4187
@bentonhousand4187 2 года назад
Another thing about post orders is that the client often opts for liability over an officer’s personal safety. Like not allowing weapons or being hands off. I know that often falls on the company but the client can dictate that as well. The way I see it if they hired security the security should be allowed to actually do something to protect the property and themselves.
@ricgillis1280
@ricgillis1280 Год назад
Great Video! I would add, often the lack of support that officers receive from their bosses! For example, if you're doing a great job, and the client doesn't want you onsite, the company will pull you off of the site, without telling you why, or anything! We're TOO disposable!

I had to remove a simple trespass, a homeless man from 7 eleven. He refused to leave I told him you have ten minutes to leave or I'm calling the cops to remove you. Once he started getting verbally aggressive I decided to leave and de-escalate the situation. I called my co-worker who has all his permits and gear to handle it. When he asked the man he got to go the homeless man exploded and pulled a screwdriver out and started coming at the guard. The guard was able to deploy his pepper spray and blind him. Cops showed up about 40 seconds after it happened. After that night I am going invest in a handgun, stun gun, mace, and baton it is just crazy out here. He or I could have died over a guy sitting in the alley doing nothing. We get put in a bad situation and having no gear is not good.

I hate to hear it, but it’s all truth. That’s how private security really is. The $100,000+ security assignments, you keep speaking of, would you kindly clarify in another video? I’ll probably have to do a video on that but I’d like to hear from you. The only $100,000 security jobs I can think of are senior management positions, EP positions, or tactical response during a crisis or disaster. To get to $100,000, in my honest opinion - in security- mostly requires the officer to work extensive overtime with double shifts. Be safe out there my man.

Training is number one! Immerse yourself in as much information as possible to increase your value to both your company, and the profession itself. Second, find the gap. If that’s management or leadership, there’s an area within the company you work for where you can help. Find it, and be the change agent that makes a difference for the better. Lastly, teach. Regardless of your time in security, you have a lifetime of experience and knowledge that is still applicable. Find a way to mentor others and be a leader. Also, download and join the security guard network app. It’s available on Android and iOS! It’s full of great information to help you become a better guard.
