I'm guessing your idea for the Cybertruck is to use a NEMA 14-50 to 4 NEMA 5-20 outlets adapter to run your power tools from and then it will be far more successful than using the 120 volt outlets in the bed of the Cybertruck because the 120 volt outlets peak at 20 amps whereas the NEMA 14-50 peaks at 50 amps.

Ford allowing 30A on a 20A circuit is actually dangerous. Seems like it should have blown the circuit I wonder if it would have if they kept the load going for longer if it would have pop'd.

Great job doing these comparisons. I'm happy to see that the Cybertruck can handle a large electric welder with ease. In Rivian's defense, they were first to market and did not have the luxury of seeing their competition ahead of time to out-do then.

According to a video I saw about a Cybertruck tear down, there is a set of wires under the frunk to be able to install an outlet later on. They speculated that it wasn't installed either because oarts were scarce or just to get them out the door faster. The first makes more sense to me.

I think that's normal when outlets are combined. Usually it will say so. The rated output is across all the outlets. I have what they call "solar generators" which is basically a big battery with AC sine wave 120 outlets. My specs say 2200watts which is across all 3 outlets. It can surge to 4400watts if an appliance needs more to start up. I don't use it for power tools, but for cooking when camping. I don't do testing but I watch videos that test these things and they'll use let's say an induction stove, air fryer, coffee maker, water kettle, and a heat gun with different settings and by combination of these they try to trip the breaker to see what it can handle. For recharging it uses an MPPT controller and the output is basically the AC converter. What you're testing is basically the inverter and whatever it's rated for.

Another test you can try is a break out cable that gives you a pair of 120v from the 240v outlet and see how each of the two legs does. I know from experience that the lightning pair of bed 120v are each a leg on the 240v, but I haven't yet tested my CyberTruck to see if that's the case, I expect it will be. It's odd that you popped the CyberTruck 120v outlet, if it's just a leg of the 240, and that the second 120v didn't give you more juice, so now I have some doubts...

You can get a 240 to 110 V adapter that turns a 240 V outlet into a 110 V outlet. Our elecrician plugged one in for us when we went from an electric oven to a gas oven a couple of decades ago. I have a thought about the inside circuit and it could be lower amperage until you break the circuit as the grinder wasn't full power. so maybe the inside is 15 amps only. probably needs more tests to make sure. however this would help explain what happened with the grinder.

Yes, would be good to see if the power remains a good sine wave. Some inverters when nearing overload produce closer to a square wave. This then has higher frequencies in it which then can blow up devices which use a capacitive dropper in their power converter (e.g. many LED lights).

Not just the Rivian.... every F150 class pickup truck the OEMs make are starting to look like a toy truck compared to the CT's capabilities. Let's face it, the CT is only rated at the capacities that it is because of federal classification groupings. If your truck can carry more than a certain amount it has to have thicker axles, etc etc. Elon is on record as saying that the CT's cargo capacity is actually higher than what it is rated for. They only rated it at what it lists because they didn't want to add weight by having to go up an axle size.

The 110 volt outlets on the Cybertruck were 20 amp, designed to accept a 20 amp plug which has one prong turned sideways. But the Ford 110 volt outlets were 15 amp design, even though they could provide 20 amp power.

A receptacle rated 20 A is required to have trip protection accordingly. You're right to say it is not safe to drive more than 20 A in this circuito as it is a hazard for the extensions connected to it. Ford seems not compliant with the NEC. Although cybertruck has the protection required by NEC, I believe resetting a tripped protection needs to be manual. If true, Cybertruck wouldn't be compliant with NEac either.

Looks like the Rivian is just an 'adventure' vehicle for weekend warriors. Not bad, just a different mission vs 'work' for heavier duty stuff. It looks like Ford has the right idea, just minorly wimped out on a part of the implementation, would be nice if they upgraded to 'cybertruck mode' Also the cybertruck should rethink their 120 outlet strategy, I am pulling for them but for 'useful access' to the AC power Ford is a bit ahead, IMHO. I'll keep my order in for the Cybertruck though! The quick 'first drive' that another chanel did for the Silverado EV WT looked nice, wish you had one of those too.

So if the Ford's 120V outlets are the separate legs of the 240V, that suggests that you're not going to be successful running 240V and 120V tools at the same time. From what I saw of the Ford's display, it looks pretty clear that it's wired like that, as the 240V shows as power on both of the 120V lines.

A lowly gas generator or a dedicated heavy duty maintenance free LiFePo noiseless portable generator could generate all the power, without a dent on range! Does not need a 100K EV for that. In the end, a power generator, is nothing but an essential power tool accessory, and likely go through a lot of abuse by itself, paying for itself, if a replacement is needed. Almost any one of the EV trucks could carry one in their bed🤔. Range extender battery packs for EV trucks is an overkill in terms of cost and constant dead weight to lug around. An on demand generator rental is easy on the wallet. Keeping generator separate allows for more flexibility in mobility as well(not all powertools are extension cord friendly), not to mention easier maintenance(only when using an ICE unit). Batteries not good for electric pickup trucks, esp. One used to carry variety of heavy loads for jobsite work. BEVs lose a lot of range, not just pulling things, but also, when exposed to hot sun or biting cold, just to maintain the cabin comfort(climate control could be a plus for some loads🤔), maintain optimal battery thermals, cooldown high power drive electronics. Don't want additional anxiety to the prevailing range anxiety🤯. CT sales should 🚀 already, if "real" weekend warriors fit the target market 😂
