This is the third installment in garden writer Susan Mulvihill's indoor seed-starting series. In it, she provides updates on how her seedlings are doing and review when to water and fertilize them; when to start your seeds based on your last frost date; explain the differences between cool and warm-season vegetable crops; when to plant your tomato and pepper seeds; and she'll share a great seed-starting resource on her website, SusansintheGarden.com.
Susan gardens in Spokane, Wash. While most of this region is in hardiness zone 6, her garden is in a microclimate, making it zone 5b. She is an #epicgardeningambassador for @epicgardening.
You can order signed copies of Susan's newest book, The Vegetable Garden Problem Solver Handbook, by sending her an email at Susan@SusansintheGarden.com. Her other book is The Vegetable Garden Pest Handbook, which is all about insects and how to deal with the damaging ones organically.

That Spokane Zone with the % amd dates chart looks so useful! I am jealous but happy you have it.. 😄 I can't find that for Germany /Mannheim /the Region around yet. But I know the frost dates, they are easy to find, so it is not critical. Catching up on your videos now, have been on holiday for a while, wanted to "check - in' and say hello to you! 😄🤗 Greetings, Judit Ps: Bill's onions look amazing, I am doing the same method, as he does! 🤗

Thanks for all the great info, as always! I used your epic gardening discount code last night. I did my main purchase when they ran their holiday sale and stocked up on a bunch of their awesome trays. At the time, I was too cheap to buy the 5" pots, but I realized my tomatoes and peppers will thank me for being prepared later this spring. While there, I also found more seeds I just couldn't live without 😊

I laughed when you said, No! To starting tomatoes and peppers in cold zones now. Everyone gets excited to start when they see all these RU-vid channels from all over growing already. I’m starting about a week later than normal to avoid up potting and over grown plants by transplanting time. Usually started last week of March, but going into April. Warm season crops will do nothing in cold soils. Only if I had a low tunnel or high tunnel would I start sooner. There are also varieties that are for colder weather and probably could be started sooner. Onions I tried in flats-no good as the soil surface molded, a few to a cell they get thicker necks if you want State Fair sized onions. I found planting in pots that are 3-4” deep to be good enmass. I had to give them 5 haircuts last year😅. The onion seed doesn’t keep long so might as well pot them up. They did well in winter sow also. Had a lot of onions of normal 2-4” size bulbs no matter how they were started. We just had our First ever February tornado, waiting to hear what damage it caused. Wasn’t too far away from us and no injuries so far, so that’s good, but damage to roofs, trees and power lines were mentioned. WI, Z5a.

@@SusansInTheGarden just viewing news coverage right now. It will take another day to get total info about strength and how many tornadoes. They are showing a lot of heavy damage to farms. It sucked the water of someone’s pool 😬. We were lucky as it skirted just south east of us.

I live in Canada. I don’t find it useful to count back from the last frost date since it is not the time these warm weather lovers go into the garden. I plant my tomatoes about 8 weeks before the average date I plant them in the garden, that is when the evening low temperatures are 10 degrees Celsius or above in the forecast for the 2 following weeks.

Me too, Z3, and I agree. Also, tomatoes hate “cold feet” so it’s also about soil temps, it can take a long time for the chill to come out of the ground.

I am growing vegetables for the first time this year (zone 5b) and really appreciate your guidance. Thanks so much.

@@SusansInTheGarden thank you for all the wonderful tips and tricks you tell thru your videos, really appreciate them all. I am not a newbie gardener per se but i like to try something new every year so in a way I am a newbie for that plant/ vegetable for that year. LOL I would like to know the fish fertilizer : water proportions for the first time fertilizing the seedlings and does it change with the type of seedlings? Also how often do you fertilize the new tiny seedlings and for how long. Thank you in advance. I am in zone 6b now 7a
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 5 месяцев назад
@@psbchannel2012 I use half as much of the liquid fertilizer as the label recommends (but I use the recommended amount of water) for young seedlings. I feed them about every 10 days to 2 weeks. Same formulation for all seedlings. When they're ready to transplant into the garden, you can use full-strength fertilizer (as recommended on the label). I'll go into more detail in my next video. And thanks so much for your nice comments. They are much appreciated!

Hi, Glenda. Bill doesn't do anything special except to use new seeds each year. That's because onion seeds typically only have high germination rates in the first year. Thanks so much for your nice comments.

You’re making sure the tomatoes are watered but are they on a heat mat & do they still have lights? Thank You
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 5 месяцев назад
Hi, Bonnie. I'm not growing tomatoes yet but tomatoes and peppers do benefit from a heat mat, just until the seeds have germinated. I find it's easiest to turn on the grow lights on as soon as I plant the seeds because some seeds germinate really quickly and that way, they've got light right away.

What temperature or should you plant out cabbage?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 5 месяцев назад
Hi, Nicholas. If you have started cabbage seedlings indoors first, the outdoor soil temperature should be about 60 degrees F. before you transplant them out into the garden.

Question to you, how long should a person wait to replant seeds if they don't come up? I planted Walla Walla onions by seed on the 2/27 and still haven't come up yet. I feel that they should've come up by now. Others have popped out. I`he watered daily. Thank you, Nancy from nebraska
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 4 месяца назад
Hi, Nancy. I'm assuming that you planted them indoors? Under those conditions, they should come up within 2 weeks. If they're planted outdoors, I'm really not sure, esp. depending upon your outdoor temperatures. But another factor is how old the seeds are. Unfortunately, onion seeds have the low viability of all veggie seeds (1 year... meaning you'll get your best germination rate if those seeds are planted within their first year). Let me know if this helps. Take care.
@nancyrasmussen2016
@nancyrasmussen2016 4 месяца назад
I planted indoors. I just bought the seeds online thru ferry-morse this year put says sell by 12/24. I`ve planted onion seeds before and they were so fast to come up so was surprised by these not coming up. I did plant more, there on heat mat, with saran wrap on top with grow light on as well. If this second batch doesn't come up I'm wondering if they gave me bad seeds. We'll see. Thanks for input. Nancy from Nebraska

@@nancyrasmussen2016 Thank you for clarifying a few things. The heat mat is unnecessary for starting onions. Maybe they don't like all of that heat? Just a thought. I think I would turn off the heat mat and give them a few more days.
