I have been feeling overwhelmed to learn and start my own garden for a few seasons now and I was again overwhelmed starting this new season (with all the information available out there). I am so happy I found you! You cover so much and are clear, simple and consistent in your information, which is so easy for me to understand and put in action. It's also so clear and a joy, to see you love what you share.. I am following along with you this season in zone 8b in Germany and I am so inspired and motivated for the 2024 season now!! Can't wait! Thank you so very much!💚🙏🌱

Hello! It's very nice to meet you. Thank you for such lovely comments. I do enjoy sharing what I've learned over the years so that others will be successful at growing a garden. Don't worry because everyone is a beginner when they start out, and we all learn along the way. I hope you have a wonderful garden season!

So glad to hear that you're recovering well! 🙌 I think that my sun hat gets bigger every year.😂 You are going to love those epic garden seed cells. I got some last year and then this year I ordered more for myself. They are amazing and plant seem to really grow well in them. I learned that they can also go through the dishwasher on a very gentle cycle which is fantastic. Just hose them off outside and then run them through the dishwasher to sterilize them for the next year. Thanks for always making such informative videos and a helpful useful website. Last year was my first year growing anything from seeds and it was scary and amazing all at the same time.

Hi, MaryAnn. Thank you for the good wishes. Yes, I've been hearing about using the dishwasher to sterilize the Epic seed trays, which is a great tip. Much easier! I'm so glad my videos have been helpful. Take care.

Hi, Richard. Thanks for the good wishes. It can be frustrating knowing the best time to plant. I'm working on part 3 of my indoor seed-starting video series right now and will address that topic a bit more. It'll be available on Thursday.

I have the epic cells and love them 🥰. Even more so because I can just rinse and put them in the top rack of my dishwasher lol. It is an awful feeling to have to throw out regular trays and pots. I try to handle them gently so I can reuse them but it only lasts 2 maybe 3 years and they are difficult to clean! I just ordered a few bootstrap farmer trays and single pots so hopefully they will last me the rest of my gardening career. Thank you for your videos!

Enjoy your gardening videos, Susan. I learn new things from you. I bought pelleted carrot seeds this year. I had read a couple of articles about pelleted seeds not lasting that long. One lady commented in a YT gardening channel that if you vacuum seal the opened seed packet, the lack of oxygen keeps the seeds viable for a longer time. I am going to do that with mine. I just bought some seed tape on Amazon and am going to make some seed tape. It will probably be a little tedious of an effort, but I am willing to do that so I don't have to thin out plants. I hate doing that because I feel like I am wasting food.

Definitely will have to try that bottle topper for watering. I really wanted to get the Epic Gardening trays originally but they were too expensive at the time and I couldn't get anyone to split them with me. I found Burpee silicone trays at Menard's, a big box store in the Midwest. I've had them for 3 years now, love them, and they are still going strong. What I especially like is that the bottom is flexible and the plants come out extremely easily by just pushing up.

I knew pelleted seed didn’t keep well, didn’t know lettuce kept that long. Yes to keeping the pelleted dry as any dampness will glob them all together. A few years ago I had had enough of repurchasing trays and found Greenhouse Megastore and then Bootstrap Farmer. They are a bit cheaper by large quantity at both and Epic offers smaller quantities. All your snow is gone! Ours here in WI is going fast, but still have a white layer out there. We are under the heat bubble right now and temps are normally 20s and we are heading for 50!😮. Nights rarely get to freezing. Looked at Accuweather and article discusses if we will have an early spring. They say our area will be 3+ degrees warmer this spring Again! You will be healed in no time. We had a news anchor and he had to sport his bandage for a bit. He has retired several years ago and looks to be doing well.😊

I started using the seed trays from Epic Gardening last year. They are fabulous. I bought enough this year to replace all the flimsy trays. I mostly use the six cell trays, but the four cell trays are great for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants.

I have had success this year starting 3 year old Walla Walla onion seeds with almost 100% germination in 3-5 days. I keep my seed packets in a plastic snap lid container in the fridge from one year to the next. It is a long day variety. Perhaps that is a factor.

Hi Susan, I live in Cda, ID. So glad that I found your channel. My husband and I planted our tomatoes and peppers 3 days ago. Watching your videos, I realize now that it may have been too early. Is there anything we can do to keep them healthy until the end of April?
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 5 месяцев назад
Uh oh! I hate to say this but it's way too early for both crops! I never start mine until about 5-6 weeks before the last frost date (usually in early to mid-April). Bill usually starts the pepper plants in mid-March. So the challenge is to give the seedlings plenty of light and nutrients (we usually use Alaska Fish Fertilizer every 2 weeks from when they have true leaves until it's time to move them out to the garden) and space (you'll want to up-pot the seedlings every now and then so they don't become pot-bound. Stressed plants won't do well in the garden and are more susceptible to different types of problems. I'm so sorry to have to tell you all of this! Here is a link to a chart on my website that gives information on when to start various types of vegetable seeds: www.susansinthegarden.com/guides/seed-starting-when-to-plant-vegetables/.

I ordered some of Epic’s cell trays this year but haven’t used them yet but they are well made. May take advantage of your code and get a few more. Great video. Also wanted to ask about the geraniums I saved from last year year, when should I plant them up? I know too early to start a lot of things but I’m sure getting the itch.
@SusansInTheGarden

Hi, Joyce. I always pot mine up in February, usually around the middle of the month.

On hardening off. I'm near Seattle so consecutive sunny days are rare. There's always cooler, rainy days. They need to get use to those too, so I've always continued hardening off in those conditions but is that right? If it's lettuce they don't care but other young plants aren't always happy.
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 5 месяцев назад
Yes, it sounds like you are doing the right thing, Barb! Here in Spokane, where it can be very sunny, hardening-off is an absolute must!

What should the ambient air temperature be while they are germinating and after when they are at the seedling stage under lights still? Great videos!
@SusansInTheGarden
@SusansInTheGarden 5 месяцев назад
Hi there. The average range for germination is 60-80 degrees F. Most sources recommend the air temperature should be about 10 degrees F. lower than the germination temp. I don't stress over it because ours have done fine over many years, just from our average indoor temperature during seed-starting season. I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos!
@jstallings2070
@jstallings2070 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! Hard to find information about the ambient temperature once they have germinated. Mine are in the basement which is around 58-65’. I am hoping that will work.
