The temptation to get sowing is growing. With January now here, the garden is dormant and sleeping but our fingers are itching to get sowing those seeds!
Whilst most things will have to wait till later, there are actually many vegetables and even flowers which can be sown this month to get a good head start on the growing season.
Here are some things I'm sowing in the month of January, which I think you should too! bare in mind though that most of the things in my list should be started off at home or in a heated greenhouse. I'm starting most of these off in my spare room at home under grow lights. It will be April at the very earliest when I start to move some of these down to the allotment greenhouses and polytunnels.

I couldn't agree more Brian. Every year brings new lessons. Especially with how methods and techniques are constantly changing.. it's impossible to know it all! All the best for 2024! 🧑‍🌾

asparagus, artichokes, eggplants (under the lights), and strawberries from seeds. You can plant tomatoes from each variety you want only one plant and in March take cuttings (side shoots) to propagate how many additional you want. Cuttings grow way quicker than from seed and you save on space and seeds :)

That's a good way to make things successional! I think it was Steve from Green Side Up who sadly passed away who did this and managed to get multiple crops off his tomatoes by taking and growing cuttings

@@downtoearthwithjimthx for the tip I will take a look at his channel if it's still there. I would like to improve my method cos my tomatoes start fruiting at the same time even if they are late to the party :)

Happy New Year I grow my onions from seed its a lot more work but gives me a better crop i live in N.Ireland and as you said our winter usually arrives in spring so onion sets run to seed for the same reason i sow leeks in march along with tomatoes as i have no way of heating polytunnel I've been growing veg since i was at primary school and I'm now 62 regarding knowledge you never learn everything the main thing to learn is how to adopt no year is the same as before so watching the weather forecast and looking out for early signs of pests and diseases that you might not have had trouble with before is vital to having a good years growing .

I agree so much better and worth the extra work in my opinion - even if it means individually pricking out hundreds of them into modules 😂 but less likely to bolt is the biggest benefit I think. Yes so true. I've only had 4 seasons on my allotment and every one of them has been different with some crops doing well one year and then failing the next. Always learning and always growing, have a happy new year and happy growing to you 🧑‍🌾

Happy New Year Jim and family 🥳. Here’s to an awesome 2024 growing season. And yes we have had an unusually warm December but Jan is set to be much colder 🥶. Got more onion seed to do but I’m trying very hard to be successional sower. Again have an amazing new year, Ali 🇨🇦

I'm still trying to get the hang of successional sowing! More practice this year I think. Happy new year to you and family and let's make it a good year in the garden too! 🧑‍🌾🥦🌽🧅🍅

I much prefer to grow my onions from seeds - I can save seeds year after year, which means I can be liberal with the amount I sow. And if I sow too many, onions have no problems being on standby in a small pot waiting to fill any gaps. That's aside from being less likely to bolt compared to onion sets, cheaper, better choice of varieties etc. My preferred sowing date for onions is mid February, because I don't want to use grow lights for them. I have tried to sow them earlier than that last year. Left them in an unheated greenhouse. They didn't do well and I ended up re-sowing in mid-Feb. The reason might be to do with the levels of light - the growth looked a bit odd on the ones that have germinated from the Jan-sown batch.

Do you save seeds even from F1 hybrids? I've been thinking of doing the same but a lot of the varieties of onion I grow from seed are hybrids. As for timing, I sow at Christmas and use grow lights, but to be honest I'd probably have the same results if I were to sow in the greenhouse in Feb or March, and they'd likely catch up to earlier sowings anyway. Growth tends to be very slow up until April for me

I’ve planted onion, chilli, naga, aubergine, coriander . Also I’ve planted few gourd seeds to check germination rate mainly

I am growing a couple of micro dwarf tomatoes under lights in my office... LOL plus an experimental delicata squash. But not yet starting anything for the garden season which in Canada still seems a long way off 😂 Happy New Year and congratulations also on growing your channel... just a short while ago i think you were working towards 1000 subscribers

I'm hoping to get some Tiny Tim dwarf tomatoes sown this week for the grow lights (shelves should arrive tomorrow!) Then I can get some other things sown and get those onion trays under lights. Delicata squash? Let me know how that goes, I've never started squash off this early but may try as I always fail badly with squash and never get much harvest. Thanks! It's certainly flown hasn't it! Happy new year to you! 🧑‍🌾

It's funny how some things started later end up catching up to those started even earlier isn't it. Sometimes it is best to wait with some things especially if the weather isn't great. My onions start off real slow and don't do much till at least April. I'm wondering if later sowings will give a crop at the same time as January sowings, I may experiment! Happy new year Steve 😊

Chilies depend on what you choose to grow. I often just keep them indoors altogether. Try just having four or five 2 to 5 liter pots of chilies lined up on a sunny windowsill to grow in the house. I don't even put them in the greenhouse because they can do well in pots. This way you don't even have to harden them off for going outside. And four pots with a decent variety does for a household, I freeze the extra ones to have all year.

Yes it's surprising how much a productive pepper plant can provide. I experienced that in 2021 with a bombardment of big juicy red peppers 🫑 sweet ones not chillies, I don't usually do chillies

@@downtoearthwithjim I've found chillies easier indoors. Honestly. tried the greenhouse, but for hot chillies I prefer indoors

the same happened to me the onions and leek bolted planted them on boxing day last year
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 6 месяцев назад
Seed grown onions or set grown? My boxing day onions didn't bolt but the leeks did - and they both underwent freezing temps before spring. I think leeks are a bit more sensitive to temperature swings than onions maybe?
