Very good, now I know a little more about my TinySA. Thank you. A further tutorial would be welcomed.

If you use this gadget a lot you will want to pick up a pair of SMA male-to-female couplers and attach them permanently to the unit to serve as connector savers. They will be a lot easier to replace when they are worn out than the connectors soldered to the board. Keep that lovely TR7 lit up man! - NU0C

Hi Rob, Awesome demo. I bought my SA Ultra from R&L 4/2023. It was $139.95 and still is the same price. Worth the expense. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U

Good video. Thanks for posting. The TinySA Ultra also has an input step attenuator (30 dB). I would find a plain English discussion of that feature helpful. 73

Hey Seven Forty, Laura here, I just wanted to let you know that a piece of flat black project board, opposite your camera, and placed at about a 45 degree angle just off camera, and below your lights will eliminate any unwanted glare from studio lights. You may have to play around with positioning, but I promise you it will work. The object is to create a "reflection" of the black card on the screen of whatever you are reviewing, instead of the distracting lights and surroundings, so the audience does not see the lights, and etc in the display. The next way is to remember that the angle of attack, is equal to the angle of incidence. So if you make sure your camera is away from the reflection of the light, but dim the lights in the rest of the room, you should not see any reflections in your displays when you video them for RU-vid. Good luck sweetie, and I hope that works for you. Laura.

Thanks for the tips! My shop lighting isn't really set up for video so the black card trick may work to help diffuse the overhead lighting to the camera. I tried playing with turning lights off but the screen on this device was really reflective and I was getting glare from every light source in the room. Changing the camera angle limited some of it but made the screen difficult to read so I made the best compromise I could and went ahead with the video.

A little advice, NEVER screw a connector together by spinning the female (in this case, spinning your radio like you did @ 15:00 into your video) onto the sma - N adapter. You should ALWAYS spin the "Nut" and keep both connectors still so it pulls the male straight into the female. Spinning the female will eventually damage your connectors. In this video you're running at frequencies that in my work, are considered low frequencies, I worked from 2 Ghz - 70 Ghz which, doing what you did at my frequencies would damage connectors & cables in no time. I had a picture years ago from Hewlett Packard showing damage from spinning female SMA & 3.5 mm connectors showing gouges on the male pin that looked like course threads from spinning the female connector on the male pin, causing amplitude & phase errors.

Hi, at 14':29" you have the reading of -3dB for 5W and -40dB attenuation. That is correct, but you already entered the gain of -40dB. Does the unit not automatically account for that and give the expected value of 37dBm directly on the screen?

After a spectral reading is done. Is there a button one can click that 'integrates' the entire sweep result - to give an RFI dosage amplitude?
@SevenFortyOne
@SevenFortyOne Месяц назад
I haven't seen that but maybe it's buried in a menu somewhere

Nice demo. Not long ago I also purchase this little awesome unit. I don't know what FW version you have, but in any case ver1.4 something from 31Dec24 can even go up to 12GHz! As you said, you don't really use it >HF but still, nice to know it can be used. To be useful one should play with a lower RBW and LNA on, to get the noise down, and nr of points and span not to wait an eternity for 1 sweep 😀
@ernestb.2377
@ernestb.2377 Месяц назад
Only what is missing on the unit is maybe a TG (tracking generator). One could do much more with it then, like sweeping the filters, amplifiers and such. I would say Erik @ErikKaashoek go for the tinySA Ultimate in the next edition 🙂 But in any case I am very impressed with this unit so far! Good work 👍

After calibrating spectrum analyzers for 30 years from many manufacturers it is clearly a slight difference in their user interfaces. The most logical and productive is that from HP-series. If a common menu task is "hidden", you do think of selling the instrument in favour of another unit with a more logically built up menu. If you find the wanted menu item, the technical features on this analyzers is superb though.

Excellent video ! It shows exactly how a tinySA Ultra is useful in the shack for most hams. I have both the tinySA & tinySA Ultra, and use the signal generator function the most. For the cost these devices can not be beat. I would love to see a tinySA Ultra with a 7 inch screen. How about it Erik ? 73 Dave WB1COB

Of course they can. Great for the shack or on the bench. I use a computer for service manuals anyhow. I'd still like a larger display so only one device would be needed.@@SevenFortyOne

Hi Rob! Thanks for the excellent demo! I restore old receivers and many require you to sweep the IF to correctly shape the response curve. For example, I want to sweep IFs at 262, 455, 535, 735 kHz +/- 10 kHz. Is this practical with the TinySA spectrum analyzer? Will the device provide/produce the IF frequency +/- 10 kHz while you scan the bandpass shape? Is the display good enough to show the symmetry (or lack thereof) of the IF bandpass profile? Thanks in advance for any comments you have on this! Regards, Fred VE1FA

why I bought mine: when the OTA tv industry moved to digital TV back in 2009, TV stations were allowed to keep their channel number that was assigned back when a channel number was assigned to a specific 6 mhz band of frequencies. now, it is just a label. I have a CCTV system. 24 cameras, 4 each, on 6 DVRs. I put the output of these DVRs onto unused analog channels and distribute these through the house via a CATV system from a demolished apartment. problem: you can't tell if a channe; is set on a frequency used by a new user after the OTA channel moved out. The TVs are not capable of demodulating the unfamiliar signaL I use my tiny sa to determine if the anlog channel space is open before I set the channel in my Rf modulator, and avoid the aggravation caused by interference a secondary use is: take it to a truck stop to show CB users the actual effect of tweaking up a CB to put more fire in the wire. show that person that, in reality, there is more power going out, but not in the CB band where it belongs. think about this: do the golden screwdriver guys tell CB users to use bigger fuse, since they are inherently using more DC power to send more RF power?

I wonder if the precision and stability of the tiny sa is up to par to calibrate a receiver... You should also take care of never inject DC and overdrive the input because that will destroy your analyser.
@SevenFortyOne
@SevenFortyOne 2 месяца назад
I'm planning to try it at some point but my suspicion is it should be "good enough", at least for older ham and general coverage receivers.

Does anyone have an explanation of the 4.4 GHz spike that is shown at 16:47? This is not the high band of the WI-FI router (which would be above 5 GHz). I have seen it in places where there are no 4.4 GHz spike beforehand, then just a 2.4 GHz WI-FI device is turned on. It's as if it is an artefact of the TinySA Ultra, itself. I would dearly like to understand what it is and how it can be removed, if an artifact. Thanks for making this video explainer.

SA's are calibrated with a 50 ohm load, short, and open. A SA subtracts artifacts and will show a smooth noise floor after calibration.

The meny composition on this TinySA ultra is not in line with what can be found on most analyzers out there. Not practical at all. Look on HP/Keysight 8590 or 8560 series etc. This composition is very productive. Hope Eric can alter it soon.

I see your point but I'm not sure this device is intended to mimic professional grade analyzers. Everything can be Improved and any improvements will be welcome, but I feel this TinySA is fine as it is considering what it is intended for, it's price point, and the fact that it's not supported by a huge corporation with unlimited resources.
